Alabama

After having to forfeit four victories for using an ineligible transfer, Hoover High (3-5) picked up two interceptions in the final five minutes to hold off Birmingham Oak Mountain High 21-18, clinching the fourth seed in the Region 6-6A playoffs. Jemeriz Owens (18 carries, 117 yards) scored on an 80-yard run for Hoover and quarterback Tyler Ray (8-of-16, 132 yards) threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Harris as Hoover built a 21-10 lead. Oak Mountain quarterback Drew McKnight completed 14 of 26 passes for 221 yards and ran for both of his team’s touchdowns. His 4-yard scoring run and two-point conversion pass to Ross Ware made it 21-18 before Hoover stiffened.

 

Alaska

Juneau Douglas High completed a perfect 11-0 season – the first unbeaten season in school history – by beating Palmer High 23-13 in the First National Bowl state championship game. Quarterback Bubba Larson, a senior who stars on the Crimson Bears basketball team but played football for the first time this season, threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Alex Fagerstrom in the second quarter to give Juneau Douglas, which also beat Palmer in the 2005 state final, a 21-0 cushion. Zach Heppner starred on defense, scoring a safety with a sack in the end zone and blocking a punt to set up a touchdown as the Crimson Bears held Palmer, averaging 268 rushing yards per game, to just 113.

 

Arizona

Emily White, Alejandra Hernandez, Ashton Hobbs and Myriah Frabasilio won the meet’s final evnet, the 400-meter relay, to give Yuma High a four-point win over Phoenix North High in the Class 5A Gila Valley and Metro 2 Region tournament. Frabasilio also won the 200 and 500 freestyle and was named the region’s female swimmer of the year, and teammate Emily White won the 200 individual medley as Yuma won for the second consecutive year. Yuma Cibola High won the boys title as swimmer of the year Tyler Bhirdo won the 200 and 500 freestyle and anchored the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

 

Arkansas

Visiting Gravette High (7-2) scored on its first four possessions and clinched a share of the Region 1-4A Conference championship, its first in five years, 55-0 over Berryville High. Junior quarterback Ethan McKinzie (10-of-12, 129 yards) threw touchdown passes of 6 and 21 yards to Travis Eden and 20 yards Frankie Walburn in the first half. Teddy Selby (11 carries, 71 yards) scored on a 4-yard run and Michael Croasdell returned an interception 60 yards – one of three Gravette interception returns for touchdowns – to  give the Lions a 35-0 halftime lead. Colton Moorman added a 23-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

 

California

Gilroy High (6-2, 4-0) scored one of its biggest victories ever, beating four-time defending Tri-County Athletic League champion Palma High, 35-14, to close in on its first league title since 1985. Junior quarterback Jamie Jensen, who leads the Central Coast Section in passing, completed 18 of 31 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yard touchdown pass to Danny Contreras, and Dante Fullard ran for two scores as the Mustangs beat Palma (6-2, 3-1) for the first time in school history. Palma quarterback David Fales completed 25 of 35 for 196 yards, but was sacked five times. Gilroy, which hadn’t posted a league record over .500 in six years, piled up 377 total yards.

 

Colorado

Arvada Pomona High senior Zahkai Brown carded back-to-back even-par rounds of 72 to record a two-stroke victory over Boulder Fairview High's Brennan Dolan and Littleton Chatfield High's Robert Quick, taking the Class 5A boys golf title. Rounding out the top five: Castle Rock DouglasCounty High’s Cory Kent (147) and Littleton Dakota Ridge High's Nick Allen, Colorado Springs U.S. Air Academy's Kory Harrell and Brighton Horizon High's Chris Keirns (149). Greenwood Village Cherry Creek High's Brian Dorfman, who shot 69 to take the first-day lead, struggled to a second-day 85 for a 154 total. Dolan's second-place tie helped Fairview capture the team championship by two shots over Douglas County.

