This event is the most prestigious high school event, in any sport, throughout the country. The 2016 National Championships culminated with a total of 3,687 registered participants.The numbers for the 2016 Junior Division: 976 Entries; 24 3x State Champions, 48 2x State Champions, 121 1x State Champions and 551 State Place Winners.

A springboard to greatness... NHSCA National Championship Events have seen hundreds of its participants enjoy illustrious college careers. Many NCAA champions and All-Americans and USA Olympians have competed in NHSCA National Championship Events when they were in high school. On average NHSCA Nationals alumni make an average of 15 of the 20 NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championship finals appearances each year. On average, 7 of the 10 NHSCA participants claim NCAA titles. 56 of the 80 2016NCAA All Americans competed here when they were high school career. The 2016 Junior Nationals produced some unbelievable talent that is going to be a threat for years to come on the collegiate level.

Accept no substitute... Modeled after the NCAA Division I Championship, the NHSCA National Wrestling Championships affords you the very best competition in the country and best chance to be noticed by college coaches. This is a showdown where the best meet the best. It will test your mental and physical toughness as a wrestler. This is a tremendous opportunity for the nation's top ranked wrestlers to collide with the "small school" state runner-up; put the rankings aside and prove that they are the top Junior wrestler in the country in their weight class. The top 8 place finishers in each weight class will officially be declared Junior All-Americans and will also be recognized at the National High School Sports Hall of Fame Museum. Truly a brilliant wrestling tradition... Don't miss your chance to be a part of it. One Junior Champion will be crowned in each weight class. The top eight place finishers in each weight class are officially declared Junior All-Americans and will receive a statue as well as an All-American certificate.

A showcase for college recruiting... Every college wrestling coach in the country has been invited to attend this event. Past events have served as tremendous showcases of recruiting for the college coach. Last year, over 200 college and university wrestling coaches attended the event. The list of schools included the top 25 Division I wrestling programs in the country. The NHSCA also includes free clinics throughout the event by the best of the best. There have been thousands of scholarships over the past 20 years awarded to individuals because of their performance at this event. Please do not confuse... The 28th Annual NHSCA High School Nationals with any other event. Eligibility- 11th grade


Wrestler must be enrolled in high school with Junior eligibility. There are NO exceptions!


Please Note: If you are NOT enrolled in 11th grade, you will be disqualified on the spot and will not be able to compete the 2018 Nationals Championships.


All wrestlers are asked to bring a copy of their most recent report card or birth certificate to registration/weigh ins as proof if needed.

Please Note: Entry fee will only be refunded with a doctor's note.

Federation weights will be in place:

106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, 285

There will be one weigh-in for the entire event with a 3-pound weight allowance.
i.e. 106 weight class will be 109 pounds

Wrestlers may compete at:

  • The weight class at which you entered your State's 2016-17 Individual or Dual Meet Championships
  • A higher weight class
  • As low as your "Minimum Weight Class" according to the NWCA Optimal Weight Calculator, verified by a hard copy of your schools Alpha Master Report.
    • If your state does NOT use the OPC, then you are required to wrestle no lower than the weight you wrestled at your Individual State or Dual Meet Championships.

For example: If your optimum weight calculator allows you to compete at 121.8, you are only eligible for the 126 lb weight class NOT 120. Your optimum weight calculator must allow you to compete at the "scratch" weight class. However, you can enter the same weight or any weight class higher.



Weight Changes

There are 2 options:

1.          Email Mattie at by midnight on Saturday, March 19, 2017.

a.       You will receive an email confirmation when change is completed.

b.      Any requests received after11:59pm will not be changed.

2.          Change when you weigh in at the tournament.

Please Note: There is no fee to change your weight on site!

Skin Issues

If your wrestle has any skin issues, please print this form for your doctor. Form must be filled out by doctor within 7 days of the start of competition at NHSCA Nationals and brought to weigh-ins.

Please note: We still reserve the right to override form if our head trainer/doctor sees any "active" skin issues.



Championship Bracket: 2-2-2

Consolation Bracket: 1-1:30-1:30

There will be full wrestle backs for all consolation matches.

Please Note: All American rounds will revert back to 2-2-2 matches.



The National Wrestling Championships will follow the strictest interpretation of the NFHS rules with the following exceptions:

  • Headgear is optional for high school
    • Unless a hair cover is required to meet grooming
  • Uniform type is optional i.e. high school, club, generic singlet, etc.
  • Shoe laces are secured if double knotted but at your own peril
  • College out of bounds rules will be used for control and near-fall/falls

Any appeals to rulings on the mat will require $50 on the table from the coach in order to be mediated by the head official.



All-American Status

The top eight place finishers in each weight class will receive awards as well as official recognition as Junior All-Americans.


Upon achieving all-American status, you will receive a certificate with your award.


All-Americans will also be recognized at the future National High School Hall of Fame Museum.

