The 12th Annual NHSCA National Pre-Season Wrestling Championships will be held on November 14, 2009 in the heart of the Pocono Mountains. This is one of the most scenic areas in Pennsylvania. The event is one of the most competitive pre-season wrestling tournaments in the nation.  This event has attracted nationwide media attention and attracts wrestlers from over 18 different states. The results heavily influence prestigious national wrestling polls for their pre-season national rankings.

If you want to be noticed, this is the event for you! Top wrestlers from across the nation use the NHSCA National Pre-Season Wrestling Championships as a final preparation for the beginning of the wrestling season.  This is a final tune-up prior to your season kicking off!  The top six finishers in each weight class are automatic qualifiers for the 14th annual NHSCA U.S. Open and National Beach Wrestling Championships.   See "Championship Events" on this website to see details for the U.S. Open.

Eligibility: Must be enrolled in high school  -  High School grades will be used to determine eligibility.

High School (Grades 9-12) - 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215, 285

Match Time: 1.30 - 1.30 - 1.30

Awards: The top 6 place finishers in each weight class will receive awards and qualify for the NHSCA National Open and Beach Wrestling Championships in the summer of 2010.  There will be Team Awards given to the Wrestling Club with the highest scoring total.   Make sure that you indicate the Club you are competing for on your registration sheet.



This is one of the very best off-season events in the country. Outstanding Wrestler award will be presented at the conclusion of the finals. You must be present on the awards stand at the finals in order to receive your award.

A Showcase for College Recruiting...Thousands of college scholarships have been secured since 1990 by competing in NHSCA Championship Events. Accept No Substitute... Last year, The National Pre-Season Championships featured elite competition from over 18 different states. The High School Division wrestlers went on to 39 state (or national prep) finals appearances between them (average of nearly three per weight class).  Blair Academy dominated the event last year with 8 crowned champions!

Advanced ticket sales for this event are discounted, so do not wait. Purchase your tickets today to see the very best wrestlers in the country compete for pre-season honors. Discounted tickets are available for this event for $10 for adults and $5 for students.

NOTE: Wrestlers and coaches do not need to purchase tickets. However, coaches must be 2009-2010 members of the National High School Coaches Association.  No other organization's cards will be honored. Coach memberships can be purchased online or at registration. A coach membership will allow the coach to accompany wrestlers to all NHSCA events.  Click Here to see a list of membership benefits.

All wrestlers must register online by November 11th.  You may change weight classes without penalty until November 12th. There will be a $20 penalty fee for changing weights after November 12.

The Entry / Insurance Fee is $35.

7:00 am - 8:30 am: Wrestler check-in and weigh-in, coach's registration and check-in, Pleasant Valley High School, Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania.

8:30 am:  Head Coach from Bucknell University, Dan Wirnsberger will be on-site to speak to wrestlers, coaches and parents.  This will be made available to all wrestlers and coaches. NCAA coaches present important topics such as: what a college coach looks for in a student-athlete, how to best prepare to compete at the next level, how to peak for the state tournament and more.

10:30 am: Wrestling begins for all divisions on 10 mats

7:00 pm: Championship and Consolation Finals

NHSCA TO HOLD 12TH ANNUAL PRE-SEASON WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP


EASTON, PA - The National High School Coaches Association will hold their 12th Annual Pre-Season Wrestling Championships, November 14, 2009 at Pleasant Valley High School in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.

The event attracts wrestlers from 18 different states with the results heavily influencing national wrestling polls for their pre-season national rankings.  It is also an opportunity for the high school wrestlers to showcase their talent for college recruiting.

Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ dominated the event last year crowning eight champions.  Blair Academy Head Coach, Jeffrey Buxton says, "Last year was the first time we attended the NHSCA Preseason Nationals as we brought our entire team. It was a valuable experience for all of our wrestlers as the competition was extremely good helping our kids prepare for the upcoming season. The NHSCA continue to support High School wrestling giving wrestlers the opportunity to improve and wrestle against the very best."

Top wrestlers from across the nation use the NHSCA National Pre-Season Wrestling Championships as a final preparation for the beginning of the wrestling season.  The top six finishers in each weight class automatically qualify for the NHSCA's 14th Annual U.S. Open and the National Beach Wrestling Championships.

The NHSCA, in partnership with Navy Special Operations conducts the Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge in 1200 high schools throughout America. This serves as a replacement for President Kennedy's Council on Fitness that was popular in the 1970's and 1980's. BLAIR ACADEMY CLAIMS 8 TITLES IN NATIONAL OPEN PRE-SEASON WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS; SCHOPP VOTED OUTSTANDING WRESTLER

EASTON, PA - Blairstown Township (NJ) Blair Academy, the winner of the last 28 National Prep Championship team titles, crowned eight champions in the 11th annual National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) National Open Pre-Season Wrestling Championships November 15-16 at Pleasant Valley High School in Brodheadsville, PA.

The top six place winners at each weight class qualified for the 2009 NHSCA National Open Wrestling Championships.

"The National Open Pre-Season Wrestling Championships is one of the very best tournaments of its kind in the nation," NHSCA associate executive director Bob Ferraro Jr. said. "This Pre-Season event is a unique experience that involves athletes from so many different parts of the country and allows for elementary through college/open competition under one roof. Many of the nation's top competitors are competing in preparation for the start of their high school seasons. A lot of great wrestlers have come through this event and gotten the confidence boost they needed for an outstanding season."

Wrestlers from 13 states - Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and West Virginia - competed in the event. Blair Academy won the team title.

Champions from Blair included freshman Mark Grey (103), sophomore Evan Silver (112), senior Sean Boyle (119), junior Chris Villalonga (130), sophomore Austin Ormsbee (140), junior Jesse Shanaman (160), senior Edward Ruth (171) and senior Ben Krakower (189). Double Cadet National champion Grey won all four of his matches by major decision. In the first of back-to-back one-point battles, Boyle won a 3-2 tie-breaker decision over New York state champion Steven Keith of Shoreham-Wading River in a battle of senior lightweights. At the following weight, junior A.J. Schopp of Tyrone (Pa.) High edged Blair's Garrett Frey 3-2. Schopp was voted the meet's Outstanding Wrestler.

Ruth won his title with three first-period pins and Ormsbee had three falls and a 12-0 major decision in his four matches. Villalonga won by forfeit over senior Tony Buxton in an all-Blair finals matchup.

Pennsylvania and New Jersey wrestlers each claimed two other titles. Eastern Pennsylvania wrestlers won back-to-back at 145 and 152. Junior Colin Shober of Leesport Schuylkill Valley High edged Phil Marano of Northampton High 3-2 for the 145-pound title and Eric Hess of Benton High won at 152. New Jersey's other titles came from Taylor Walsh (140) of Cherry Hill Camden Catholic High and Conor Sweeney (285) of Ramsey Seton Hall Prep.  The other title went to North Carolina state champion Christian McLean (215), a senior at High Point Southwest Guilford High.

The NHSCA continues its involvement in high-profile high school sports events across the board. In addition to a full schedule of wrestling events, the NHSCA conducted its annual 7-on-7 football championships at storied Hoover High School in Hoover, Ala. in July and will host the National High School Basketball Festival at Salisbury, Md. Dec. 26-30. The NHSCA selects Coaches and Senior Athletes of the Year in 20 boys and girls sports, and sponsors more than two dozen national championship events in 11 sports.
