This event is the most prestigious high school event, in any sport, throughout the country. The 2015 National Championships culminated with a total of 3,498. The numbers for the 2015 Sophomore Division: 822 Entries; 130 State Champions featuring 25 2x State Champions, 80 1x State Champions, and 345 State Place Winners.

A springboard to greatness... NHSCA National Championship Events have seen hundreds of its participants enjoy illustrious college careers. Many NCAA champions and All-Americans and USA Olympians have competed in NHSCA National Championship Events when they were in high school. On average NHSCA Nationals alumni make an average of 15 of the 20 NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championship finals appearances each year. On average, 7 of the 10 NHSCA participants claim NCAA titles. 56 of the 80 2015 NCAA All Americans competed here when they were high school career. The 2015 Sophomore Nationals produced some unbelievable talent that is going to be a threat for years to come on the collegiate level.

Accept no substitute... Modeled after the NCAA Division I Championship, the NHSCA Nationals Wrestling Championship affords you the very best competition in the country and best chance to be noticed by college coaches. This is a showdown where the best meet the best. It will test your mental and physical toughness as a wrestler. This is a tremendous opportunity for the nation's top ranked wrestlers to collide with the "small school" state runner-up; put the rankings aside and prove that they are the top Sophomore wrestler in the country in their weight class. The top 8 place finishers in each weight class will officially be declared Sophomore All-Americans and will also be recognized at the National High School Sports Hall of Fame Museum. Truly a brilliant wrestling tradition... Don't miss your chance to be a part of it. One Sophomore Champion will be crowned in each weight class. The top eight place finishers in each weight class are officially declared Sophomore All-Americans and will receive a statue as well as 3 All-American certificates, one for you, one for your high school trophy case and one for your high school coach.

A showcase for college recruiting... Every college wrestling coach in the country has been invited to attend this event. Past events have served as tremendous showcases of recruiting for the college coach. Last year, over 200 college and university wrestling coaches attended the event. The list of schools included the top 25 Division I wrestling programs in the country. The NHSCA also includes free clinics throughout the event by the best of the best. There have been thousands of scholarships over the past 20 years awarded to individuals because of their performance at this event. Please do not confuse... The 27th Annual NHSCA National Wrestling Championships, Sophomore division, with any other event. All mats will also be webcast live from Virginia Beach by FLOwrestling.

Eligibility - 10th grade

Wrestler must be enrolled in high school with Sophomore eligibility. There are NO exceptions!

Please Note: If you are NOT enrolled in 10th grade, you will be disqualified on the spot and will not be able to compete the 2017 NHSCA National Championships.

All wrestlers are asked to bring a copy of their most recent report card or birth certificate to registration/weigh ins.

Federation weights will be in place:

106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, 285

There will be one weigh-in for the entire event with a 3-pound weight allowance.
i.e. 106 weight class will be 109 pounds

The wrestler may compete at:

  • The weight class at which you entered your State's 2015-16 Individual or Dual Meet Championships
  • A higher weight class
  • As low as your "Minimum Weight Class" according to the NWCA Optimal Weight Calculator, verified by a hard copy of your schools Alpha Master Report.
    • If your state does NOT use the OPC, then you are required to wrestle no lower than the weight you wrestled at your Individual State or Dual Meet Championships.

For example: If your optimum weight calculator allows you to compete at 121.8, you are only eligible for the 126 lb weight class NOT 120. Your optimum weight calculator must allow you to compete at the "scratch" weight class. However, you can enter the same weight or any weight class higher.

Weight Changes

There are 2 options to change your weight:

1.     Email Mattie at by midnight EST on Saturday, March 26, 2016

2.     Change when you weigh in at the tournament.

Skin Issues

If your wrestle has any skin issues, please print this form for your doctor. Form must be filled out by doctor within 7 days of the start of competition at NHSCA Nationals and brought to weigh-ins.

Note: We still reserve the right to override form if our head trainer/doctor sees any "active" skin issues.



All matches will be 2- 2- 2 in the championship bracket. Consolation matches will be 1-1.5-1.5. There will be full wrestle backs for all consolation matches. Please Note: All American rounds will revert back to 2-2-2 matches.