 

Connecticut

Molly Alfieri's rebound goal with 1:53 remaining in the second overtime helped No. 9 Southington High (11-1, 5-1) take control of the Central Connecticut Conference North girls soccer standings with a 1-0 victory over Simsbury High. The Blue Knights avenged a 2-1 loss Sept. 20 to the Trojans (6-3-3, 4-2), which has won the division twice in the last three years. Alfieri’s goal, her 10th of the season, came off a cross from Shauna Edwards, Southington’s leading scorer with 12 goals, and got past Simsbury goalkeeper Jill Kelley, who sparkled in goal with 18 saves, many of them spectacular.


Delaware

Austin Hill scored a pair of goals to help Wilmington Concord High overcome slippery conditions to beat Wilmington Thomas McKean High 2-0. The Raiders (9-3-3, 6-0) clinched the Blue Hen Conference Flight B boys soccer championship with the win, the first title for Concord coach Scott Smith. Hill scored in the second minute off a throw-in by Jeff Finkle for as 1-0 lead. The Raiders dominated play and finally capitalized when the 6-foot-4 Hill added his second goal in the game's 29th minute. After Hill's second goal, the Raiders didn’t allow Thomas McKean (6-6-1, 4-2) any scoring chances.

 

Florida

A week before the district tournament, Niceville High senior Loring Ross and Crestview High sophomore Lauren Day won the boys and girls titles in the the Okaloosa County Championships, leading their respective teams to team titles. Led by Ross (16:15), the Eagles placed their other four runners in the top 10 to finish with a team total of 23 points. Tom Reho finished second, Dylan Schroeder fourth, Christian Ritacco sixth and Michael Cooper 10th. Day’s time of 19:34 gave her a 36-second victory. Lauren Eschbach finished third and four Eagles placed in the top 10 as Crestview topped Fort Walton Beach High, 42-55 for the girls’ title.


Georgia

Lenny Brooks ran for 127 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown run, and Chris Boggs had two interceptions in the final two minutes to help Hoschton Mill Creek High (6-3) upset No. 8 Suwanee Peachtree Ridge High 17-10, clinching the school’s first playoff berth in just its fourth season of existence. Quarterback Zach Landis, Gwinnett County's second-leading passer with 1,264 yards and 10 touchdowns, threw for 88 yards and an 8-yard touchdown pass to Ed Russ. Peachtree Ridge (5-3) scored on Greg Johnson's 29-yard field goal and Brandon Davis' 18-yard scoring run. Baxter Smith gave the Hawks their final margin with a 39-yard field goal.

 

Hawaii

Wahiawa Leilehua High successfully defended its boys and girls team titles, and last year's individual winners repeated at yesterday's O'ahu Interscholastic Association cross country championships.

Leilehua junior Bryce Jenkins, last year's OIA and state champion, led the entire boys race and won in 16:14.49. He was one of five Mules who finished in the top 10 as Leilehua won its third straight team title with 26 points. Honolulu Radford High was second with 117. Mililani sophomore Kristin Ali Keith led from start to finish in defending her title in 19:58. Leilehua placed five girls in the top 11 to win its second straight team title with 36 points. Mililani High was second with 67.

 

Idaho

Boise Bishop Kelly High’s girls cross country team won its fifth Class 4A title in a row and Boise High took the its third consecutive Class 5A girls title. Bishop Kelly survived a scare from Preston High, winning 38-40 as junior Codi Gifford, out for the sport for the first time, finished fourth. Her twin sisters, freshmen Payton and Bronte, finished seventh and 11th, respectively. Sandpoint High's Megan Bartlett won in 18:29.9. In 5A, Boise’s top three runners cracked the top 10 en route as they raced past Eagle High 59-97. The individual title went to Coeur d'Alene High freshman Kinsey Gomez (17:56.23).

