Easton, PA – April 11, 2016 - The National High School Coaches Association (“NHSCA”) is proud to announce Drew Hunter of Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville, Virginia as its Senior National Boys’ Cross Country Runner of the Year.

This past season, Hunter capped a perfect cross county season by winning the Foot Locker National Championships.  The University of Oregon-bound Hunter won the national championship by setting a new course record in 14:55.70.  He was named All-Met Athlete of the Year by the Washington Post and was also named as the Gatorade Runner of the Year.

During the indoor track season, Hunter set and then reset the United States Record for the fastest indoor mile.  He’s only the second high schooler to break the four-minute mile indoors.

“We are extremely pleased to have Hunter as this year’s honoree in boys’ cross country,” said Bobby Ferraro, Executive Director of the NHSCA. “Hunter and the 20 young men and women we will be honoring throughout the 2015-16 school year represent the thousands of success stories produced in high school athletics. They have worked extremely hard to develop their skills and have become not just great athletes, but outstanding role models as well, and we are proud to be honoring them.”

Throughout 2016, the NHSCA will be honoring high achievers in the high school coaching community by naming Senior National Athletes of the Year in a total of 20 boys’ and girls’ sports.  It’s the 17th straight year that the NHSCA has presented its Senior National Athlete of the Year Awards.

Each one of the honorees will receive a beautiful trophy. In addition, they will be honored in the National High School Sports Hall of Fame Museum that the NHSCA will be building in the near future.

Hunter is the first student-athlete from Virginia to win the NHSCA Boys' Cross Country Athlete of the Year award.
