Alabama

Prattville High quarterback Larry Smith was named the state’s Mr. Football winner after leading the Lions to a 35-21 victory over defending champion Hoover High in the Class 6A title game. The 6-foot-2 Smith, a Vanderbilt recruit, passed for 2,373 yards and 20 touchdowns with only two interceptions during Prattville’s 15-0 state title run. Smith, also named the 6A Back of the Year, was followed in the voting by quarterbacks Rob Ezell of Athens High, Ross Wilson of Hoover and Zach Smith of Blountsville Susan Moore High. Fifth in the voting: 1A Back of the Year Terrance Wilkes of Wadley High (9,668 career rushing yards, 160 touchdowns), who died in a drive-by shooting Nov. 25 during a pickup basketball game.

Alaska

Dillingham High repeated as Class 3-2-1A state wrestling champion, outscoring Anchorage Christian School for the second straight year, 178.5-155.5. Junior Wes Richards won his second consecutive 125-pound title and junior Joe Hunt (103) also won for Dillingham, which placed eight in the top five. Wrangell High senior Jon Garrison (130) was voted the Outstanding Wrestler after winning his second state crown with two pins, a major decision and an 8-7 victory over Anchorage Christian’s Mike Miller in the final. Junior Kevin Hansen (119) of Kotzebue High also won his second title.

Arizona

Visiting Gilbert High (8-3) used a full-court press, speed and offensive rebounding to hand Mesa Skyline High’s girls basketball team its first loss, 59-42. Crystal Marroquin scored 14 points to lead four Gilbert players in double figures. The Tigers’ press forced 34 Skyline turnovers – 21 in the first half – and used two Marroquin treys to pull away in the first quarter. Paige Traw and Justine Johnson scored 11 points each for Gilbert and Donielle Cooper added 10 points. Erinn Goodman scored 11 points and Ashleigh Schoonover added eight points for Skyline (11-1).

Arkansas

Rose Bud High (10-1) tuned up for its upcoming showdown against fellow Region 2-3A unbeaten Riverview High by pounding Barton High 88-38 as 6-foot-3 post player Zach Prothro dominated the game inside. Prothro played only the first half, scoring 23 points as the Ramblers scored 65 in the first two quarters. Rose Bud also posted lopsided wins over Pangburn High, 70-37 and Mount Vernon-Enola High, 76-32. Against Pangburn, the Ramblers drained seven consecutive three-pointers – three by Cory Pio – and were 14-of-25 from behind the arc. Riverview (11-4), behind 6-foot-3 Tony Hall, buried Brinkley High 63-23 in its region opener.

California

Visalia Golden West High's girls basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Central Valley Christian Christmas Classic, capping a 4-0 run through the Verhoeven Pool of the 10-team tournament with a 60-48 victory over host Central Valley Christian. The Trailblazers (9-3), which won just 12 total games the past two seasons, were led by Ellie Seeger’s 17 points. Makenda Hill scored 14 points, Chelsea Fugate scored 12 points and Allison Smith, whose basket 1:26 into the game gave Golden West the lead for good, added 10 points. Golden West’s finals opponent: Bakersfield Garces Memorial High (4-0 in the Woudstra Pool), which got 15 points from Sarah Allen in a 39-33 victory over Fresno Christian School.

Colorado

Trailing by two points at halftime in a showdown between unbeatens, Greenwood Village Cherry Creek High’s girls basketball team (5-0) swamped previously-unbeaten Grand Junction Central High in the second half, winning 53-35 to advance to the finals of the Littleton Heritage Holiday Hoopla. Rachel Roberson led the rally with 13 points and nine rebounds, Allison Scholbe scored 12 points and Taylor Brown added nine points and eight boards. Fort Collins High (2-3) also advanced to the final, beating host Heritage 59-46 in the other semifinal. Krystine Dalton scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the second quarter as the Lambkins breezed to a 37-21 halftime lead.