 

Illinois

After three games and eight overtimes in a span of two days, Waterloo Gibault High took its third consecutive Class A boys soccer title. Andrew Phillips made the winning penalty kick for a 3-2 win in the state championship contest after the second four-overtime game of the weekend for both Gibault and runner-up Winnebago High. Tournament MVP Justin Billmeyer had five goals in three state tournament games for Gibault. The eight teams in the state tournament played a combined 14 overtimes and two shootouts in the eight games. Billmeyer scored two unassisted goals in a 4-0 semifinal win over Rochester High.

 

Indiana

Culver Academies senior Alex Banfich (18:21.8) won the first-ever girls 5,000-meter cross country state title. Banfich, who won by over 16 seconds, became just the third girl to win three state titles and the second to win three straight. Westfield High outdistanced St. John Lake Central High 81-114 for the top spot, their fourth state title. LaPorte High senior Mike Fout (15:31.9), the state 3,200-meter track champion last spring, became the first state champion from his school in 53 years, winning the boys title by nearly 25 seconds. Fishers High edged LaPorte 102-112 to win the team title, the smallest margin of victory since 1995.

 

Iowa

In winning Class 4A for the second time, West Des Moines Dowling sophomore Katie Flood smashed the state 4,000-meter girls cross country record. Her Class 4A winning time of 13:27 smashed the previous all-class state record by 37 seconds and gave her a 33-second victory. Dowling also won the team title. In Class A, senior Blaire Dinsdale of Traer North Tama High dethroned her twin sister, Brooke, who was the two-time defending state champion. Brooke was trying to become the fourth Iowa girl to win three state crowns. Also winning titles: Danielle Nowasell of Grinnell High (3A) and Steph Wibben of Rock Rapids Central Lyon/George-Little Rock High (2A).


Kansas

Looking for its first victory in six tries against its cross-town rival, Andover High (5-4) couldn’t hold a 10-7 first-half lead and lost 28-17 to Andover Central High to see its hopes for a Class 4A playoff end. Quarterback Spencer Glenn’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Tyson Hilyard just before halftime gave District 11-4A champion Central (8-1) a 14-10 lead they never relinquished. Keaton LaBanca rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns for Central, including a 32-yard score in the third quarter. Andover built its early lead on Nathan Jiwanlal’s 90-yard blocked field goal return and John Millsap’s 43-yard field goal.

 

Kentucky

Louisville Assumption High (39-3), ranked No. 5 nationally, got 12 kills from Kaitlynn James, a Nebraska commitment and one of six players committed to Division 1 college programs,  and beat Park Hills Notre Dame Academy 25-17, 25-13 for its fourth straight state title, its 12th in the past 13 years and 14th in the past 16. Assumption’s Sloane Donhoff, committed to Michigan, was voted the Tournament MVP and was joined by teammates James, Stephanie Riley and Maci Wachtel on the All-Tournament Team. Notre Dame (24-10) was represented by Nicole Staverman, Kristen Thomas and Jaimie Wulfeck.

 

Louisiana

The state’s top-ranked team, West Monroe High, showed why in a 49-7 District 1-5A win over Natchitoches Central High. The Rebels (8-0, 7-0) racked up 228 offensive yards in the first half as they built a 43-0 halftime lead. West Monroe quarterback Shelby Aulds threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Don Brown on the Rebels’ first play from scrimmage and the rout was on. Brown rushed for 93 yards on just five carries and added a second touchdown on a 1-yard run. Jordan Pleasant’s 10-yard TD run, Caleb Clowers' 21-yard fumble return and Jonas Tyson’s 55-yard punt return added to the first-half outburst.

 

Maine

Liz Cheesman scored two goals, both on assists from senior classmate Vicki Nadeau, as Winslow High (17-1) earned its fourth consecutive Eastern Maine Class B girls soccer title with a 4-1 victory Monday over Bangor John Bapst Memorial High. Jordyn Mallett and Katie Caron also scored in the second half. In the Eastern Maine Class C semifinals, Heidi Sappier scored the game’s only goal midway through the second half and visiting Lee Academy (17-0) recorded its 10th straight shutout as the Pandas stunned top-ranked Blue Hill George Stevens Academy 1-0.

