The 28th Annual NHSCA, National High School Coaches Association, High School Nationals were held this past weekend at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Wrestling kicked off Friday, March 24th and concluded Sunday, March 26th. The 28th Annual NHSCA High School Nationals feature five divisions of competition: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Middle School on 40 mats under one roof.
The 28th Annual High School Nationals showcased many elite wrestlers from around the nation and broke the previous record with 4,013 wrestlers from 48 states and Germany competing on 40 mats. More than 1200 high school and college coaches as well as over 5000 spectators were in attendance.
The 2017 Sophomore Nationals had 922 entries from 44 states as well as Germany. There were 142 State Champions: 34 2x State Champions and 74 1x State Champions. There were also 401 State Placewinners.
Gabe Miller of Pequea Valley HS in Pennsylvania denied 2016 Freshman National champ Connor McGonagle of Timberlane HS in New Hampshire back-to-back national titles at the 28th annual National High School Coaches Association High School Nationals at Virginia Beach, Virginia. Miller, who was named the Sophomore Nationals Outstanding Wrestler pinned 2X New Hampshire state champ McGonagle in 2:50 to capture the 132-pound championship. Miller’s win avenged his loss to McGonagle in last year’s 132-pound Freshman National final.
Brevin Balmecceda of South Dade HS in Florida did win his second straight NHSCA national title. Balmecceda backed-up his freshman title with a 6-0 decision over Ryan Vulakh of Pope John II in Pennsylvania. This past season, Balmecceda won his first Florida state title with a 55-4 record.
Also going back-to-back was 2X Montana state champ Michael Weber of Forsyth HS. Weber edged Devin Schwartzkopf of Francis Howell Central in Missouri 2-1 in the championship match at 138.
At 160, Edmond Ruth, brother of 3X NCAA champion Ed Ruth, won his first NHSCA national title. Ruth, who attends Susquehanna Township HS, won his first Pennsylvania state title. In the 160-pound championship, Ruth nipped Jackson Turley of St. Christopher’s in Virginia. Ruth was a runner-up at last year’s Freshman Nationals.
Alabama had two champs from the same schools — Sam Latona at 106 and Gabe Hixenbaugh at 120. Both boys attend Thompson HS. Tennessee also crowned two champs — Mason Reiniche of the Baylor School at 152 and Michael Kramer of Wilson Central at 285.
