The National High School Coaches Association (“NHSCA”) is proud to announce Marilyn

Fitzgerald of Andover High School in Andover, Massachusetts as its National High School Girls’ Swimming Coach of the Year.

Fitger retired at the end of the 2018-19 school after leading her team to another undefeated season and the Massachusetts Division I team championship, the school’s 18th in the last nineteen years. The team finished a perfect 16-0 this past season, running its win streak to 60 straight meets over the last four seasons.

At the state meet, Fitger’s Warriors won seven gold medals in the 12 events, finishing with a dominating 518 points for the program’s fifth straight Division 1 state title

As reported by the Andover Townsman, after announcing her retirement, Fitger told the team, “Whether we were winning state championships or dealing with devastating news, I have never once regretted being your coach. The wins have been the frosting on the cake to watching you all do more than you thought possible.”

“We are extremely pleased to honor Coach Fitger,” said Eric Hess, Executive Director of the NHSCA. “She has established Andover as one of the top all-time swim programs in the State of Massachusetts during her 27 incredible years at the school.  She exhibits a strong dedication to supporting and developing her high school student-athletes on and off the football field.”

Fitger is the first coach from Massachusetts to win the NHSCA National Girls’ Swimming Coach of the Year Award.

Throughout April, the NHSCA will be announcing the 2018-2019 Coach of the Year honorees in 20 boys’ and girls’ sports. This marks the 20th consecutive year the NHSCA has honored achievers within the high school athletic community nationwide.

Each of the honorees will receive a beautiful plaque.  In addition, the Coach of the Year honoree will be displayed in the National High School Digital Sports Hall of Fame that is currently under development.
