The National High School Coaches Association (“NHSCA”) is pleased to announce Jake Renfree of Knoxville Catholic High School in Knoxville, Tennessee as its National Senior Boys’ Cross Country Athlete of the Year.

Renfree capped an outstanding scholastic career by winning the Tennessee Division I Large Class Cross Country championship. In the previous two state championship meets, Renfree finished second and fourth. After winning his first state title, Renfree headed to the Foot Locker National Championships in Southern California where he finished in second place. As a junior he finished fifth at the national championships.

Renfree, who will run on a scholarship at the University of Notre Dame, is an excellent student and will head to South Bend as a third generation pre-med student. He’s also a top-notch runner on the school’s track and field team. Renfree is the state’s defending Division I Large Class champ in the 3200. In 2017, he also won gold as a junior in the 1600, plus he won a gold medal being part of the school’s 4X800 relay team.

“Jake is an excellent example what this award stands for,” said Eric Hess, Executive Director of the NHSCA.  “He has excelled as much in the classroom as he has as a runner. We congratulate Jake on an outstanding high school career and wish him success at Notre Dame.”

Renfree is the second Tennessee runner to win the NHSCA Senior Boys’ Cross Country Runner of the Year Award. Andrew Bumbalough of Brentwood Academy won the award in 2005.

Throughout the next few months, the NHSCA will be announcing the 2018-2019 Athlete of the Year honorees in 20 boys’ and girls’ sports. This marks the 20th consecutive year the NHSCA has honored achievers within the high school athletic community nationwide.

Each of the honorees will receive a beautiful plaque.  In addition, the Athlete of the Year honoree will be displayed in the National High School Digital Sports Hall of Fame that is currently under development.