Connecticut

P.J. Holung scored a team-high 23 points and Rodney Mansfield added 17 as Bloomfield High (1-1) defeated Master's-Simsbury High 93-67 in the nightcap of opening-night action in the 32nd annual Doc Hurley Scholarship Classic at Hartford Weaver High. The victory was the 200th of Bloomfield coach Gary Barcher's career. Now in his seventh season at Bloomfield, Barcher previously coached at South Windsor High. Justin Turner added 14 points for Bloomfield, James Ferguson had eight rebounds and Hakeem Burgess seven assists. David Gibbs scored a game-high 28 points and Isaac Benjamin added 19 for Master's-Simsbury.

Delaware

Senior Stephanie Seitz, who led Wilmington Ursuline Academy to three state titles and a runner-up finish this year, was selected the state’s Player of the Year by the Delaware Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association. A National Honor Society member, Seitz takes three AP courses and two honors classes and plans to major in finance in college. Senior teammate Nora Jingeleski also was named to the First Team. Also on the squad: seniors Lisa Campbell of Wilmington Padua Academy and Franny Glick of Wilmington Tower Hill School, juniors Kate Grasso of The Charter School of Wilmington and Kristi Kerrigan of Wilmington Friends School and sophomore Alex Lyon of Claymont Archmere Academy.

Florida

After blowing a 21-point lead in the final two minutes of regulation, Lakeland High got a 20-yard field goal from Matt Roddenberry in the second overtime and defensive tackle John Brown made a game-saving stop inside the one-yard line to preserve a 45-42 victory over Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas High for its third consecutive Class 4A state title – all three over the Raiders – before over 12,000 fans at Dolphins Stadium in Miami. Chris Rainey rushed for 287 yards and three touchdowns for the Dreadnaughts. After recovering two onside kicks as part of their late rally, St. Thomas Aquinas took its only lead, 42-35, in the first overtime on Jeremiah Harden’s (178 yards) fourth touchdown run of the game.

Georgia

Nick Burks of Columbus Hardaway High, who didn’t advance to the state meet last year, pinned state champion DeVante Griffin of Columbus High in overtime in the 189-pound final to highlight the championship round of the 29th annual Hardaway Invitational. Columbus edged Hardaway 190-175.5 for third place in the 16-team event, each crowning three champions. Two-time state champion Dorian Henderson (171) won for Columbus. Ellijay Gilmer County High outscored Cartersville Cass High 224-211 for the title, reversing the order of last year’s state tournament. Each team had three champions. Two-time Cass state champion Justin Martin (119) was voted the Outstanding Wrestler.

Hawaii

The Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA) announced it will provide Hawaii high schools with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and the training to use them. After the life-saving devices are distributed to schools and training is completed, the units will be readily available for coaches and athletic trainers to use during Hawaii high school sporting events and practices. The donation is part of the HMSA Kaimana Awards & Scholarship Program, and will be administered by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association. AEDs can help restore a normal heart rhythm during a sudden cardiac arrest in situations where trained rescue and medical personnel are not readily available.

Idaho

With only two players returning from last year’s Class 5A state finalist, Boise Capital High's boys basketball team (4-3) recorded its fourth win in five games, 69-60 over Southern Idaho Conference rival Weippe Timberline High. Senior guard Troy Perry scored a career-high 16 points with 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range and 5-of 7 overall. Perry also had three assists and a steal to help Capital extend a 44-38 lead after three quarters to 67-56 late in the game. Timberline's Jake Gross led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-18 shooting, Brian Hamilton adding 11 points and Brock Hall 10.

Illinois

Three Illinois wrestlers won titles in the Ironman Invitational at Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit High. Lombard Montini High, which scored 141 points to place fourth in the 51-team field, got titles from senior three-time state champion Mike Benefiel (171) and junior Garrett Goebel (285), a two-time state placewinner. Benefiel, a Northwestern signee, beat Rob Waltko of Wexford (Pa.) North Allegheny High 10-7 for his title and Goebel blanked Lakewood St. Edward High’s Ben Kuhar 7-0. Carol Stream Glenbard North High (129 points) finished fifth and got a title from sophomore Tony Ramos (112), who nipped Blairstown (N.J.) Blair Academy freshman Chris Villalonga 3-2 in the final.

