Pennsylvania runs away with 2016 Freshman division at the NHSCA National Wrestling Championships

The 27th Annual NHSCA National Wrestling Championships were held April 1-3, 2016 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  A total of 3,501 wrestlers participated in the momentous event.  The Freshman division showcased 613 wrestlers from 40 states. This includes 176 state place finishers as well as 42 State Champions.


Pennsylvania dominated the field finishing with one individual champ and four runner-ups. Pennsylvania also ran away with the team title with a total of 263.5 points. New Jersey came in second place with 225 points. Florida finished in third with California placing fourth with three champs. Both Ohio and Florida had two champs each.


Jason Kraisser of Centennial High in Maryland was the Freshman Nationals Outstanding Wrestler. He won the 132-title with a pin of Michael Weber of Forsyth, Montana in 1:36. He capped off the tournament with a fall in the finals over Michael Weber of Montana in 1:36, make that his fifth fall in a total of 7 minutes and 29 seconds. Kraisser’s older brother Austin was the 152 pound Senior National Champion.


Two nationally-ranked wrestlers won NHSCA titles — Matthew Olguin of Buchanan High in California and Julian Ramirez of Tampa Jesuit in Florida. Olguin, ranked #12 at 106 pounds, won the 113-pound gold medal with a 5-1 decision over Lucas Revano from Camden Catholic in New Jersey. At 152 pounds, Ramirez pinned Edmund Ruth of Susquehanna Township in Pennsylvania in 3:46.  Ramirez was ranked #12 at 152-pounds this past season.


California finished with the most Freshman champions with three. Aside from Olguin’s title at 113-pounds; Joseph Barnes of Gilroy captured gold at 145 and Ryan Reyes of Clovis West was the 170-pound champ. Ohio had two gold medalists in 120-pound champ Jordan Decatur of CVCA and 160-pound champ Gary Wokojance of Barberton.

Florida had two champs, Ramirez at 152 and Brevin Balmeceda of South Dade at 138-pounds.