 

Maryland

Clarksville River Hill High swept the Howard County boys and girls soccer titles. Junior Moni Sallam headed home a cross from junior Mike Doyle with 9:03 left in the first half, and the host Hawks (11-4) beat Columbia Oakland Mills High 1-0. The victory was River Hill’s 10th straight county win, allowing just six goals during that span. Junior Brittany Yancey scored three goals, but it was senior Erica Suter’s goal with five minutes remaining in regulation that was the difference as the Hawks (13-1-1) edged Ellicott City Centennial High 4-3. Senior Alyssa Vorce scored three goals in a 12-minute span as Centennial rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to take a 3-2 lead.


Massachusetts

Westwood Xaverian Brothers High senior Joe Young made his first trip to the Division 1 state boys golf tournament memorable. Only fourth in the South sectional, Young, who missed qualifying for state by one stroke as a sophomore and a junior, shot 1-over-par 74 to hold off Groton Barnstable High's Jared Pane (75) and Shrewsbury St. John’s High’s Taylor Fontaine (76), with defending champion Ricky Stimets of Holden Wachusett High shooting 81. St. John's took the team title, shooting 309 to beat Barnstable by four strokes. Fontaine, Matthew Creamer (77) and Connor Wentzell and Donald Adams (78) all broke 80 as St. John’s won its fifth state title and first since 1986.

 

Michigan

By rushing for 225 yards in a season-ending playoff loss, 34-30 to Flint Beecher High, Hamady High senior running back Antoine Smith-Guise became just the second player in Genesee County history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. Smith-Guise, who is being recruited by some Big Ten schools, finished the season with 2,077 yards and 27 touchdowns. In shattered the school record of 1,590 yards set by John McLaurin in 1982, Smith-Gause rushed for more than 100 yards in all but one game, including a best of 367 yards against Flint Northwestern High. The first Genesee County player to 2,000: Goodrich High’s Kirk Elsworth, who rushed for 2,867 yards in 2004, the second-best total in state history.

 

Minnesota

Lakeville South High (19-2) and Edina High (18-1-2) advanced to the Class AA girls soccer state title game. Senior forward Krista Lundgren scored on an assist from fellow senior Kelsey Bertamus midway through the first half and senior goalkepper Lindi Steffan made four saves as Lakeville South blanked Robbinsdale Armstrong High 1-0 in semifinal play. Senior midfielder Emily Frankenfield’s unassisted goal late in the second half gave Edina a 2-1 victory over Woodbury High. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime on goals by Edina sophomore forward Julie Sierks and Woodbury sophomore forward Alyssa DuVal.

 

Mississippi

Madison Central High swimmer Timothy Dasinger and Itawamba High quarterback Bret Jefcoat were named the Boys Athletes of the Week by the Jackson Clarion-Ledger. Dasinger won the 200 freestyle state title in 1:43.85 seconds, breaking the MHSAA state meet record he set last year, and also won the 500 freestyle in 4:50.35. The junior has won every meet in his high school career. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Jefcoat, a Louisiana Tech recruit, rushed for three touchdowns and a two-point conversion, was 5-of-10 passing for 121 yards, kicked three extra points and dropped two punts inside the 20 in a 29-28 win over previously-unbeaten Shannon High.

 

Missouri

Springfield Catholic High swept the Class 2, District 6 boys and girls cross country team titles. The Irish boys team won their third straight district crown, edging Washburn Southwest High, 42-48. Bryant Donelson finished second and Will Hawes fifth to lead four runners in the top 15. Junior Tyler Compton of Buffalo ran 17:09 to win the race by 13 seconds, evening his season record against Donelson at 2-2. Five Catholic girls placed in the top 15, led by Kelli Sullivan’s third-place finish, as the girls team won 24-31 over Hollister High. Hollister’s Brie Daniels (21:41) won the race.