Indiana

Indianapolis Warren Central High (15-0) became the first team to win four consecutive state football titles, beating Carmel High 35-14 in the Class 5A final to capture a sixth overall crown. The Warriors piled up 315 rushing yards, with senior tailback Darren Evans, a Purdue recruit, carrying 30 times for 201 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 36, 20 and 1 yard as Warren Central scored 21 second-quarter points and led 28-14 at halftime. Brad Ellington (72 yards) and quarterback Matt Upshaw (32 yards rushing, 45 passing) each ran for a touchdown. Andrew Durbin threw two touchdown passes for Carmel (12-3), which got 75 rushing yards from Aaron King.

Iowa

Matt Hoch scored six of his eight points in the second half and ended a rally with a late steal as visiting Urbandale High (4-2) held off West Des Moines Dowling High 43-35. Ethan Freeman led Urbandale with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the J-Hawks closed the first half with a 12-0 run to take a 21-11 halftime lead. Dowling (4-2) shot just 23.8 per cent in the first half. But North Dakota recruit Pat Mitchell (game-high 17 points, 12 rebounds), who shot 8-of-13 from the field, helped Dowling cut a 13-point deficit to six with three minutes remaining before Hoch’s steal helped Urbandale close it out.


Kansas

Host Hutchinson High’s girls basketball team scored 11 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, then withstood a late charge for a 46-45 victory over Derby High in a battle of Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division 1 unbeatens. Morgan Leatherbury and Emile Blakesley each scored 13 points for Hutchinson (4-0), which erased a 26-18 halftime deficit with a 14-7 third quarter and used the fourth-quarter run to build a 46-39 lead with 25.9 seconds remaining. Joanna McFarland (21 points) hit a three-point play with 16.7 seconds remaining and Brooke Conley (18 points) drained a trey with 2.1 seconds left to bring Derby (4-1) within one point.

Kentucky

Tied at 41-41 with 6:14 remaining, Bowling Green Warren Central High (4-0) scored the next nine points and prevailed 60-53 over Louisville St. Francis de Sales High in the first round of the Canfield Development King of the Bluegrass Tournament. Monie Hudson, who had a game-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals, had four points and Nick Britt three during the run. Jeremy Anderson added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Dragons. DeSales built an 18-7 first-quarter lead thanks to four treys, but was scoreless from behind the arc the rest of the way. Aaron Tandy scored 13 points, Eric Wilkie added 11 points and Jeff Mullaney nine points and nine rebounds for DeSales.

Louisiana

Lafayette Acadiana High (13-2) became just the second school ever from Lafayette Parish to win a state football championship. Junior kicker Drew Alleman booted a 32-yard field goal with four seconds remaining as the Rams edged Sulphur High 13-10 for the Class 5A title. After a scoreless first half that saw the two teams punt on 12 of their 13 possessions, Sulphur built a 10-0 lead on back-to-back third-quarter scores. Kip Jacob, moved from receiver to quarterback, threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Javinas Faulk to narrow the gap to 10-7 with 10:47 remaining and drove the Rams to Alleman’s game-tying 42-yard field goal with just over three minutes to play.

Maine

Belfast High (150 points) won the 22nd annual McDonald's Invitational, sophomore state champions Josh Robbins (119) and Travis Spencer (189) claiming titles. Dixfield Dirigo High edged host Rumford Mountain Valley High by one-half point for second place, with eight-time defending Class A champion North Berwick Noble High (123) fourth. Robbins beat Noble state champion Jake Longley to win his title. Two-time state champion Jared Rideout (145) of Dover-Foxcroft Foxcroft Academy earned Outstanding Wrestler honors. Other state champions winning titles: Lisbon Falls Lisbon High’s Tyler Clark (125), Dirigo’s Jon Smith (140) and Kyle Miele (171) and Mountain Valley’s Tyler Child (215).

