The Lady Dolphins beat Montgomery Alabama Christian Academy for the second time in the tournament, 25-10, 25-21 in the finals. Liana Harris had 18 kills in the tournament and Julie Key had 22 kills, 45 digs and seven aces. Haley Hopkins added 23 kills, 23 digs and nine aces, while Beth Ogletree had 22 kills and 41 digs, Erin Brett had 32 assists and six aces and Stacey Brantley had 59 assists. Emily Brett also had 18 digs for Gulf Shores. The Lady Dolphins beat Auburn High, 25-16, 25-23, and Alabama Christian Academy, 25-19, 25-27, 15-5, in pool play before eliminating host Trinity 25-12, 25-23 in the semifinals. Alaska Two weeks ago after being knocked off its perch as the state’s top-ranked team, Juneau Douglas High toppled the new No. 1, host Palmer Colony High, 22-13. All-State quarterback Chris Hinkley passed for 90 yards and ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Defensive end Faifo Levale gave Juneau the lead for good in the third quarter when he blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a 14-13 lead. Arizona Senior volleyball player Christine Denning of Tucson Sabino High and senior football player Ben Alonzo of Glendale Independence High were named High School High Achievers of the Week for September 15 by the Arizona Republic. Denning, a four-year varsity starter at setter and team captain who was voted Class 4A Honorable Mention All-State, ranks No. 1 in her class with a 4.20 grade-point average and posted a perfect score on the math portion of the SAT. Alonzo holds a 3.9 GPA, the best among Patriot athletes, and is president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Arkansas Nettleton High senior Justin Hager, who lives near the third tee at Sage Meadows Golf Course, used his home-course advantage to shoot a 1-over-par 73, winning the Class 5A-East district crown Sept. 19 by three strokes over Blytheville High’s Brock Bullard. Hager birdied his home No 3 hole in braving rainy, windy conditions. Batesville High’s Steve Cesarski, Paragould Greene County Tech High ’s Noah Flanrey and Wynne High’s Bart Goodin (77) tied for third place. Batesville senior Erica Bolin (86) edged teammate Jessica Dailey by one stroke to repeat as girls champion. California Sacramento Grant High, ranked No. 1 in the area by the Sacramento Bee, pounded San Jose Valley Christian High 40-7 as Tim Lang threw three first-half touchdown passes and Marcelius Williams ran for three more scores. The Pacers (3-0) dominated from beginning to end, amassing 241 total yards (108 rushing, 133 passing) as they took a 26-0 halftime lead. Grant upped the lead to 32-0 on the first series of the second half when Christian Tupou blocked a Valley Christian (1-2) punt and Williams capped a 28-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. Williams added a 50-yard touchdown run to give the Pacers a 40-0 lead after three quarters. Colorado Senior Anguel Toley of Thornton High (15:30.9) outkicked Ben Johnson (15:33.0) and Dustin Martin (15:36.8) of team champion Albuquerque (N.M.) Academy to win the Division 1 individual crown in the Liberty Bell Invitational, a 5-kilometer course, at Littleton. Albuquerque Academy scored 93 points to 121 for Gillette (Wyo.) Campbell County High and 142 for Cheyenne (Wyo.) Central High. Tolev, a native of Bulgaria, has lived in the U.S. for eight years. Thornton finished 21st. Boulder Fairview High 's Sarah Cocco (18:11.3) won the Division 1 girls title over Fort Collins Rocky Mountain High's Ellie Rastall (18:13.2). Fort Collins High won the girls team title. Connecticut The controversial rule passed by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) that a coach would be suspended for one game if his team won a game by more than 50 points was appealed for the first time. Bridgeport Central coach Dave Cadelina was reinstated Sept. 19 after a three-member CIAC panel reviewed an appeal of his suspension and found no unsportsmanlike conduct in a 56-0 victory over Bridgeport Bassick High. Bridgeport Central scored 35 points in the first quarter against Bassick, which has lost 47 straight. Cadelina and referee Jim Carroll agreed to a running clock after the 35-point margin, and Central started substituting in the second quarter. Central was up 49-0 when a third-string running back scored in the third quarter. Carroll testified on Cadelina’s behalf, as did Bassick coach George Loughrey and principal Ron Remy. Delaware Wilmington Salesianum School (2-0) won its state-record 42nd consecutive soccer game Sept. 19, 2-1 over Haverford (Pa.) School. Goals by John Procope in the first half and Kenneth Howell in the second half gave the Sallies a 2-0 edge, and they held on for dear life after Haverford scored with 20 minutes to play. The win broke the previous record of 41 straight wins set by Wilmington St. Mark's High from 1999 to 2001. A victory over Newark High Sept. 16 allowed the Sallies to tie the record. Salesianum's last loss was to St. Mark's in the 2003 state tournament semifinals. Despite graduating eight starters from last year’s team, the Sallies are ranked No. 11 nationally and No. 2 regionally by the National Soccer Coaches Association. Florida Ranked No. 1 in the Orlando Sentinel’s Super Six teams, Orlando Edgewater High (3-0) shut out Kissimmee Osceola High 28-0 in the battle of unbeatens. Edgewater’s huge offensive line and double tight ends Max Purcell Jr. (6-2, 240) and Keiaron Jackson (6-0, 235) produced touchdown drives of 74 and 75 yards in the first half. Fullback Jeremiah Schwartz (16 carries, 76 yards) led the Edgewater ground game and tailbacks Jason Realford (20 carries, 61 yards) and Dejuon Jacobs both ran for touchdowns. Quarterback Robert Arnheim was 5-of-7 passing. The defense held Osecola with a completion in posting its third consecutive shutout. Georgia With seven players back from two-game suspensions, Snellville Brookwood High (1-2) traveled to downstate power Valdosta High and escaped with a 9-7 victory. Zach Simmons kicked three field goals, including the game-winner from 41 yards out with 7:25 remaining. Junior quarterback Daniel Peek’s 55-yard pass to Patrick Moran (four receptions, 123 yards) – on a drive Brookwood started at its own 1-yard line – set up the winning field goal. Jared Reine’s interception with 1:30 remaining sealed the win. Valdosta (1-2) didn’t cross midfield until late in the third quarter, but went all the way, taking a 7-6 lead on Michael Turner’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Brian Mathis. Hawaii Honolulu Punahou High senior Larissa Nordyke celebrated her birthday with a match-high 11 kills in a 25-17, 25-23 sweep of defending state champion Honolulu Kamehameha School Sept. 16. The Buffanblu (4-0) used a 6-0 run to go up 22-14 and then squashing any comeback hopes by the Warriors. Kamehameha (5-1), ranked No. 11 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com, rebounded in the second game, taking a 20-15 lead after kills by Alex Akana and Tati Santiago before Punahou rallied. Liz Ka'aihue, like Nordyke a 2004 Honolulu Advertiser All-State First Team selection, finished with nine kills and Shaena-Lyn Kuehu added four blocks, including three solo stuffs. Kanani Herring led Kamehaheha with 10 kills. Idaho Senior Brock Cutler kicked a 26-yard field goal with 1:58 remaining to give Boise Centennial High (3-0) a 10-9 victory over Meridian Mountain View High in a battle of unbeatens. The Patriots remained atop the Class 5A Southern Idaho Conference while improving to 6-0 all-time against Mountain View. Josh Borgman had punt returns of 42 and 27 yard gains and blocked an extra-point attempt in the second half to provide Centennial’s margin of victory. Matt Anderson’s interception set up Centennial’s only touchdown, a 6-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Grigsby to Jess Walters in the third quarter. Justin Rowley’s 1-yard run gave Mountain View (2-1) a 9-7 lead before Borgman got a hand on the extra point. Illinois Chicago Mother McAuley High, ranked No. 4, downed Lockport High 25-12, 25-20 in a battle of southern Chicago powerhouses. The Mighty Macs got defense – 14 digs from senior Brittany Cermak, 10 from junior Carli Weiler, nine from junior Melissa Joyce and eight from senior Megan Dunne. So was serving, as Cermak landed five aces, senior Kim O'Brien three and Joyce two. Offensively, Ashley O'Brien had seven kills, Kim O'Brien six and sophomore Kelly Griffin five, while Cermak handed out 26 assists for McAuley (5-2). Lockport (4-6) was led by junior Brigid O'Brien (6 kills), senior Jenna Finger (13 digs), junior Katie Novak (8 digs) and junior Jackie Major (7 assists). Indiana Boonville High senior Maggie Wood, a state qualifier a year ago, shot a 2-over-par 72 for earn medalist honors in girls sectional play Sept. 16. Wood, who shot even-par 35 on the front nine and 37 on the back nine, won by three strokes over senior Ellen Mueller, who