Tonya Conley’s second-half goal helped Burlington High (4-0-3) get past St. Albans Bellows Falls Academy 1-0. Lindsay Kingston scored in the first half to give Himesburg Champlain Valley High (4-0-4) a 1-0 lead, but South Burlington High’s Mimi Eckenstein converted a penalty kick in the second half to salvage a 1-1 tie. Virginia Thanks to a back-nine 37, Norfolk Norview High junior Matt Leon carded a 37 on the back nine for a second-round 79 to tie Norfolk Lake Taylor High’s Chris Jenkins and Portsmouth Churchland High’s John Stanek with two-day totals of 162 in the Eastern District golf tournament. Leon then won the ensuing playoff with a par 5 on the first extra hole. Churchland placed Stanek (162), Omar McDonald and Ryan Phelps (170) and Trey Phelps (171) in the top 10 individually to take the team title. Second-place Norfolk Maury High, led by John Garrett’s 163, and third-place Norfolk Granby High, led by Pat Callahan’s 166, also advanced to next week's Eastern Region tournament in Virginia Beach. Washington Host Puyallup High (4-0) won a South Puget Sound League South shootout, 44-31 over Spanaway Bethel High in a battle of unbeatens. Quarterback Alex Elliott backed up his team’s 243-yard rushing attack by competing 11 of 24 passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns, including a 31-yard scoring strike to Justin Veltung. James Shafer ran for a pair of Puyallup touchdowns and Elliott finished the game on a hot streak after missing on his first nine passes. Bethel quarterback Oliver Henry (20-of-30, 235 yards) threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Robert Akeo-Orr (eight receptions, 136 yards) and ran for another score, and Jeremy Betschart added a pair of touchdown runs. West Virginia Winfield High didn’t get a win against Charleston Sissonville High, but the Generals (12-0-3) still clinched the Cardinal Conference girls soccer championship with a 1-1 tie. Senior forward Leann McKay’s goal late in the second half helped the Generals, No. 3 in the state coaches association rankings, forge the deadlock. Winfield outshot the No. 9 Indians (10-3-1) 12-3, but it was Sissonville that grabbed a 1-0 lead when forward Katie Harper converted a rebound of Autumn Martin’s shot just 1 minute, 33 seconds into the second half. Winfield couldn’t convert on several late opportunities, but Lexie Puterbaugh finally set up McKay’s tying goal. Wisconsin Wales Kettle Moraine High junior Jackie Shepherd missed her first eight fairways, but scrambled to a 5-over-par 77, good enough to win the Salem Westosha Central Regional girls golf tournament. Waukesha Catholic Memorial High's Marion Acosta (81) finished second. With Shepherd leading the way, Kettle Moraine, ranked No. 7 by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, shot 339 and leapfrogged No. 5 Waukesha High (350) and No. 6 Catholic Memorial (359). Mukwonago High edged Waterford High by two strokes, 408-410, for the fourth and final state qualifying spot when its final golfer on the course, Allison Scheidegger, saved the day with a 96. Wyoming The Wyoming High School Activities Association is determining whether to pursue holding the state football championship games at a neutral site. Currently, the higher seed hosts all playoff games, including the state championship, using a state-administered power-point system. Laramie, Casper and Riverton, all sites with artificial turf surfaces, have been mentioned as possible sites. Also under consideration is a proposal to scrap the power-point system in favor of conference standings for playoff seeding. Casper is currently the host for state championships in volleyball, boys and girls basketball, wrestling and track. Casper was awarded those events through the 2011 school year. |