**Individual Awards will be given at the conclusion of the championship finals. You must be present on the awards stand during the presentation to receive your award. Make your travel plans according. Awards will NOT be shipped under any circumstances.**

Team (State) Award- The top scoring state will receive the award. The highest place finisher from each state will score for their state.

There is no penalty or fee to change your weight. Deadline for weigh changes prior to the event is midnight on Saturday, March 18th. All changes received after will occur on site at the scales. 

If you want to add state place finishes or seeding information once you registered, please email to Mattie by Saturday, March 18th at midnight for changes to be effective.

You are not required to have a coach at the event. If you are attending the Championships without a coach, you can sign up for the 'Orphan Coach' during the Wrestlers and Coaches.

 Lee Pritts Lee Pritts

Pritts is one of the best recruiters in the business. He has coached numerous National

Champions and All Americans including Ben Askren (Missouri), Max Askren (Missouri), 

Dom Bradley (Missouri), and Mark Ellis (Missouri). He has brought success at each school he coaches at. Pritts is a graduate of Eastern Michigan where is was a 3x NCAA Qualifier and was an All American in 1996.
David Hoffman  Dave Hoffman

Hoffman is currently the assistant coach at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. Prior,

he was the assistant at both Virginia Tech and Bucknell. Hoffman has led multiple wrestlers to All Americans including Joey Dance to the NCAA finals. Hoffman is a graduate of Virginia Tech.

He was an All American in 2006 for the Hokies.
  Kevin Dresser

Dresser will be taking over the helm at Iowa State on March 20, 2017.

Prior to, Dresser was the Head Coach at Virginia Tech since 2007. He

has produced 65 NCAA Qualifiers and 13 wrestlers that NCAA All Americans

a total of 20 times. Dresser was a NCAA National Champion for the Iowa Hawkeyes

in 1986. He was also a 2x NCAA All American and 2x Big Ten Champion. 
  Gene Mills

Mills is one of the most highly decorated wrestler in history. He was a New Jersey

State Champion as well as a HS National Champ. He was Syracuse's first 4x NCAA

All American and a 2x NCAA Champion. He went on to win 3 World Titles and was

an Olympic Team Member in 1980 and voted the “Athlete of the Year” by the US
Olympic Committee.

  Damion Hahn

Hahn is currently the Associate Head Coach at Cornell University. Since arriving at

Cornell,he has coached and mentored 11 NCAA individual Champions, 30 All Americans,

35 EIWA Champs and 53 first-team All-Ivy selections. Hahn has helped the Big Red win

both the Ivy league and the EIWA conference titles since 2006. Damion himself is no

stranger to winning.He won 2 NCAA titles while competing at Minnesota. He is the

fourth Golden Gopher to become a 4x All American.
  Chris Ortner

Ortner is the current Assistant Coach at D3 perennial powerhouse Wartburg.

Ortner has been with the Knights for the past eight seasons as an assistant coach

and head recruiting coordinator. The Knights havejust won their 13th NCAA title (most in

D3 history)  & 6 out of the last 7, 8 out of the last 10 NCAA Championships in D3.

They also just won their 25 straight Iowa Conference Championship in a row, as well as

11 NWCA National Duals titles.

 Scotti Sentes  Scotti Sentes

Sentes is currently the Assistant Coach at Campbell University. The Camels won the

Southern Conference. This is their first conference title in the history of the program.

Sentes himself was 2x NCAA All American with a 4th place finish in 2011 and 7th in

2009. He was also a 4x NCAA Qualifier for the Chippewas of Central Michigan. Sentes

was a 4x State Champion in Florida and was the 2008 NHSCA Senior National Champion.

What is the closest airport?
The closest airport is Norfolk. It is approximate 18 miles from the venue.

Do I have to wear a school singlet?
No! You can wear any singlet of your choosing. School singlets are fine provided your school does not have an issue.

Do I have to wear headgear?
No! Headgear is not required but recommended for your safety.

Do I need to be clean shaven for the tournament?
Facial hair must meet normal grooming standards; clean-shaven with sideburns no lower than the earlobes. If hair is longer than allowed by rule then a hair cover must be worn to satisfy the hair rule. If a hair cover is worn then a headgear is mandatory.

If I purchase a T-Shirt, will it be shipped to me?
No! You will pick up your t-shirt on site during the event from the World Wide Sports Supply T-Shirt Stand located in the lobby of the VBCC.

Can I bring a cooler into the tournament?
The VBCC does not allow any outside food or beverage.


Will there be a mat open to workout on Thursday?
Yes, mat space will be available during the weigh in times only!

Will there be a check scale available on Thursday?
Yes, a check scale will be available at the VBCC.

Do I need to have a coach?
No, you are not required to have a coach. We do have an “orphan coach” that you can sign up for at the event as well!

Does a coach have to check in Thursday?
No, coaches can check in anytime throughout the duration of the event to pick up or purchase an All Events Coach Pass.