led Evansville Memorial High to the team title. Memorial shot 326 to win by 26 strokes over Evansville North High. Boonville (374) finished third, becoming the final team to advance to regional competition at Bedford. Iowa Fourth-ranked Ankeny High dominated No. 2 Johnston High 104-66 in a girls swimming clash between the upper echelon of the CIML Central Conference Sept. 19. The Hawkettes won all of the individual events as well as the 200-yard medley relay. Jaryn Studer and Amanda Johnson each were part of three winning events. Studer won the 200 individual medley in 2:14.22, the 100 butterfly in 1:02.89 and was part of the 200 medley relay that won in 1:54.51. Studer, Ashley Johnson, Amanda Johnson and Shelly Lacy were also on the relay. Amanda Johnson won the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.02 and the 50 freestyle in 25.19. Kansas After scoring three times in the first half, the Hutchinson High boys soccer team exploded in the second half in an 8-1 victory over Arkansas City High Sept. 16. The Salt Hawks (6-2), who won their fifth consecutive game, needed only 11 minutes in the second half to double their 3-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder Jordan Getting, who notched his first career hat trick, scored a pair of goals in the 47th minute, and Cody Lucas made it 6-0 with a 51st-minute goal. Lance Dick, Getting and senior Skyler Schwartz (two goals, two assists) scored in the first half. In their past two games, the Salt Hawks have outscored their opponents 13-1. Kentucky The Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control voted to expand the state football playoffs from four to six classes for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. The realignment also will boost the number of teams advancing to the playoffs from 128 to 192. The realignment will create 20 four-team districts, 23 five-team districts and five six-team districts. Four teams from each district will qualify for the playoffs. The Board also voted to reduce the realignment’s effective period from its original four years to two years. That will allow some schools with fluctuating enrollments to possibly change classes starting with the 2009 season instead of having to wait until 2011. Louisiana For what coach Erik Willis believes to be the first time in school history, St. John of Plaquemine High is ranked No. 1 after the Eagles garnered five first-place votes and 133 points in the Class 1A rankings released by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. St. John outdistanced co-No. 2s Opelousas Westminster Christian School (3-0) and Shreveport Evangel Christian School (0-2), both with 115 points. Evangel, which lost 43-16 to Southlake Carroll High, the top-rated Class 5A team in Texas, also picked up five first-place votes. Maine Shane Walton rushed for 178 yards on 34 carries, and Ian Edwards added a pair of short touchdown runs as host Bangor High (3-0) rallied from a 7-6 halftime deficit earned a 21-14 Pine Tree Conference Class A football victory over Brunswick High Sept. 16. Edwards scored on a 3-yard run and then ran for a two-point conversion to give the Rams a 14-7 lead with 1:35 left in the third quarter. Kyle Vanidestine’s 3-yard run in the fourth quarter capped an 83-yard march and extended Bangor’s lead to 21-7. Brunswick (1-1) got a 50-yard TD run from quarterback Russell Thompson with 1:57 left, but Bangor recovered the subsequent onside kick and ran out the clock. Maryland Hampstead North Carroll High (4-0, 3-0) edged defending Class 2A state champion Sykesville Liberty High 2-1 Sept. 19, the Panthers’ first win Liberty in recent memory. North Carroll held the host Lions scoreless for the final 75:38, erasing an early 1-0 deficit on first-half goals by Tim Wineke and Jacob Stocksdale to a key Carroll County win. Liberty (3-2, 0-2), which had a pair of red-card ejections, outshot North Carroll 11-4 and took a 1-0 lead on Conor Rigby’s goal in the fifth minute. Massachusetts Hyannis Barnstable High’s girls volleyball team extended its winning streak to 77 with a 3-0 win over host North Quincy. Despite falling behind early in the first two games, Barnstable managed to hold North (5-1) winless. The victory was the 400 th for Barnstable coach Tom Turco, now in his 19th season at the school. Sophomore middle hitter Stephanie Bristol had 10 kills and five aces and senior outside hitter Natalie Cohen contributed seven kills and one