Maryland

Bel Air John Carroll School (8-1) got 25 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots from 6-foot-6 sophomore Isaiah Philmore to overcome a sluggish start and beat Baltimore Edmondson Westside High 74-63 at the Aberdeen Tip-Off Mixer. Philmore scored 10 points during a 14-0 run that helped John Carroll turn a three-point second-quarter deficit into a 40-29 third-quarter lead. Josh Selby scored 14 points, D’Metric Evans 11 points and Craig Ryan nine for John Carroll. Edmondson (1-4), nearly back at full strength after winning the Class 2A state football title, was led by Kareem Damon’s 16 points and Korawn Harris’ 14.


Massachusetts

Worcester Holy Name Central Catholic High (2-0) got 37 points, 13 rebounds and three assists from 6-foot-4 senior guard Mike Baldarelli to lead the Naps to a 81-71 victory over Charlestown High at the 11th annual IAABO Tip-Off Classic in Fitchburg. Holy Name trailed 42-41 at halftime, but used a 13-0 second-half run to pull ahead 58-50 after three quarters. Ryan Brown scored 22 points and Dominique Price (12 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists) nearly had a triple double. Ravon Dunbar led Charlestown (1-1) with 19 points, but had just five after picking up his fourth foul at the start of the second half.

Michigan

North Branch High (12-0-1) won its second girls volleyball tournament of the season with a 25-22, 25-22 sweep of Mount Clemens L'Anse Creuse High in the Goodrich Earlybird Tournament. The Broncos, who won the South Lyon Tournament the previous week, knocked off Imlay City High, 25-20, 25-13 in the semifinals and Oxford High, 25-20, 25-15 in the quarterfinals. Jessica Curtis had 49 kills and Rachel Hebberd added 31 kills, 12 digs and six blocks to lead the North Branch offense. Sam Fish had 83 assists, 23 kills, 13 aces, 27 digs and eight blocks and Olivia Kohler had 24 aces, 15 kills, 49 digs and 15 assists.

Minnesota

With fall sports now in the books, Rochester Lourdes High (Class A) and Stillwater High (Class AA) own narrow leads in the competition for the 2006-07 Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Challenge Cup. Lourdes has 175 points, leading Minneapolis Blake School (171), Mendota Heights Visitation Academy (158), Golden Valley Breck School (128), Adrian High (107) and Perham High (106). With 308 points, Stillwater leads defending champion Eden Prairie High (280). Established in 2003 and sponsored by Wells Fargo, the Challenge Cup is a statewide, year-long competition among MSHSL member schools.

Mississippi

Jaris Patrick, who guided Puckett High to a perfect 14-0 record and the Class 1A state football title, was named Metro Coach of the Year by the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, the state’s largest newspaper. Puckett, which beat Maben East Webster High 38-20 in the title game, is one of only five 1A programs with multiple state titles. Puckett, 60, a former Delta State University defensive lineman, spent 21 years working for Sears before returning to coaching with Puckett’s junior high program in 1993. His feeder program fueled Puckett’s 2002 state title team. He took over the high school program in 2004 and is 30-6 in three seasons.

Missouri

Cheryl Shores, who came out of retirement to lead Lockwood High to a 29-5-2 record and the Spring River Valley Conference championship, was named The Joplin Globe’s 2006 All-Area Coach of the Year. Shores first became Lockwood’s coach in 1980 and built a powerhouse, with 521 victories in her 26-year coaching career. She originally retired after leading Lockwood to the Class 1 state title in 2004, but returned this year to lead the Tigers to the state quarterfinals, losing 25-18, 25-19 to eventual state champion Winona High. Her teams also reached the state final in 2003 and the semifinals in 2000 and 2002.

