Royce Lewis of JSerra High School (CA) named as the National Baseball Athlete of the Year

The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) is pleased to announce Royce Lewis of JSerra High School in San Juan Capistrano, California as the 2017 NHSCA National High School Senior Baseball Athlete of the Year Award. 



Lewis, who is the No. 3 overall high school prospect in the upcoming Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, hit .377 this past season with four home runs and 25 stolen bases. Lewis is projected to be a first round draft pick.



Lewis is a member of USA Baseball’s Under18 team that won the gold medal at the Pan American Championships in Mexico last year. 



Lewis carries a 3.10 GPA, plus he volunteers at a children’s hospital in San Diego.  Lewis has accepted a scholarship from the University California, Irvine.



“Royce is an excellent example what this award stands for,” said Eric Hess, Executive Director of the NHSCA.  “Royce has excelled on the baseball diamond and in the classroom.  We congratulate him on an outstanding high school career and wish him good luck in college.”



Lewis is the second athlete from California to win the NHSCA Baseball Senior Athlete of the Year Award.



This the 18th year straight year the NHSCA will honor achievers in the high school athletic community nationwide with its Athlete of the Year Award in 20 boys’ and girls’ sports.  Other winners will be announced throughout the rest of the 2016-2017 school year.


Each one of the honorees will receive a beautiful trophy, plus they will be honored in the National High School Sports Hall of Fame Museum that the NHSCA will be building in the near future.

2006 – Kyle Drabek – The Woodlands, Texas

2005 – Colby Rasmus – Russell County HS, Alabama

2004 – David “Homer” Bailey – LaGrange HS, Texas

2003 – No Award Given

2002 – Jeff Francouer – Parkview HS, Georgia

2001 – Joe Mauer – Cretin-Derham Hall, Minnesota
