The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) is pleased to announce Trice Pickens of Panther Creek High School in Carey, North Carolina as the 2017-2018 NHSCA National High School Senior Boys’ Tennis Athlete of the Year.

Last month, Pickens captured North Carolina’s 4A single championship with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over Mark Dillon of Myers Park in the state finals. The win avenged back-to-back losses in the finals as a sophomore and junior.

Pickens, who is considered a 5-star recruit by the Tennis Recruiting Network, will go on to play college tennis at Northwestern University. When he made his decision to attend Northwestern, he told Zoo Tennis, “It's a very disciplined tennis program, and I think Coach Arvid really focuses on development as a college and even a pro player afterwards. So that was a big part of me choosing there. The academics, you can't ignore that — that's a big part of it. I thought Northwestern is where my tennis can really prosper the most and it's a great academic opportunity.”

“Trice is an excellent example what this award stands for,” said Eric Hess, Executive Director of the NHSCA.  “Trice has excelled on the tennis court and in the classroom.  We congratulate him on an outstanding high school career and wish him good luck at Northwestern.”

Pickens is the first North Carolina student-athlete to win the NHSCA Boys’ Tennis Athlete of the Year Award.

This the 19th year straight year the NHSCA is honoring achievers in the high school athletic community nationwide with its Athlete of the Year Award in 20 boys’ and girls’ sports.  Other winners will be announced throughout the rest of the 2017-2018 school year.

Each one of the honorees will receive a beautiful trophy, plus they will be honored in the National High School Sports Digital Hall of Fame Museum that the NHSCA is currently designing.