Montana

Class A Havre High staked its claim as the state’s top wrestling team, beating defending AA champion Kalispell Flathead High 44-26 to take the Butte Mining City Duals for the second time in three years, then winning the Great Falls Charles M. Russell Tournament, 302-205 over the hosts. Two-time state champions Evan Hinebauch (189) and Matt Schnittgen (285) led five Havre champions, Schnittgen outlasting AA champion Trevor Hass of Butte High 8-6 in overtime. Other state champions winning: Billings Skyview High’s Brice Gretch (105), Conrad High’s Scott Schlosser (112), Cascade/Simms High’s Ryan Leonard (125), Bozeman High’s Ted Todd (160) and Helena High’s Ryan Fetherston (215).


Nebraska

Papillion-La Vista South High (4-3) used a 14-0 second-quarter run to turn a two-point deficit into a 26-14 lead and take command in a 49-41 victory over Omaha Harry A. Burke High in the first round of the Metro Conference girls holiday basketball tournament. Madie Haugland led the Titans with 16 points and Dani Suponchick added nine. Mia Gilreath led Burke with 15 points. South’s second-round opponent was top-seeded Bellevue West High, which shut out Omaha Northwest High 23-0 in the first quarter en route to a 74-11 victory. Kelsey Woodard scored 16 points for the Thunderbirds, Abby Henry and Brooke Delano 11 each and Ashley Lynch 10.

Nevada

Tournament MVP Mychal Martinez scored 28 points as Las Vegas Meadows School routed Las Vegas Del Sol High 93-56 in the championship game of the Pahrump Valley Times Trojans Cage Classic. Brandon Baccus added 24 points for the Mustangs, who outscored Del Sol 30-6 in the third quarter to stretch their lead to 79-40. Maurice Lawson led Del Sol with 16 points. Host Pahrump Valley High (13-0) turned back Boulder City High 49-35 to win the girls title as Michelle Dannenberger scored 18 points and Brittney Lindgren added 13. Senior point guard Dominique Maloy had nine points, eight assists and four steals and won her second tournament MVP in two weeks.

New Hampshire

Colin Merritt's overtime goal lifted Manchester Memorial High (2-0) to a 2-1 win over Exeter High. Merritt redirected Craig Charest's point shot over the left shoulder of Exeter goalie Brett Howell just 30 seconds into overtime. Charest intercepted a wayward Blue Hawks clearing pass and let loose a waist-high slap shot toward Merritt. Memorial, which needed seven games to record its second victory a year ago, got 21 saves from goaltender Matt Flynn. Kyle Charboneau’s power-play goal gave the Crusaders a 1-0 second-period lead, but Exeter (0-2) forced overtime when J.J. MacBride scored off a faceoff with 4:26 left in regulation.

New Jersey

Seneca High outscored the host school 242.5-176.5 to win the 11th annual Haddonfield Tournament on the first full weekend of the state’s wrestling season. Seneca ended the tournament with a flourish by going 6-for-6 in the finals, Vince Catalani (125), Bobby Conrad (140), Eric Levenseller (152), Bobby Carroll (160), Tim Connor (171) and Zach Schiewe (285) won titles for the Golden Eagles. Cape May Lower Cape May High, third with 155.5 points, also advanced six to the finals, with A.J. Fisher (112) earning Outstanding Wrestler honors.

New Mexico

Visiting Rio Rancho High ended defending state champion Albuquerque Manzano High’s 31-game winning streak, 63-60. Averaging nearly 78 points per game entering the contest, Rio Rancho was slowed down by Manzano’s defense, but still got a solid offensive performance from senior swingman Noah Wolfe, whose game-high 19 points included 11-of-13 from the free-throw line. Leading 25-23 late in the first half, Rio Rancho held Manzano scoreless on 10 consecutive possessions, forcing four turnovers over that span, to open up a 39-24 lead. Manzano closed the gap to six before Wolfe and his teammates went 7-of-10 from the line down the stretch.