ace. The Raiders got strong serving from junior setter Amanda Parker, who scored six straight points in the first game, and senior Marissa Pita, who scored eight straight in the final game. Michigan Visiting Bay City Central High rolled to a 28-7 lead against Flint Central and never looked back in rolling to a 56-27 win, improving its record to 4-0 both overall and in the Saginaw Valley League. The Wolves piled up 456 total yards, Luther Ware rushing for 149 yards and quarterback Derek Dalzell rushing for 88 on only seven carries. Ware scored on a pair of 1-yard touchdowns in the first quarter and Dalzell threw touchdown passes of 40 yards to Sergio Campbell and 22 yards to Derrick Smith. Nick Thompson added a 33-yard scoring run and Jordan Bannerman kicked the first of two field goals, a 36-yarder, as the Wolves took a 38-14 halftime lead. Minnesota Eden Prairie High, No. 1 in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune metro rankings, won its first two football games this season by a combined score of 85-14. The Eagles’ first big test came Sept. 16 at Rosemount in a Lake Conference game. The Irish also were unbeaten, with a total margin of 84-18. No problem for Eden Prairie (3-0) as five players scored touchdowns in a 33-7 victory. Ryan Grant, who threw for three touchdowns, including first-period scores of 15 yards to John Carruth and 5 yards to Carter Bykowski. Zack Armstrong returned a fumble 29 yards to give the Eagles a 20-0 halftime lead. Defensive end Willie Mobley had five sacks for Eden Prairie. Mississippi Madison Central High (3-1), No. 9 in the Jackson Clarion-Ledger Super 10, got 152 rushing yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown from senior tailback Don Smith and beat Brandon High 24-12. Wide receiver Justin Owen, a junior converted to quarterback due to starter Jared Foster’s injury, threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Carlton Ollie to start the scoring. touchdown pass. Ryne Smith's 24-yard field goal gave the Jaguars a 10-0 halftime lead. Terrence Nelson's 52-yard fumble return set up Pat Harrison's 5-yard TD run in the third quarter, making it 17-0. Brandon (2-2) outgained Jackson Central 370-298, but didn’t score until the fourth quarter. Missouri Ashland Southern Boone County High pitcher Julian Austin had thrown a no-hitter in her previous outing, striking out all 15 batters she faced. But Columbia David Hickman High’s offense was able to solve Austin Sept. 19 in a 5-3 victory. Hickman (12-6) did most of its damage in a four-run fourth inning. Morgan Bichsel singled, Lindsey Hart reached on an error and Whitney Grathwohl walked to load the bases. One out later, Laura Miller lined a two-run double to center, and a throwing error helped two more runs score on the same play. Hickman pitcher Taylor Cowan struck out nine, did not allow a base runner in five of her seven innings and was touched for only two hits. Montana For the second straight week, Billings Senior High soiled an unbeaten record. The Broncs rode the all-around performance of Mo Burrough to a 28-16 victory over Gilliette (Wyo.) Campbell County High. The victory came a week after the Broncs handed cross-town rival Billings West High its first loss. Burrough (31 carries, 166 yards), a junior, scored three touchdowns and Josh Colvin added 90 ground yards and a score. Burrough also made an impact on defense and special teams, intercepting a pass in the first half and returning a punt 41 yards in the third quarter which set up Senior's last touchdown. Burrough rushed for 168 yards in the victory over Billings West. Nebraska Omaha Marian High’s Emily Sisson ran the 4,000-meter course in 14:25, breaking the existing meet record by 40 seconds to lead Marian to the team title in the Omaha Creighton Prep Invitational Sept. 18. Marian’s Kelli Budd (15:48), who finished second, also broke the record. Plattsmouth High's Adam Mitties (15:55) won the 5,000-meter boys race, also in record time. Omaha Benson High won the title as Ter Dui (16:05) finished second, Willie White fifth, Jaron Hall seventh and Jared Hall eighth. Plattsmouth finished seventh. Nevada Top-ranked Las Vegas Cimarron Memorial High (4-0) scored a pair of defensive touchdowns in a span of 13 seconds in a 28-6 home victory over No. 6 Las Vegas Centennial High. Nick Rhodes returned an interception 5 yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter. On Centennial’s next offensive play, Darius Hogans