The National Wrestling Championships will follow the strictest interpretation of the NFHS rules with the following exceptions:

  • Headgear is optional for high school
    • Unless a hair cover is required to meet grooming
  • Uniform type is optional
  • Shoe laces are secured if double knotted but at your own peril
  • College out of bounds rules will be used for control and near-fall/falls.

Any appeals to rulings on the mat will require $50 on the table from the coach in order to be mediated by the head official.


All-American Status

The top eight place finishers in each weight class will receive awards as well as official recognition as Sophomore All-Americans.

Upon achieving all-American status, you will receive 3 certificates:

  • One certificate is for you
  • One for your school
  • One for your coach

All-American's will also be recognized at the National High School Hall of Fame Museum, currently under construction in Easton, PA.

**Individual Awards will be given at the conclusion of the championship finals. You must be present on the awards stand during the presentation to receive your award. Make your travel plans according. Awards will NOT be shipped under any circumstances.**

Team Award - The top scoring state will receive the award. The highest place finisher from each state will score for their state.

Entry fee will only be refunded with a doctor's note. Please email the note to Mattie at or fax to (610) 923-0800. Refunds will be processed in a timely manner.

There is no penalty or fee to change your weight. Changes made by midnight Saturday, March 26th will be completed. All other weight changes will occur at the scales. 

If you want to add state place finishes or seeding information once you registered, please email to Mattie by Saturday, March 26th at midnight for changes to be effective.

You are not required to have a coach at the event. If you are attending the Championships without a coach, you can sign up for the 'Orphan Coach' during the Wrestlers and Coaches.

Pat Popolizio Head Coach
North Carolina State
North Carolina State is currently ranked #2 in the nation. Popolizio took over the NC State position in 2012 after a successful run at Binghamton University (NY). He has turned the program into a national powerhouse.
Brian Smith
Head Coach
Smith has quite the resume after 17 seasons at Mizzou. Smith has coached a total of 25 All Americans and 5 NCAA Championships. Smith was named the MAC Coach of the Year the past three seasons and the Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2012. The Tigers are currently ranked #6.
Steve Martin
Head Coach
Old Dominion
Martin took over the helm at ODU in 2004 after a long and prosperous career at Great Bridge High School where he lead them to 13 state championships titles in 14 years. At ODU, Martin has coached 51 Monarch wrestlers to the big show with 7 becoming All Americans.
Gene Mills
Pin 2 Win Wrestling Club
He went on to compete at Syracuse University where he was the first 4x All American. He was also a 2x NCAA National Champion and the Outstanding Wrestler at the NCAA Championships. He was a member of the 1980 Olympic Team and was voted the “Athlete of the Year” by the US Olympic Committee.

To coach at the 27th Annual NHSCA Nationals – Fr, So, Jr, Sr divisions, you must:

1. Be a current member of the NHSCA - Click here to join today! – Membership is $30.

This All Event Pass will allow you to coach at the 27th Annual Nationals and the 17th Annual National Duals May 27-30, 2016 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

We would like to offer free admission to Active Military personnel with proper ID. Please come to the NHSCA table located in the main lobby.

What is the closes airport?
The closest airport is Norfolk. It is approximate 18 miles from the venue.

Do I have to wear a school singlet?
No! You can wear any singlet of your choosing. School singlets are fine provided your school does not have an issue.

Do I have to wear headgear?
No! Headgear is not required but recommended for your safety.

Do I need to be clean shaven for the tournament?
Facial hair must meet normal grooming standards; clean-shaven with sideburns no lower than the earlobes. If hair is longer than allowed by rule then a hair cover must be worn to satisfy the hair rule. If a hair cover is worn then a headgear is mandatory.

If I purchase a T-Shirt, will it be shipped to me?
No! You will pick up your t-shirt on site during the event from the World Wide Sports Supply T-Shirt Stand.

Can I bring a cooler into the tournament?
This is the discretion of the VBCC, not the NHSCA. Please contact the VBCC directly!

Will there be a mat open to workout on Thursday?
Yes, mat space will be available during the weigh in times only!

Will there be a check scale available on Thursday?
Yes, a check scale will be available at the VBCC.

Does a coach have to check in Thursday?
No, coaches can check in anytime throughout the duration of the event to pick up or purchase an All Events Coach Pass.