New York

Three Clarence High wrestlers were unbeaten as the Red Devils won the Athol Springs St. Francis Red Raider Duals. Jon Denis (112), Josh Feiler (119) and Brian Cournan (152) each went 4-0 for Clarence. Although he wasn’t unbeaten, Chris Budzinski (145) turned in one of the team’s biggest victories, scoring a pin in the final bout of Clarence’s first-round match against St. Francis. The pin not only tied the match at 39-39, but gave Clarence the victory on criteria, 8-7 in victories. Clarence then won its final three matches to earn the title, 42-36 over Yorkshire Pioneer High. St. Francis 215-pounder Brendan Ring pinned all four opponents to earn Outstanding Wrestler honors.


North Carolina

Two of the state’s top private-school basketball teams traveled south to Georgia for their first meeting of the season. Charlotte Christian School shot 56 per cent from the field in the first half and went on to beat Arden Christ School 68-60 in the second round of the Garden City Classic at Augusta. The North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association will give Charlotte Christian the nod over its rival if the non-region contest is considered in state tournament seeding. The Knights were looking to go 3-0 in the tournament against South Carolina private-school power Charleston Porter-Gaud School.

North Dakota

Senior goaltender Abby Stauss virtually handed Fargo South High a victory over defending state girls hockey champion Bismarck High by herself, turning back all 37 shots as the Bruins (4-2) won 2-0 to snap a two-game losing streak. Stauss was third in the state in save percentage last year and fourth in goals against average. After Abby Callahan’s first-period goal gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead, Bismarck outshot South 16-3 in the second period and was the beneficiary of four consecutive Bruins penalties, but couldn’t get a shot past Stauss. Breanna Taralson scored on an assist from Savanna Sauvageau to make it 2-0 with six minutes remaining.

Ohio

Lakewood St. Edward High won the Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit Ironman Invitational for the first time in recent memory, outscoring Blairstown (N.J.) Blair Academy 260-237. Chris Honeycutt (189) was St. Edward’s only champion, winning upper-weight Outstanding Wrestler honors. But the Eagles placed eight wrestlers in the top three and 10 overall. Blair had six finalists and four champions: Kellen Russell (130), Max Shanaman (135), Mario Mason (140) and Eric Medina (152). St. Paris Graham High, which also advanced three to the finals, finished third with 174 points. State champion David Taylor (103) was Graham’s lone champion.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma City Millwood High quarterback Gerald Jones, who rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns to lead his team past Vian High 21-20 in the Class 2A state title game, was named All-State and Little All-City Offensive Player of the Year by The Daily Oklahoman. The Tennessee recruit rushed and passed for more than 1,500 yards each. Enid High free safety/quarterback Austin Box was named All-State Defensive Player of the Year despite playing offense only for several weeks after dislocating his elbow against Tulsa Union High on Sept. 22. In the playoffs, the Oklahoma recruit had a pair of interceptions in the closing minutes to seal Enid's Class 6A semifinal victory over Owasso High.

Oregon

Jake Keyser had a hand in all of his team’s goals, scoring a hat trick and adding three assists as Central Point Crater High (3-3) pulled away from South Medford High 6-2 in Southern Oregon League play. Keyser assisted on Michael Drew’s goal and scored the next three goals himself, adding an unassisted tally that gave Crater a 2-1 first-period lead. His second-period goal on an assist from Tate Stevens made it 3-1 and Drew set him up for the hat trick in the third period. Keyser then set up Alex Hageman and Josh Keith for the Comets’ final goals. Branson Holm had a goal and an assist and Lane Littlefield also scored for South Medford (1-4).

