One Week & Counting From the 24th Annual NHSCA High School Nationals

The NCAA Division 1 National Championships finished with history was made when Cornell’s Kyle Dake won his 4th title at a 4th weight class. Dake won the NHSCA Junior Nationals in 2007, the Senior Nationals in 2008 and began his illustrious collegiate career with his first NCAA title in 2009. Also winning a title was 3x NHSCA Champion and the 2008 NHSCA Wrestler of the Year, Jordan Oliver. Oliver is a 4x All American and 2x NCAA Champion from Oklahoma State. Other Nationals include 2010 Senior National Champion, Jesse Delgado (Illinois), Kendric Maple (Oklahoma University), 2009 Senior National Champion, Ed Ruth (Penn State), and 2009 Senior National Champion, Anthony Nelson (Minnesota). Other top performances to highlight include at 184, a 2008 Senior National Champion, Ben Bennett became Central Michigan’s first 4x All American.
We are now only a week out of the 2013 NHSCA National High School Wrestling Championships and the registrants continue to enter. There are over 1,700 registered for the 2013 NHSCA High School Nationals. The numbers keep climbing throughout the day. Currently, there are 46 states registered with the exception of Arkansas, Hawaii, Mississippi, and Wisconsin. There are also a handful of European countries represented.
“We're projecting 3,000 competitors this coming year."” said Bobby Ferraro, Jr., Executive Director of the National High School Coaches Association. “With more than two weeks to go before the competition, we have wrestlers registered from 45 states, plus entrants from Europe. The most important thing is the number of college coaches that our event attracts. As in years past, last year over 200 college coaches and 1,400 high school coaches descended upon Virginia Beach to check-out our incredible field of talent".
There are currently 350 Seniors registered including 279 state place finishers and 205 state titles. There are 7 4x State Champs, 17 3x State Champs, 24 2x State Champs, and 78 1x State Champions. New top registrants include:At 170, 3x National Prep placer and 2013 National Prep Champion, Nicky Hall from Wyoming Seminary enters the event. He finishes his prep career with a 45-5 season record and a 221-19 career record. At 152, Chad Walsh is a 4x state place winner from Camden Catholic High School, in Camden, New Jersey. Chad is the brother of current Indiana University Taylor Walsh who competed at the NCAA’s for the Hoosiers. His finished his final season with a record 149-18 and a season record of 42-2. Shane Tucker from Orangevale, California enters the Senior division finished the season with a 43-4 season record and a 179-22 career record. He is a ranked 10th in the nation and is a 2x State Runner Up and currently undecided. Taylor French is a 3x State Champ and 4x finalist from Forsyth, Montana heading to the US Naval Academy next year. He had a season record of 43-2 and a career record of 173-12. Michael Billingsley out of Winnemucca, Nevada has put up 4 State Championship titles while at Lowry High School. He enters the event at 170 with a season record was 33-1 with a career record of 189-18. Billingsley will be attached Air Force in the fall. Future Hokie, Jared Haught will be competing at the 182 pound weight class and is currently ranked 8th in the country. He is a 3x State Champion and 4x finalist from Big Springs, West Virginia. He will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall. He finishes his senior year with a season record of 50-0 and a career record of 197-6. Bryce Weatherston is a 3x State Champion and 4x finalist for Belgrade High School in Montana. He enters the event looking to cap off his senior year with another title. The future Wyoming Cowboy finished his career with a 141-14 record.
In the Junior division, there are 493 wrestlers entered with 297 state place finishers and 157 State Champions. There are 12 3x State Champs, 28 2x State Champs, and 65 1x State Champions to date. Top Juniors include: Jacob Palmgren, Tyler Ponte, and Clay Walker. Jacob Palmgren enters the event as a 3x state placer and a 2x State Champion for Piedra Vista High School. His season record is was a perfect 38-0. Wyoming Seminary’s Tyler Ponte comes into the event as a 2x Prep Champion. His record this season concluded at 42-8. Clay Walker hails from Eastside High School in Greer, South Carolina. He is a 3x State Champion with a career record of 181-6.
Currently registered for the sophomore division are 404 of our nation’s sophomores. There are 172 state placers and 72 State Champions. This includes 19 2x State Champs and 34 1x State Champs. Beau Billingsley at 160 finished his season with a record of 53-6, bringing his career record to 108-13. Following in his brother Michael’s footsteps, he is a 2x State Champion for Lowry High School. Ryan Friedman, from St. Paul’s in Maryland, looks to step atop the podium again. Friedman is a 2x state finalist and placed 3rd at the 2012 Freshman Nationals. Neal Richards, 2x State Champion from Matoaca, Virginia enters this year’s event after a 1st place finish at the 2012 Freshman Nationals. He boasts a 100-3 career record. 2012 Freshman National Champion at 170, Conor Ross, is also back to defend his title. Ross hails from Spring Hill, Florida and finished his season with a 3rd place finish and a 49-5 season record.
In the Freshman division, there are currently 312 entries with 92 state placers and 19 State Champions. Of the 19 State Champions, 9 are entered at the 106 pound weight class, including Jake Brindley, Tyler Warner, and Dylan Udero. Jake Brindley finished his freshman year on top for Lakeland Prep with a season record of 48-3. Tyler Warner of Claymont, Ohio enters the event with a 40-5 record. Dylan Udero from Las Cruces, New Mexico is a returning NHSCA Middle School All American. Udero finished his ignarual year with a perfect 33-0 record. At 113, there are 5 champions included Ben Anderson and Kyle Norstrem. Ben Anderson from Pleasant Grove, Utah finished his freshman season at 51-2. Anderson is also a 3x NHSCA Middle School All American and OW. Out of Brandon, Florida, Kyle Norstrem also enters the event as a Freshman State Champion with a record of 60-2. Also returning in NHSCA Middle School Champion out of Easton, Pennsylvania, joins the field at Jimmy Saylor at 132.
Last year was another record-breaking year with over 2,704 wrestlers competing in our five championship divisions: Senior, Junior, Sophomore, Freshman and Middle School. In the four high school divisions in 2012, there were over 800 state champions and 1,300 state place winners competing for the coveted title of NHSCA national champ. In addition to crowning individual champs, the NHSCA names wrestlers All-Americans for finishing in the Top 8 in each weight class. As in years past, all 28 mats will be webcast by the High School Television Network.
