The bout marks the return to the wrestling mat for rising UFC® star and former Strikeforce Grand Prix Champion, Daniel Cormier, who competed for the U.S. Freestyle Wrestling World Team from 2000-2008, he finished fourth in the 2004 Athens Games and was selected captain of the 2008 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team which competed in Beijing. Cormier’s amateur wrestling experience also includes two NJCAA National Championships, All American honors as a
collegiate student athlete at Oklahoma State University and a bronze medal in 2007 at the FILA

Cormier possesses rare athletic ability with a larger than life personality outside the cage. His

Oklahoma State Cowboy wrestling alumnus is undefeated in his mixed martial arts (MMA)
career. He has dominated the action against UFC® legends including former two-time UFC®
heavyweight champion, Frank Mir, UFC on FOX: Henderson vs. Melendez, and stopping fellow

the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix in 2012. The list of athletes competing in the Strikeforce
Grand Prix included an impressive list of MMA legends: Fedor Emelianenko, Andre Arlovski,
Fabrico Werdum, Alistar Overeem, and Antonio Silva. Cormier defeated Silva by vicious
knockout in the second round of their semifinal matchup after replacing Alistar Overeem in the
Grand Prix tournament field. In the finals, Cormier looked like a seasoned professional with an
impressive unanimous decision victory over former UFC® heavyweight champion and Pride®
superstar, Josh Barnett.
“I am very excited to get the opportunity to wrestle one more match. I did not end my career on
the mat and it’s been eating at me ever since. I am very thankful to the UFC®, the Ultimate
Alliance and my sponsor, CF Athletic, for the opportunity to wrestle one more time in
competition. This is a big weekend for me and I am happy to be able to share it with the fans of
the UFC®. See you guys July 4th weekend in Vegas” said UFC® star Daniel Cormier via text
Chris Pendleton is no stranger to the big stage having garnered three All American honors as a
collegiate student athlete at Oklahoma State University and two NCAA Championships titles
(2004-2005). Both of Pendleton’s victories in the NCAA finals came against another undefeated
high profile mixed martial artist, Ben Askren. Like Cormier, Pendleton has been a regular
member of the U.S. Freestyle National Team and was coached at Oklahoma State by legendary
two-time Olympic Champion, John Smith. Pendleton currently serves as an assistant wrestling
coach at the University of Wyoming.