 

Montana

Senior striker Katie Rodriguez scored the winning goal on a penalty kick with four minutes as Bozeman High (13-1) won its second straight Class AA girls soccer state title, 2-1 over Billings Senior High. But despite a roster that included 13 seniors, three All-State players and 2006 Gatorade Player of the Year Kirsten Tilleman, the Hawks didn’t have it easy against a Senior squad that handed them their only loss this season. Jenna Hjalmarsson's direct kick in the 31st minute of the first half gave Bozeman a 1-0 lead. Senior (12-4), playing in its first state final, scored midway through the second half when Jaucelyn Richter set up Laura Decker’s goal, making it 1-1.

 

Nebraska

After falling behind 7-0, Omaha Millard West (9-1) scored on four consecutive possessions to beat Omaha William Jennings Bryan High 62-25 in the first round of the Class A football playoffs. Jake Drwal (four receptions, 76 yards) scored three touchdowns, two on pass receptions from Jesse VerVelde and one on a 55-yard punt return. VerVelde also rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown and passed for 156 yards and three scores. Tyler Davis had 116 yards and two touchdowns. Bryan senior Jeremy Wallace (23 carries, 165 yards) scored on a 70-yard run and threw touchdown passes of 65 and 35 yards to Nick Foreman (five receptions, 209 yards).

 

Nevada

Las Vegas Centennial High senior Alex Borcherts sank a 12-foot putt for par on the second playoff hole to beat Las Vegas Coronado High's Bethany Glassford and win the Class 4A girls state golf title. Both golfers posted 36-hole totals of 160, with Borcherts making up a three-stroke deficit with a second-day 78. In the team race, Las Vegas Silverado High had three players shoot 83 or better as they made up a six-stroke deficit, shooting 920 for a 15-stroke victory over Minden Douglas High. Stephanie Whatley (78), Tameka Demps (80) and Brittany Rizzetto (83) led Silverado’s charge.

 

New Hampshire

Top-ranked Amherst Souhegan High (18-0) advanced to the Class I field hockey state final. Danielle Pelletier scored twice and JoJo Curro had two assists, extending her single-season school record to 36 as the Sabers eliminated Plymouth High, 4-1. Mollie Raymond and Brittany Pascoe also scored for Souhegan. They’ll face No. 11 Portsmouth High (11-6), which continued its upset run with a 4-3 victory over Conway Kennett High, the Clippers’ fourth tournament win over a higher-seeded opponent. Junior forward Mary Quill tallied a hat trick, including the game-winner with 9:40 remaining in double overtime. Cassaundra DelValle also scored for Portsmouth, Erica Agrognia adding two assists and Alycia Cresta one.

 

New Jersey

The top seeds survived in the Central Jersey Group 3 girls field hockey state series. Jessica Fritz scored her 42nd goal of the season on a breakaway with 15:44 remaining and goalkeeper Katelyn Pepper collected her 15th shutout of the season as top-seeded Bayville Central High (18-2) blanked Neptune High 1-0. Wall Township High's Elise Bastardo scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 43rd minute, as the third-seeded Crimson Knights rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 3-2 victory over Columbus Northern Burlington High.

 

New Mexico

Albuquerque Manzano High senior quarterback Matt Dalzell threw five touchdown passes, each to a different receiver, ran for a score and amassed 295 total yards as the Monarchs (7-1, 2-0) stayed atop District 5-5A with a 55-7 romp at Los Lunas High. Dalzell was 11-of-14 passing for 238 yards. Richie Baldwin had three receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown as Manzano outgained Los Lunas 471-228.

Ray Contreras’ 49-yard touchdown pass to Marc Rodriguez gave Los Lunas (4-4, 1-1) a 7-0 lead before the Monarchs responded with 55 unanswered points.

