New York eked out title from Ohio with half point margin at 2016 Seniors

The 27th Annual NHSCA National Wrestling Championships were held April 1-3, 2016 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. A total of 3,501 wrestlers participated in the momentous event. The Senior division had a whopping 592 wrestlers from 43 states and Germany. This year’s event showcased 352 State Champions with 8 4x Champs, 24 3x Champs, 59 2x Champs, and 130 1x Champs. There were 498 state place finishers.
New York eked out the team title by a margin of one half point over Ohio. Virginia came in 3rd with 160 and Pennsylvania again finished in the top 4 with 153 points.
Iowa State-bound Kanen Storr of Leslie High School was named the Senior Nationals Outstanding Wrestler by beating Virginia Tech-bound Jarrett Degan of Belgrade High School in Montana in the 138-pound final. Storr, who is a three-time Michigan champ, beat Degan, who won last year’s 138-pound Junior National title, with a 4-3 decision and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler.
At 160 pounds, Daniel Bullard of Archer High School in Georgia taking spotlight with his third NHSCA national championship. The four-time Georgia state champ, who will wrestle next year with his twin brother Thomas, also a three-time NHSCA champ at NC State, won the title with a 3-2 decision over Florida state champ Elijah Cleary of Lake Highland Prep. Cleary will attend and wrestler at The Ohio State University. Bullard was ranked #9 nationally at 182-pounds by InterMat, while Cleary #12 at 170.
Tommy Cox of Deer Park High School in New York won his second straight national title with a 18-3 technical fall against Austin Neal from North Carolina in the championship at 113-pounds. Cox, who was ranked #6 in the nation at 113 pounds, will also wrestle at NC State.
Three-time Ohio state champ Jake Speiss of Delta High School, who was ranked #15 in the nation by InterMat, won the 132 pound title with a 3-1 overtime win over Connor Wallace from Virginia.
The 170 pound gold medal went to Abner Romero of Buchanan High in Colorado. Romero, ranked #17 at 160 pounds, defeated Dalton Robertson of Weld Central in Colorado 4-2 in overtime.
The 152-pound final featured two nationally-ranked wrestlers with Austin Kraisser winning a 5-2 decision over Parker Simington of Thompson Valley from Colorado. Kraisser was ranked #5 at 160 pounds, while Simington was #16 at 160.
Nationally-ranked Dakota Geer of Franklin High School in Pennsylvania, #6 at 182 pounds, won a 4-2 decision over #19 Antonio Agee of Hayfield in Virginia to capture the 182 pound gold medal.
Brendan Fitzgerald of from Ohio, who placed third at 138 pounds was awarded the Most Falls in the Least Time honor in the Seniors Nationals with five pins in a total of 3:51.
New York won the Senior Nationals team title with a narrow half-point victory over Ohio. Ohio had three champs, while New York had one champ. The big difference was New York had ten All-Americans, while Ohio only had two. Georgia and Virginia both crowned two national champs.
