Salem quarterback Rick Kresinske, who threw interceptions on his team’s first three possessions and fumbled on the fourth, ran 3 yards for a touchdown and passed for 185 yards, throwing touchdown passes of 38 yards to Jamel Conley and 45 yards to Leon Johnson. Freshman quarterback Phillip Sims passed for 249 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Wilson, for Oscar Smith (10-2), which lost in the regional final for the third consecutive year. Washington Quarterback Marshall Lobbestael, given a reprieve when a personal foul penalty wiped out his apparent game-clinching interception, threw a 40-yard pass to Jeff Lamont on the next play, setting up Tonly Thulin’s 4-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds remaining that gave Oak Harbor High a 26-22 Class 4A quarterfinal victory over previously-unbeaten Vancouver Skyview High. Lobbestael, committed to Washington State, threw touchdown passes of 18 yards to Lamont and 80 yards to Rodrick Rumble and ran 13 yards for another score. Micah Lape rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns, finishing with over 2,400 yards this season for the best Skyview team (11-1) in school history. West Virginia Unbeaten Parkersburg High (13-0) smashed two-time defending Class 3A state champion Morgantown High 42-14 to advance to the championship game. Leading 20-14 at halftime, Parkersburg dominated the second half with three scoring drives. Junior quarterback Dave Thomas, also a two-time state wrestling champion, scored on runs of 3 and 13 yards and also was 6-of-9 passing for 101 yards and two touchdowns – 42 yards to Charlie Taylor and 6 yards to Kyle Smith. Matt Lindamood (21 carries, 193 yards) also ran for two scores. Wisconsin Stratford High nearly blew a 12-point lead in the final two minutes of the game, but held on to beat Deerfield High 26-24 in the Division 6 final, becoming the first Wisconsin team to win four consecutive state football titles. Pinned deep in its own territory and leading 26-14, Stratford opted to take a safety rather than punt. Deerfield’s Jeremy Roach returned the ensuing free kick 64 yards for a touchdown and added a two-point conversion run to make it 26-24. But Jordan Bauman recovered an onside kick and Stratford ran out the clock. Stratford's Chris Olson ran for 82 yards and two touchdowns, one year after his older brother Matt ran for 293 yards and four touchdowns to win last year's title. Wyoming With Klinton Krieger (69-72-141) taking individual honors by one stroke, Cheyenne Central High shot 299 the second day, overtook first-day leader Cody High and romped to the Class 4A boys golf championship, shooting 601 for a 15-stroke victory. Also scoring for Cheyenne Central: Josh Creel (76-73-149), Derek Francois (76-75-151) and Cameron Ross (81-79-160). Sheridan High also came from behind to win the girls title, 546-549-511 over Casper Kelly Walsh High and Cody, respectively. Green River High’s Kelsey Podlesny blew away the field with an opening-round 75 and shot 159 for a 10-stroke victory. |
