February 6, 2018 – Easton, PA - The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) is pleased to announce Aiden Troutner of Timpview High School in Provo, Utah as the of 2017-2018 NHSCA National High School Senior Boys’ Cross Country Athlete of the Year.

Troutner closed-out his scholastic cross country career in exciting fashion with a come-from-behind win at the Nike Cross Nationals. Troutner won the Boys’ National Championship by coming from fourth place with 600 meters to go to upset race favorite Brodey Hasty from Brentwood, Tennessee. It was the third straight year that a Utah runner won the Boys’ National Championship. The 2016-17 NHSCA Boys’ Cross Country Athlete of the Year Casey Clinger of American Fork High School also won the race in 2016.

In addition to the national championship, Troutner won Utah’s 5A State Championship this past October. “I got third last year, and felt really good about it. So this year I knew I had a really good chance to win it", said Troutner after winning his state title. He won the 5A title with a time of 14-minutes-48.8 seconds.

Troutner, who will attend Brigham Young University in the fall, excels in the classroom in addition to volunteering in his community. He was also honored as KUTV TV’s America First Scholar Athlete in the fall.

“Aiden is an excellent example what this award stands for,” said Eric Hess, Executive Director of the NHSCA.  “Aiden has excelled on the course and off.  We congratulate him on an outstanding high school career and wish him good luck in Brigham Young University.”

It’s the second straight year that a runner from Utah wins the award. As previously mentioned, Casey Clinger of American Fork High School was last year's Athlete of the Year in Cross County.

This the 19th year straight year the NHSCA will honor achievers in the high school athletic community nationwide with its Athlete of the Year Award in 20 boys’ and girls’ sports.  Other winners will be announced throughout the rest of the 2017-18 school year.

Each one of the honorees will receive a beautiful trophy. In addition, the honoree will be featured in the The NHSCA Digital National High School Sports Hall of Fame, which is currently being designed.
