The NHSCA, National High School Coaches Association, is pleased to announce Megan Walker of Monacan High School in Richmond, Virginia as the 2016-2017 NHSCA National High School Girls’ Basketball Athlete of the Year.

Walker, who will attend the University of Connecticut in the fall, averaged 26 points per game with eight rebounds per contest.  Monacan was a perfect 30-0 this season, winning its third straight Virginia Class 4A state title.  Walker finished her career with 2,067 points and was also named the 2017 Naismith Female Athlete of the Year.

She is no stranger to nation accolades. Walker was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year for 2017 and was all selected for McDonald’s All-American Team. In 2016, she was the Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year.

Walker is not just a basketball phenom. She has also excelled in the class rooms. She holds a 3.83 grade point average. She also volunteers in her spare time as a youth coach at a daycare center.

“Megan is the epitome of what this award is all about.” said Eric Hess, Executive Director of the NHSCA.  “Megan has excelled both on the court and in the classroom.  We congratulate her on an outstanding high school career and wish her the best of luck in college.”

Walker is the second Virginia girls’ high school basketball player to win this award. Elisabeth Williams of Princess Anne High School won the Girls’ Basketball Athlete of the Year award in 2011.

This the 18th year straight year the NHSCA will honor achievers in the high school athletic community nationwide with its Athlete of the Year Award in 20 boys’ and girls’ sports.  Other winners will be announced throughout the rest of the 2016-2017 school year.

Each one of the honorees will receive a beautiful trophy, plus they will be honored in the National High School Sports Hall of Fame Museum that the NHSCA will be building in the near future.