 

New York

Penalized a man in the first overtime, Niskayuna High senior forward Jake Johnson took a feed from Sean Fishel, beat two defenders and scored the game-winning goal with 1:20 remaining in the fourth overtime to propel the Silver Warriors to a 3-2 victory over Guilderland High in the Section II Class AA quarterfinals. Johnson's second goal of the game advanced Niskayuna (10-5-2) into the semifinals against Albany High (11-5-1). Sophomore Owen Daniels kicked the game-winner as Albany upset Colonie Central High in a 7-6 penalty den-death shootout after the two teams battled to a scoreless tie through regulation and four overtime periods.

North Carolina

Raleigh Wakefield High’s Courtney McKim rallied with a two-under-par 71 to take medalist honors in the Class 4A girls golf tournament. McKim’s final total of 149 gave her a five-shot victory over Apex Middle Creek High’s Courtney Rousse, Gastonia Ashbrook High’s Courtney Taylor and Asheville A.C. Reynolds High’s Stephanie Wagstaff. Junior Courtney Gunter of Indian Trail Porter Ridge High repeated as Class 1-2-3A individual champion, also shooting a final-round 71 for a 36-hole total of 145. Runnerup Laura Kinsman of Cameron Union Pines High finished 11 strokes back, but led her team to the team crown.

 

North Dakota

After looking rusty early in the match due to a quarterfinal-round bye, top-seeded New England High rallied to beat fifth-seeded Hettinger High in three straight games, 26-24, 25-14, 25-18, in the District 13 semifinals. A 7-0 run gave Hettinger a 19-13 lead in the first game before New England rallied to take charge of the match. Senior Dana Kuhn led the Tigers with 10 kills and junior Shari Hewson added five kills and three blocks. Third-seeded Bowman County High also advanced to the title match, 26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 26-24 over Heart River High as Allison Hanson piled up 22 kills, five digs and four blocks, Lindsey Tivis added five aces and setter Stephanie Lockert recorded 45 assists.

 

Ohio

Dublin Coffman High junior Kate Turvy won her second consecutive Division 1 girls tennis singles title, 6-0, 7-5 over Richfield Revere High senior Stephanie Danesis. Turvy, who won the crown last year while attending Dublin Jerome High, dropped just seven games in her final two matches. Danesis, the Division 2 state runnerup as a junior, played on the Division 2 state championship doubles team as a sophomore. in 2005. Jerome senior Jessica Easdale and freshman Kathryn Farrar took home the doubles title with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Dayton Chaminade-Julienne High junior Katie Pleiman and sophomore Nicci Dresden.

 

Oklahoma

Senior Sara Vaughn of Tulsa Union High and junior Katelin Cherry of Oklahoma City Westmoore High closed their three-year rivalry in the Class 5A cross country state championships.The two took the top two spots for the third consecutive year, with Vaughn (11:33.48) surprising spectators pulling away to a 13-second victory. It was the 10th head-to-head meeting between the two, Vaughn finishing with a 6-4 advantage and her second straight title. Edmond North High won the team title. Steven Baker (15:51.75) led three runners in the top 10 as Tulsa Union romped to the boys title, 39-105 over Jenks High.

 

Oregon

With the girls team recording a perfect score by sweeping the top five spots, the Central Point Crater High cross country teams swept the Southern Sky Conference team titles. Senior Riley Swanson won her second straight individual title in 19:23, and Kayleigh Tyerman, Arianne Lafierre, Silver Seibert and Laurie Stoutenburgh completed the top-five sweep for a 15-51 victory over Ashland High. Junior Zach Elliott (16:11) won the individual title as the nationally-ranked boys team beat Ashland 26-41, with five of the top nine finishers. All four teams advanced to the state tournament.

