Casey Clinger of American Fork HS named as the NHSCA’s Boys’ Cross Country Athlete of the Year

February 1, 2017 – Easton, PA - The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) is pleased to announce Casey Clinger of American Fork High School in American Fork, Utah as the winner of 2016-2017 NHSCA National High School Senior Boys’ Cross County Athlete of the Year Award.

Clinger, who has announced his verbal commitment to Brigham Young University, became the first boy to win back-to-back individual titles at the Nike Cross Country Nationals in December. Clinger closed-out his high school career by winning the 5A state title, his sixth in the sport. Clinger won the 2016 5A title with a course record of 14-minutes, 42.9 seconds.

Clinger has also won back-to-back Gatorade Utah Boys’ Cross Country Awards.

“Casey is an excellent example what this award stands for,” said Eric Hess, Executive Director of the NHSCA. “Casey has excelled on the course and off. We congratulate Casey on an outstanding high school career and all of his state titles.

For the first time ever, the NHSCA has honor a coach and athlete from the same school in the same year. On Tuesday, American Fork head coach Timo Mostert was named NHSCA National Boys’ Cross Country Coach of the Year.

Clinger is the first runner from Utah to win the award.

This the 17th year straight year the NHSCA will honor achievers in the high school athletic community nationwide with its Athlete of the Year Award in 20 boys’ and girls’ sports. Other winners will be announced throughout the rest of the 2016-2017 school year.

Each one of the honorees will receive a beautiful trophy, plus they will be honored in the National High School Sports Hall of Fame Museum that the NHSCA will be building in the near future.