Pennsylvania

Patton Cambria Heights High’s Amber Dubyak passed the 1,000-point mark last season. In the second quarter of a 48-47 victory over Ebensburg Central Cambria High, Dubyak grabbed her 1,000th career rebound. In all, the 5-foot-9 Dubyak pulled down 19 rebounds to go along with a game-high 25 points, nine coming in a 15-4 Lady Highlanders run to close the third quarter for a 46-37 lead. Central Cambria scored 10 of the game’s final 12 points, Dubyak making 1-of-2 free throws to help Cambria Heights put the game away. Kristie Malloy added eight points and Jerica Snedden 16 rebounds for Cambria Heights. Amber Letterner led Central Cambria with 14 points.

Rhode Island

Nick Mascio scored 24 of his 28 points in the second half and rallied host North Providence High, which had trailed by three points at halftime, to a 75-64 victory over Woonsocket High in the North Providence Hoopfest. Nick Abernathy chipped in with 21 points for the Cougars, while Mike Akinrola led the Villa Novans with 18 points. North Providence played Providence La Salle High in the winners bracket round and Woonsocket faced East Greenwich High in the consolation round of the tournament. Evan Kearns had a game-high 22 points as La Salle defeated East Greenwich, 58-39.

South Carolina

Hindered by an offense that committed six turnovers, South Carolina fell 23-18 to North Carolina in the 70th annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas football game at Spartanburg. Cheraw High’s Cliff Matthews, the team’s defensive MVP, had four tackles and two sacks, recovered a fumble to set up a field goal and forced a fumble in the third quarter that linebacker Stanley Hunter of Duncan James F. Byrnes High returned 66 yards for a touchdown. Greenville High quarterback Matt Lentz, a Kentucky recruit, threw touchdown passes of 36 yards to Andrew Lanier of Roebuck Dorman High and 39 yards to offensive MVP Markish Jones of Spartanburg Gettys D, Broome High.

South Dakota

Milbank High (3-0) scored 16 consecutive points in the second half to rally past Aberdeen Roncalli High (1-1) 68-59 in a battle of Northeast Conference boys basketball unbeatens. The Bulldogs trailed by 10 points in the first quarter and eight in the third before Lance Frogner led the comeback, scoring eight points of his 16 points in the pivotal surge. Roncalli didn’t get closer than seven points the rest of the way. Cory Lesnar led Milbank with 18 points and Jeff Fish added 15 points and seven rebounds. Nick Ochsner topped Roncalli with 18 points, Rob Carlson adding 17 and Dan O'Keefe 11.

Tennessee

Three Knoxville-area schools rolled to repeat state football titles. Alcoa High (13-2) blew out Madison Goodpasture Christian School 35-3 in Class 2A as Chris Shiverdecker rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns and West Virginia recruit Kyrus Lanxter caught six passes for 173 yards and two scores. Tennessee recruit Dennis Rogan ran for 213 yards and scored twice to power Knoxville Fulton High (14-1) past Nashville David Lipscomb High 24-14 in Class 3A and Maryville High (15-0) extended its winning streak to 45 in Class 4A, 35-10 over Nashville Hillsboro High as Tyler Maples, also headed for Tennessee, had six catches for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

Texas

McKinney Boyd High (9-4) won its third straight game after losing three in a row, 74-63 over Class 5A Garland High to finish its non-district boys basketball schedule. Boyd scored 21 first-quarter points, but Garland rallied in the second quarter, trailing just 40-38 at halftime. Trailing by five after three quarters, Garland (4-7) mounted a comeback as Cedrick Clark scored eight of his game-high 24 points, but Boyd eventually pulled away for the win. Jeff Fuller led Boyd with 22 points, with Darius Coleman adding 19 points, Jordan McKinney 13 and Luke Tarazewich 11.

Utah

South Jordan Bingham High's Jordan Pendleton (5A), Provo Timpview High's Devin Mausia (4A), Garland Bear River High's Garland Munns (3A), Blanding San Juan High's Marley Haws (2A) and Duchesne High's Weston Despain (1A) were named football MVPs by the Salt Lake Tribune. BYU-bound Pendleton became his school’s first Division 1 recruit, catching 11 touchdown passes. Mausia, a linebacker, had 90 tackles, 12 sacks and returned an interception for a touchdown. Munns had 58 solo tackles and rushed for 1,139 yards and 12 touchdowns. Haws rushed for 815 yards and 11 touchdowns and had 18 sacks as a defensive end. Despain rushed for 1,220 yards and 14 touchdowns and had 131 tackles.

