The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) is pleased to announce Tre Jones of Apple Valley High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota as the 2017-18 NHSCA National High School Boys’ Basketball Athlete of the Year.

Jones, who was a two-time winner of Gatorade’s Minnesota Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year award, won two state championships during his incredible career at Apple Valley that concluded in March with a runner-up finish in the Class 4A state championship game. As the team’s point guard, he averaged 23 points per game with over eight rebounds per contest and over six assists per game.

Jones, who carries a 3.53 grade point average, volunteers as a youth basketball coach and is part of an elementary school literacy outreach program. He was selected for the McDonald’s All-American Game and was named the Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year.

Jones, who has accepted a scholarship to Duke University, is the younger brother Tyrus Jones, who currently plays for the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves.

“Tre is an excellent example what this award stands for,” said Eric Hess, Executive Director of the NHSCA.  “Tre has excelled on the court and off.  We congratulate him on an outstanding high school career and wish him good luck in college.”

Jones is the first athlete from Minnesota to win the NHSCA Boys’ Basketball Senior Athlete of the Year Award.

This the 19th year straight year the NHSCA will honor achievers in the high school athletic community nationwide with its Athlete of the Year Award in 20 boys’ and girls’ sports.  Other winners will be announced throughout the rest of the 2017-18 school year.

Each one of the honorees will receive a beautiful trophy, plus they will be honored in the National High School Sports Hall of Fame Digital Museum that the NHSCA is currently designing.