 

Pennsylvania

Larry Ryland’s 65-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter helped State College High (6-3) pull away from Hollidaysburg High 28-12. The Little Lions’ fourth straight victory virtually assured them a Class 4A District 3-6 playoff berth. Ryland’s run came one play after an encroachment penalty against Hollidaysburg gave the Little Lions a first down on fourth-and-1 at its own 29. State College’s fourth straight victory almost certainly secured a District 3-6 Class AAAA playoff berth with one regular-season game remaining. Ryland (16 carries, 178 yards) picked up all but two of those yards in the second half and scored twice as State College outgained Hollidaysburg (7-2) 367-181.

 

Rhode Island

The Woonsocket Mount St. Charles Academy doubles team of Hannah Morton and Caitlin Kline combined for a 7-5, 3-6, 6-0 victory to earn the decisive point in a 5-2 victory over Riverside Bay View High, Mount’s fourth Division 1 girls tennis state title in the past six years. After Bay View freshman Rebecca Curran recorded a victory at No. 1 singles, senior Melissa Ferry (No. 2), the state singles runnerup, teamed with Alexandra Lawrence, a junior and sister Meryl, a freshman, to record straight-set victories at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, for a 3-1 lead.

 

South Carolina

Taylors Eastside High’s volleyball team extended its season record to 17-1 and kept its perfect record in its new gym with a 25-17, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18 victory against Peach Blossom Region rival Greer Blue Ridge High in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs. In beating Blue Ridge for the third time in three matches this season, the Eagles dominated the net in the first two games with 25 kills and four blocks. After Blue Ridge won the third game, the Eagles got three kills and an ace from sophomore setter Carly DeBruhl (36 assists) in the decisive game. Eastside tallied 12 total kills in the game.

 

South Dakota

For the second time in as many weeks, Tyndall Bon Homme High beat a higher-seeded team in the Class 11B state playoffs. The visiting Cavaliers (7-3) avenged an earlier loss with a 15-6 victory over Wagner High. A 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Chase Kuhlman late in the first quarter gave Wagner an early 6-0 lead. Bon Homme answered with an 80-yard drive on its next possession, with quarterback Logan Tycz, a state wrestling champion last year, scoring on a 15-yard run for a 7-6 lead. In the fourth quarter, Joe Mann intercepted a pass to set up his 30-yard touchdown run. Tycz, who rushed for 100 yards and passed for 52, ran for a two-point conversion to finish the scoring.


Tennessee

The anticipated showdown between unbeaten teams in Region 5-3A was anything but. The second half was played with a running clock after Nashville David Lipscomb Campus School (8-1, 6-0) built a 42-6 halftime lead and routed Lewisburg Marshall County High (7-2, 5-1) 49-13, taking their fifth consecutive region title. Russ Moneypenny (10 carries, 125 yards) ran for three touchdowns, Jeremy Holt added 88 yards and two scores and Zach Rogers returned a punt 47 yards for a touchdown and set up another score with a 50-yard punt return. Kyle Lehning was 7-for-7 on extra-point kicks, extending his PAT streak to 82 to set a state record. The previous record of 79 was set in 2001.

 

Texas

Visiting Arlington High (3-5) erased an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to deal a huge blow to defending Class 5A Division 2 state champion Cedar Hill High's playoff hopes and revitalize its own postseason chances with a stunning 34-31 victory in District 8-5A play. Quarterback Brandon Kelsey (19 carries, 208 yards) scored on a 53-yard run, his third touchdown run of the game, and added a two-point conversion run with 3:13 remaining as Arlington, which scored 21 unanswered fourth-quarter points, can clinch a playoff berth by winning its final two games. Cedar Hill (5-3)  got 197 rushing yards and three touchdowns from quarterback James Hamilton.

 

Utah

In a marathon match that was finally decided on the seventh match points, Morgan High got 47 kills from standout Chelsey Garfield in a 31-29, 21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-8 victory over Price Carbon High in the Class 3A state title match. Setter Kelsey Rees, who finished with 64 assists. Garfield finished with 13 kills in the first game, and Morgan also got a solid performance from middle hitter Richelle Visage, who added 18 kills. Megan Garvin led Carbon with 22 kills and Joy Malone added 16 as Carbon capitalized on Morgan service errors to extend the match.