Vermont

Manchester Burr and Burton Academy (2-1) broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter and pulled away from Arlington High for a 50-37 victory. Senior guard Dylan Baker led the Bulldogs, scoring 18 points, including four treys, as Burr and Burton bolted out of the gate to a 13-2 lead. Manchester still trailed by 11 at halftime before senior Matt Walsh, who finished with 12 points, keyed a rally that cut the deficit to four points after three quarters. Center Frank Zuniga added nine points for the Eagles and junior George Stroffoleno scored eight. But a Baker trey keyed a 10-2 Bulldogs run at the start of the fourth quarter. Zach Cowan added 16 points and Doug Anton 10.

Virginia

Wesley Simmons piled up 19 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks to lead visiting Richmond Hermitage High (2-4) to a 68-56 Colonial District upset of previously-unbeaten Richmond John Marshall High. Alonzo Tweedy (18 points, 14 rebounds) also recorded a double-double for the Panthers, who trailed only once in the game – when the score was 3-2. Hermitage pulled away to a 15-7 lead after one quarter and was never threatened. Travis McKie scored 19 points for John Marshall (5-1) and Jermaine Scruggs added 16, including four treys.

Washington

Kayla Campbell, a 5-foot-5 sophomore guard, tallied a triple-double to spark the Mabton High girls basketball team (3-2) to a 52-46 overtime victory over Moses Lake Christian School. Campbell scored eight of her 10 points – two treys and a pair of free throws – in the final two minutes of regulation to erase a late five-point deficit and force overtime. She also had 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Fellow sophomore guard Ana Jimenez took over in overtime, scoring six of her game-high 16 points. Trishi Williams, also a sophomore, added 14 points for Mabton.

West Virginia

Fairmont Senior High senior quarterback Kyle Allard was named offensive captain of the Class 3A All-State Team by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. Allard (192-of-359 passing, 2,806 yards, 33 touchdowns) led Fairmont Senior to its first state semifinal berth since 1992. Martinsburg High senior cornerback Xavier Peters (12 interceptions) was named defensive captain. State champion Parkersburg High had five players selected – tying its own state record – for the fifth time since 1998: seniors Josh Jenkins (offensive line), a West Virginia recruit, and Charlie Taylor (offensive athlete) and juniors Matt Littleton (linebacker), Matt Lindamood (defensive athlete) and Tyler Warner (placekicker).

Wisconsin

Hurley High’s girls basketball team stayed unbeaten by winning a game of runs, 70-59 over Washburn High. Ahead 15-10 after one period, Hurley (7-0) opened up a 15-point lead in the second period. The Castle Guards (3-2) cut the gap to 10 at halftime, but the Midgettes opened up a 60-39 third-quarter lead and were never threatened after that. Jaclyn Aijala hit three 3-pointers and had 25 points for Hurley, Kathleen Meade adding 16 points and Terressa Leinon 10. Jenna Anderson had 11 of her game-high 30 points in the fourth quarter for Washburn. Maddie Siroin added 12 points and seven rebounds and Casey Gasperini dished out five assists.

Wyoming

Cody High’s boys basketball team rebounded from an opening-round 58-53 loss to Worden (Mont.) Huntley Project High to nip host Laurel (Mont.) High 55-54 at the Laurel Invitational. Adam Waddell had 20 points and 11 rebounds against Huntley Project, a game that was tied after three quarters, and Justin Westerhold added 12 points. After trailing most of the game against Laurel, the Broncs took a five-point fourth-quarter lead, lost it, then scored the winning basket with 22 seconds remaining. Waddell had 28 points, Zach Paris seven and Westerhold and Matt Clark six each.
