18th Annual NHSCA National Duals shaping up to be Star Studded Event

After a record breaking year last year, the 18th Annual NHSCA National Duals has once again jumped to a whole new level. This year’s event will showcase 368 teams, 46 more than last year, making this the largest dual meet tournament in the country. The three-day event known as the Battle at the Beach is brought to you by the National High School Coaches Association.  Many of the nation’s top wrestlers will again be competing at this year’s star-studded event held at the Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia over Memorial Day Weekend. Over 5,300 wrestlers are expected to participate on 58 mats.

 

This event is a true showcase for college coaches as these teams are jam packed with talent. The three divisions are – High School (Grades 9-12) featuring 189 teams, Middle School (Grades 6-8) with 89 teams and Elementary (Grades 4-6) highlighting 90 teams. Pool wrestling will kick off Saturday, May 27th and continue on Sunday. Monday will showcase the top teams in a bracketed competition. The finals are scheduled for 4pm. On Saturday, Olympic Gold Medalist and 4x NCAA Champion Cael Sanderson will be in attendance signing autographs at the ASICS booth. Sanderson, the current head coach at Penn State, has led the Nittany Lions to 6 NCAA Team titles since he took over the program in 2009.

 

The NHSCA National Wrestling Duals which features elite teams and wrestlers from over 30 states including wrestling powerhouses Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Illinois.

 

In the high school division, all 5 place finishers from the 2016 event are back including the Champions, Team Kong United. Last year’s Runner up, Young Guns Black is one of the teams that will be in the team hunt. Third and fourth place finishers Bison Legend Orange and Illinois Outsiders also return as well as 5th place Indiana High Rollers Black.  Other teams to watch this year include Team Shutt, Dark Knights, South Florida Lightning/CFWA and Prestige Worldwide.

 

The reigning Middle School team champions, Buxton Red Beards, are back and ready to defend their title. The top teams from last year’s tournament including Ohio Titans Scarlet, Buxton Extreme, Ohio Titans White, and IL Menace are looking to challenge for the title.

 

In the largest field to date of Elementary teams, Texas Dynamite Black is looking for another title after knocking off the perennial powerhouse NJ Scorpions in last year’s finals. The other top teams looking to take the stop spot include Buxton Extreme, Ohio Titan Scarlet, and rounding out the top 5, Young Guns Black.

 

Year in and year out, many of the nation’s elite wrestlers compete in this event. This year’s event is no different with top notch wrestlers from all over the nation ready to battle.
