Across the nation in high-school sports (January) AlabamaMcIntosh High (16-0), ranked No. 1 in Class A, scored 44 points in the first quarter on its way to a 96-28 victory over Millry High in the Washington County Tournament. Alexis Brossard scored all 10 of her points in the first quarter, Kimberly Davis scored 10 of her game-high 19 and Tanekequia Barnes had 10 of her 15 in the period as McIntosh led 44-4 after one period and 63-5 at halftime. Xavier Barnes and Alrica Bell scored 14 points apiece and Brittany Simmons had 10 for McIntosh, which played the Washington County High-Fruitdale High winner for the title. Latasha Hurd scored 14 points to lead Millry. AlaskaAnchorage West High (8-4 overall) rallied from a 36-35 halftime deficit and defeated visiting Eagle River Chugiak High 69-57 in a rematch of last season's Class 4A state championship game to stay one game behind Anchorage A.J. Dimond High in the Cool Inlet Conference. Senior Philip Hearn, who is committed to Alaska-Anchorage, scored a game-high 30 points for West. Hearn hit a pair of three-pointers and was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Kaben Clauson added 14 points. Brian Niedermeyer led Chugiak (5-4) with 25 points. ArizonaDefending Class 5A, Division 2 champion Tucson Sunnyside High got titles from Paul Garza (119), brothers Steven (125) and Ritchie Moreno (145) and Arizona State recruit Kyle DeBerry (152) to hold off 3A power Safford High 235-219 in one of Arizona’s most prestigious wrestling tournaments, the Tucson Flowing Wells Tournament. Senior state champion Justin Gaethje of Safford, 39-0 this season with 33 pins, was voted the meet’s Outstanding Wrestler after pinning Sunnyside’s Jerry Ochoa in the final. Another 3A state champion, junior Michael Guerrero (189) of Eloy Santa Cruz High, improved to 30-0. ArkansasLooking for its first Region 1-4A win, Gravette High’s girls basketball team nearly got it, building a 10-0 lead at the start of the game against Gentry High. But the visiting Lady Pioneers (14-4, 6-2) came back for a 43-42 win on Megan Meigs’ basket with 23 seconds reamining. Gravette (5-12, 0-8) still led 22-14 at halftime before Gentry forged a 30-30 tie after three quarters. Jennifer Vanhook had five treys, four in the second half, and 15 points for Gentry and Bailey Woods added 11 points. Gravette’s Kayla Britton led all scorers with 16 points. CaliforniaPoway High placed nine wrestlers in the top eight and breezed to the team title, 226-166.5 over Vacaville High in the Five Counties Tournament at Fountain Valley High. Justin Danz (171) of Shingle Springs Ponderosa High won the upper-weight Outstanding Wrestler award, pinning two-time state champion Louis Bland of Modesto Central Catholic High just before the first-period buzzer. The other OWs went to Ohio State signee Nikko Triggas (119) of Moraga Campolindo High, who breezed to the lower-weight award with four pins and a 14-3 major decision, and Jordan Abed (152) of Alhambra High. ColoradoDenver Colorado Academy (12-0), playing without injured post player Morgan Miller, stayed unbeaten with a 50-21 victory over Englewood St. Mary's Academy in Class 3A Metro League play. Leah Weiss scored 13 points and Anne Quinn added 12 points as Colorado Academy outrebounded St. Mary’s 22-10 the second half and outscored the Wildcats 28-11. The two teams scored just one point the first six minutes, but Quinn and freshman guard Meaghan Abman combined for 10 seconds-quarter points as Colorado Academy pulled away. Riley McHugh scored five points for St. Mary’s Academy (10-2). ConnecticutHost Danbury High won its 217th consecutive wrestling match against in-state competition, 38-25 over second-ranked Southington High in a battle of the state’s top two teams. Southington (14-1), the only team besides Danbury to get a first-place vote in the state coaches poll in the last decade, took an early 7-0 lead with victories by Jeff Solomon (119) and Dave Badgley (125). Danbury (11-1), whose only loss is to Bennington (Vt.). Mount Anthony High, got back-to-back-to-back pins from Dean Smith (145), Tyler Howe (152) and Dean Hancock (160) for a 25-10 lead and control of the match. DelawareNewark Glasgow High’s girls basketball team won its 10th straight game, 