scooped up a fumbled lateral and returned it 19 yards to make it 14-0. Eric Brinkley (11 carries, 91 yards) scored on a 35-yard run to make it 21-0 at halftime. Eddie Wide (26 carries, 118 yards) scored on a 22-yard run with 3:03 to play. New Hampshire Exeter High (7-0), one of two undefeated Class L teams, had a string of five consecutive shutouts snapped, but still beat Londonderry High 4-1 Sept. 20. Liam Connolly scored on an assist from Sean Coleman and Sergio Guindon also scored to give Exeter a 2-0 halftime lead. Matt Pope scored on a breakaway and J.J. McBride made it 4-0 midway through the second half. Londonderry (5-2) outshot Exeter 23-18 but was able to scored only on Robbie McLarney’s goal with four minutes remaining. It was just the second goal allowed this season by Exeter’s Kyle Connolly, who had 10 saves. New Jersey West Long Branch Shore High’s field hockey team successfully defended all 11 of Rumson-Fair Haven High’s penalty corners, and the offense converted on a breakaway and a penalty stroke for a 2-1 Shore Conference Class B Central victory Sept. 19. Shore (4-0, 3-0) got its first goal on a breakaway attempt by Marguerite Chavez in the 15th minute. Shore maintained that 1-0 advantage into halftime. In the second half, Liz Ferraro transformed a penalty stroke opportunity into another goal and a 2-0 lead. Rumson-Fair Haven (2-1, 2-1), which played its first home game on the school's new artificial turf, got its only goal from Catherine Bitterly in the 52nd minute. New Mexico Albuquerque La Cueva High (1-2) lost to an Albuquerque opponent for the first time in six years and 43 games, 33-17 to Abuquerque Eldorado High, winless and playing without its starting running back. Richard Bohlken’s two touchdown runs gave LaCueva a 14-6 first-half lead. But the La Cueva offense never got into the end zone again and rushed for just 45 yards in the second half. Meanwhile, the Eagles took over as Sean Roney ran for three touchdowns, including a 58-yard burst through the heart of the La Cueva defense that gave Eldorado (1-3) a 20-14 lead. New York Guilderland High senior Brian Rhodes-Devey won the Guilderland Invitational cross country meet, winning the 2.7-mile, Division 1 race in a course-record time of 13:35.82, smashing his own course record from a year ago by more than 22 seconds. Danbury (Conn.) High won the Division I team title, followed by Uniondale Kellenberg High and Ballston Spa Burnt Hills High. Burnt Hills sophomore Meaghan Gregory (16:24.7) led wire-to-wire to repeat as girls Division 1 champion and led her team to the title. Stephen Scrafford of Cooperstown High (boys) and Mary Kate Champagne (girls) of Plattsburgh Seton Catholic High were the Division 2 champions. Morrisville Green Hope High (5-3-1, 1-1-1) sophomore forward Martin Murphy scored on a free kick from 30 yards out with just over two minutes to play in the second overtime and tied defending Class 4A boys soccer state champion Apex High 2-2 in Tri-Eight Conference play Sept. 18. John Hindman gave Green Hope a 1-0 lead late in the first half. Apex (4-0-2, 1-0-1), which kept its 30-game non-losing streak alive, tied the score on Lucas Carpenter’s second-half goal and took an overtime lead, 2-1, when Forrest Moog headed a ball thrown in by Tyler Suite. North Dakota Defending Class A state volleyball champion Dickinson High (12-1, 5-1 West Region) needed just 59 minutes to dispatch host Bismarck High 25-16, 25-20, 25-8. The Midgets, whose 12-man roster includes nine seniors, broke away from a 12-11 lead in the first game, outscoring Bismarck 63-33 the rest of the way. Dickinson’s 6-foot-4 All-State middle hitter, Katelyn Steffan, had 11 kills and four blocks. Paige Nash added 10 kills and Whitney Wellenstein six for Dickinson, which got 29 assists and eight digs from Whitley Abrahamson. Ohio In the marquee game of the McDonald’s Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge, Cincinnati St. Xavier High, ranked No. 8 nationally, fell 25-22 in overtime to No. 3 Lakeland (Fla.) High at the University of Cincinnati before Sept. 16 before over 12,000 fans. It was the defending Class 4A state champion’s first loss in 18 games over two years. Two-time defending Class 5A champion Lakeland got the ball first in overtime, scoring on a 41-yard field goal by senior Matt Rodenberry. Steve Wilks’ interception on St. Xavier’s series ended the game. Junior Danny Milligan’s third field goal of the game, a 36-yarder, helped