 

Vermont

Himesburg Champlain Valley High kept its championship streak alive despite graduating its top four runners from last year. Champlain Valley won the Division 1 crown for the fifth straight year. Caroline Carpenter’s ninth-place finish led the Redhawks past Essex Junction High 73-80. Junior Sarah Lange (19:59) of Brattleboro High was the individual champion. In Division 2, Swanton Mississquoi Valley High, behind Sarah Flint and Maeve Evans, recorded not only the program's first cross country crown, but the school's first state title in any sport since 1994. Manchester Burr and Burton Academy won its second straight Division 3 title.

 

Virginia

Top-seeded Chesapeake Great Bridge High and second-seeded Chesapeake Western Branch High, advanced to the Southeastern District finals. Both teams won their semifinal matches in four games. Great Bridge beat Chesapeake Hickory High 25-18, 24-26, 25-16, 25-22 as Alex Jones followed four Hickory points with kills in the final game and finished with 23 kills. Jana Little added 39 assists. Western Branch prevailed over Chesapeake Grassfield High as Ashley Schuler and Erin Paton each had four service points in the final game. Schuler also led the Bruins with 15 kills, Paton had 14 digs and Lindsay Cornatzer and Mackenzie Scott contributed 13 and seven assists, respectively.

 

Washington

Vancouver Mountain View High freshmen dominated the Class 4A district swimming title. Peggy Liang and Haley Holboke each won a pair of events and both competed on Mountain View’s two winning relay teams as the Thunder swimmers breezed to the team title, 336-273 over Ksyview High. Liang won the 50 freestyle (25.52) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.48). Holboke, meanwhile, won the 200 freestyle (2:09.66) and the 500 freestyle (5:45.72), a race she won by 17 seconds. Liang and Holboke joined teammates Christine Rice and Courtney Farance to victories in the 200 and 400 free relays. Battle Ground High's Bethany Hoopman won the 200 individual medley (2:18.49) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.97).

 

West Virginia

Defending Class 3A Parkersburg High (9-1) tallied the final 55 points of the game to beat Ripley High 55-3, closing the regular season. Matt Lindamood (13 carries, 98 yards) ran for three touchdowns and quarterback Andy Thomas threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Humphrey and returned an interception 18 yards for another score. Humphrey, Steve Armitage and Matt Newlon also ran for touchdowns as the Big Reds amassed 438 yards, 333 on the ground. The defense limited Ripley (2-7) to 233 yards, with Vikings quarterback Seth Parsons completing 17 of 29 passes for 124 yards.

 

Wisconsin

With his team leading 34-20 at halftime, Chris Echols returned the second-half kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, giving visiting Milwaukee Wisconsin Lutheran High (10-1) a three-score lead en route to a 48-27 victory over Greendale High in the second round of the state football playoffs. Echols also was a workhorse in the backfield, rushing 30 times for 245 yards and another touchdown. Greendale (9-2) quarterback Mike Hennessy (22-of-48, 277 yards) threw two touchdown passes, including a 66-yarder to Ben Ericksen, but was intercepted three times.

 

Wyoming

The Afton Star Valley High football team won its Class 4A playoff opener, 24-7 over visiting Worland High. The Braves rushed for 338 yards, with junior Kevin Brough (21 carries, 124 yards) running for a touchdown. Senior quarterback Jordan Abrams rushed for 118 yards, with 104 coming in th first half, including a 50-yard touchdown run, and Tim Hokanson ran for the Braves’ third touchdown. The Star Valley defense held the Warriors to minus-one yard in the first half, and 99 total yards overall. Star Valley advanced to meet Buffalo High, which beat Star Valley in the 2005 state final.
