February 6, 2017 – Easton, PA - The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) is pleased to announce Brie Oakley of Grandview High School in Aurora, Colorado as the 2017 NHSCA Girls’ Cross Country Athlete of the Year Award.

Oakley, who only started running cross country as a junior, won Colorado’s Class 5A title last year and then won the Nike Cross National’s individual title by 28 seconds. As a junior, in her first state cross country meet, finished second. Then during track season, she set a 5A state meet record in winning the 3,200-meter and 1,600-meter races. Oakley will be attending the University of California, Berkeley in the fall.

Oakley, who also won Gatorade’s National Girls’ Runner of the Year Award, is an excellent student with a 4.6 grade point average. She’s the second straight Colorado runner to win the NHSCA Senior Girls’ Cross Country Athlete of the Year. Katie Rainsberger from Air Academy in Colorado Springs won the award last year.

“Brie is an excellent example what this award stands for,” said Eric Hess, Executive Director of the NHSCA. “Brie has excelled on the course and off. We congratulate her on an outstanding high school career and wish her good luck in college.”

This the 18th year straight year the NHSCA will honor achievers in the high school athletic community nationwide with its Athlete of the Year Award in 20 boys’ and girls’ sports. Other winners will be announced throughout the rest of the 2016-2017 school year.

Each one of the honorees will receive a beautiful trophy, plus they will be honored in the National High School Sports Hall of Fame Museum that the NHSCA will be building in the near future.