St. Xavier send the game to overtime. Oklahoma Hobart High (2-1) ended Clinton High’s 29-game winning streak Sept. 15, rallying for a 15-14 victory over Class 3A’s top-ranked team. On the first play of the third quarter, Hobart quarterback Brett Appling threw a pass to T.J. Norman, who lateraled to Jonathan Gelnar. Gelnar completed the hook-and-lateral play for an 85-yard touchdown strike. Then, trailing 14-7 with 1:23 left remaining, Appling threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Norman and Gelnar ran for the game-winning two-point conversion. It was Clinton’s first home loss since 1998, a span of 48 games. Oregon University of California commitment Brandon Jackson (26 carries, 221 yards) rushed for three touchdowns in his first game of the season as fourth-ranked Eugene Marist High knocked off No. 1 Scappoose High 27-17 Sept. 16. Jackson, who missed the first two games of the season with a broken finger, carried the ball 26 times with a cast on his left hand. He overcame a slow start by tallying 194 yards on his final 15 carries. The All-State back opened the scoring on a 55-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, putting Marist ahead 6-0. He added touchdown runs of 8 and 7 yards to put Marist back in command after Scappoose had taken its only lead of the game at 7-6. Pennsylvania McMurray Peters Township High sophomore Alison Riske joined her older sister, Sarah, as the only girls tennis players from her school to win a Class 3A Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) title, Riske breezed past Greater Latrobe High's Joelle Kissell, Pittsburgh Fox Chapel High's Sarah Dieffenbach and Murrysville Franklin Regional High's Kayllie Wang, losing just two games, before winning the title 6-2, 6-1 over Pittsburgh Shady Side Academy's Lauren Greco. Sarah Riske won WPIAL Class 3A titles in 1995, 1997 and 1998, also won state crowns in 1997 and 1998 and went on to star at Vanderbilt University. Rhode Island Cranston West High scored all of its goals in the first half’s final 20 minutes and defeated Woonsocket Mount St. Charles High 3-0 in a Division II-North showdown Sept. 19. Crissy Darwell and Jenna Matiszewski eazch had a goal and an assist and Alyssa Guidici also scored for the Falcons against a team that had allowed just three goals in its first three games. Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Kahan recorded five saves to earn the shutout. South Carolina Four-time defending Class 5A state champion Duncan James F. Byrnes High (4-0), ranked No. 2 nationally, rallied from a 20-7 second-quarter deficit to beat Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller High 21-20 before 10,000 fans in the McDonald's Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge at the University of Cincinnati Sept. 16. The Crusaders missed a potential game-winning 41-yard field goal attempt in the final minute. South Dakota Parkston High swept team honors at the Tyndall Bon Homme Cross Country Invitational. Scotland High put two runners in the top three, led by champion Molly Kokesh (16:09), but the Parkston girls claimed six spots in the top 10 to edge out the Lady Highlanders by one point. Parkston's Alena Laber (16:17) finished second, followed by Scotland's Kristin Neth and Parkston's Danielle McCann. Alex Munterfering blew out the competition in the boys race, putting 1:38 between himself and runner-up Brandon McAdaragh of runnerup Wagner High, to lead the Trojan men to a four-point victory. Scotland's Aaron Auch was third, with Bon Homme's Madison Holland fourth. Tennessee After missing a potential game-winning 26-yard field goal attempt with three seconds remaining in regulation, Nashville John Overton High junior kicker Forrest Armstrong calmly nailed a 27-yarder to give the host Bobcats (2-2, 2-0) a heart-stopping 18-15 victory over previously-unbeaten Antioch High and a share of first place in Region 5-5A. Overton’s Daniel White (24 carries, 188 yards) scored on a 28-yard run in the first quarter and Jordan Hale threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Morrison in the second quarter, giving Overton a 15-8 halftime lead. Antioch (3-1, 1-1) forced overtime on quarterback Vincent Bradford’s 9-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter. Texas Bianca Sauls, a 5-foot-11-inch senior, had 12 kills and 19 assists to lead Pflugerville High to a dramatic five-game victory over host Round Rock McNeil High, 25-21, 