Each year the NHSCA selects an Athlete of the Year in 20 different sports and honors their  performance. The NHSCA first announced the Athlete of the Year in 2000 and has continued to do annually to showcase the total coaches across the country.

"The student athletes we honor are outstanding examples for successful high school athletes in their respective sports,” NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro Jr. said. "They place a high value on the teamwork skills their players learn for success in the classroom and on the field, and we are proud to be honoring them.”

Every Coach of the Year honorees will be honored in the National High School Sports Hall of Fame Museum, currently under construction in Easton, Pennsylvania.