15-25, 26-24, 15-25, 16-14. The Sept. 19 meeting was the third of the season between the schools, and each match has been decided by two points in the fifth game. Pflugerville (18-6, 3-1 District 14-5A) built an 11-8 lead in the decisive fifth game before McNeil (19-6, 3-1) rallied on a pair of kills by Sarah Arldt (19 kills) and two Pflugerville errors to take a 12-11 lead. Pflugerville rallied as Elise Swearengin (13 kills) recorded a block for the winning points. McNeil’s Kelli Becerra had 47 assists. Utah Draper Juan Diego Catholic High (4-1) rushed for 277 yards – 233 by senior tailback Mychal Robinson – and pounded out a 17-6 victory over Garland Bear River High Sept. 16. Juan Diego quarterback Corey Lever completed just one pass, but it went for a touchdown to Jacob Bentrude. The Soaring Eagles defense held Bear River (1-4) to 87 rushing yards. A 99-yard scoring drive, capped by quarterback Blake Adams’ 60-yard touchdown pass to Zach Christofferson in the game’s final minute, helped Bear River score in its 100th consecutive game, the state’s second-longest current streak and a feat accomplished by only 10 other programs in Utah history. Vermont Bennington Mount Anthony High’s boys cross country team captured the first eight places to triumph handily over Rutland High by a score of 15-50. Sophomore Doug Amos completed the course in 18:18 course for his first career victory. Steve Vargo (18:30), Woody Roxon (18:51), Chris Stevenson (19:17), Nick Costatino (19:21), Ian Dulin (19:48), Matt Houran (18:55) and Sam Jewet (19:56) completed the Patriots sweep. got several strong individual efforts but ended up on the short end of a 22-36 score. Mekenzie Krause (21.00) came within one second of her own course record and won the girls race, but the Patriots fell 22-36. Virginia Chester Thomas Dale High shot 318 to win the Class 3A Central District golf tournament Sept. 18. Scoring for the Knights were Chris Lumpkins (76), Mike Swope (78), Ben Kidwell (81) and Wes Sides (83). The regular-season champion with a district record of 7-0, Thomas Dale already had clinched an automatic regional berth. Prince George High and Colonial Heights High tied for second place at 324, Prince George winning a one-hole playoff for the second regional berth. Colonial Heights’ Andrew Fontaine shot 74 to earn medalist honors, while Prince George’s Jonathan Capecci was voted District Player of the Year. Washington Playing with the memory of teammate Alex Ward, killed in an automobile accident the previous Sunday, Lacey North Thurston High pounded Tacoma Clover Park High 48-25 Sept. 16 in Class 3A Western Cascade Conference play. Quarterback Kaleb Wilson (11-of-15, 118 yards) threw four touchdown passes, two to Brett Roberson and one each to D.J. Kirkwood and Sam Reiner. Fullback Zarak Cortez-Simmons, who once blocked for Ward in the North Thurston backfield, rushed for 162 yards on 11 carries and scored on runs of 37 and 54 yards. West Virginia After battling to a scoreless halftime tie against Belle Riverside High, No. 5 Parkersburg High (4-0) finally got untracked for an 18-7 victory to stay unbeaten. Riverside (1-2), a 42-0 loser at Parkersburg last year, grabbed a 7-6 lead with 5:41 left in the third quarter on Nick Veazey’s 72-yard touchdown pass to Chuckie Erby and Chris Inghram’s extra-point kick. Junior Matt Lindamood (15 carries, 130 yards) scored all three Parkersburg touchdowns, on a 5-yard pass from quarterback Andy Thomas and on runs of 22 and 11 yards that gave the Big Reds the lead for good. Wisconsin Visiting Racine Case High ended a 19-year victory drought against Kenosha Tremper High Sept. 16, winning 13-9 in a Southeast Conference game. Dennis Fisher passed for 166 yards and two touchdowns for Case, which last beat Tremper on Oct. 22, 1987. Linebacker Kirk Wildes, who had a key interception, led a defense limited Tremper to 171 total yards. Mike Stewart’s 1-yard run gave Tremper a 7-0 second-quarter lead before Case took over. Fisher threw touchdown passes to Eric Yttri and Matt Jenkins, both from 11 yards out, in the third quarter. Wyoming Douglas High (1-1) raced to a 21-0 halftime lead and went on to give new coach Jay Rhoades his first victory, 28-14 over Glenrock High. Drew Hodgs (11-of-26, 196 yards) threw the first of two touchdown passes to Blake Richendifer, a 46-yarder, in the first quarter, and Payden McIntyre (17 carries, 83 yards) ran for two second-quarter touchdowns to pad the lead.