44-38 over Wilmington Delcastle High to stay unbeaten in Blue Hen Conference Flight A play. With Monica Pannell scoring 14 points to lead all scorers, Glasgow (13-2 overall) forced 27 Delcastle turnovers and held the Cougars scoreless for the final 2:47, scoring the final six points to break a 38-38 tie. Delcastle (10-5), which had a six-game winning streak snapped, was led by Ashley Robbins with 10 points. The Cougars also made just 4 of 16 free throws. FloridaLake Mary High’s girls soccer team advanced to the Class 6A, Region 1 semifinals by shutting out Winter Park High 2-0. Senior Katie Donnellan gave Lake Mary (18-1-2) a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into into the first half,, and junior Danielle DeLuca added an insurance goal late in the second half to ice the victory. Lake Mary hosted Gainesville Buchholz High (17-6-4) in the semifinals. The Bobcats outshot Orange Park Spruce Creek High 21-7 in a 3-1 victory as freshman Shelby Hayes and Lauren Hyden scored, Hyden added an assist and Jenna Ostuw added a late insurance goal. Powder Springs John McEachern High won its first Class 5A dual state title since 2003, 39-19 over defending champion Lilburn Parkview High. Vic Garrett (135) and Raleigh Abbott (140) scored pins to fuel a six-match winning streak. Winning their first state titles: Stockbridge High (4A), upsetting top-ranked Covington Eastside High 37-28 in the semifinals and beating Fayetteville Whitewater High 31-29 for the title, and Norcross Wesleyan School (AA), which beat LaFayette High on criteria after the teams tied 26-26. Jefferson High won its seventh straight A title and Ellijay Gilmer County High (3A) also won. HawaiiMililani High (12-2) beat Honolulu Moanalua High 6-3 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) softball semifinals. Skye Virtudes gave the Trojans the lead for good with a three-run homer in the first inning. Chanelle Senas went 3-for-4, Celina Garces was 2-for-3 and Kristi Oshiro had a hit and scored twice. Makani Duhaylonsod pitched a five-hitter for the win. hits and was supported by an errorless defense. Britni Ronolo was 2-for-3 with a triple for Moanalua (12-2). The win advanced Mililani to the OIA final against Ewa Beach Campbell High (13-1). IdahoRexburg Madison High (14-0), ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, survived 12 first-half turnovers and turned back Pocatello Highland High 77-63. Highland’s full-court press helped keep them within five points at halftime, and the Rams (6-8), with junior Taylor Tingey scoring 15 points in the game and senior Mike Davenport 11 points, used an 11-2 run to take a one-point lead with five minutes left in the game. But Madison, which had 27 assists in the game and only four turnovers after halftime, pulled away as senior Matt Hansen and junior Jace Balls combined to score 42 points. IllinoisBy a vote of 428-9, Illinois High School Association (IHSA) member schools overwhelmingly approved a proposal, which takes effect July 1, that bars coaches, school officials and booster clubs from distributing or promoting use of anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing dietary supplements to student-athletes. Random testing of high school athletes at state championship events could follow as early as the 2008-09 school year under another proposal that could go to the IHSA Board of Directors by April. Only one other state, New Jersey, has a steroid-testing policy for players at the high school level. IndianaBrittany Strohmeyer sank 5-of-6 free throws and scored nine of her 11 points in the final period and host Mooresville High used an 18-8 fourth-quarter run to upset previously-unbeaten Avon High, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, 59-51. Avon, which controlled the game the first three quarters, got a game-high 16 points from Brooklyn Morrow and 13 from Stephanie Thomas. Strohmeyer was one of four players in double figures for the Pioneers (7-11). Maegan Callaway and Caitlin Dougherty paced the way with 14 points each and Kayli Schafer added 12. IowaHost Iowa City West High (40-31) and Waverly-Shell Rock High (40-25), the state’s top two wrestling teams, scored back-to-back victories over Missouri’s top squad, Kansas City Oak Park High, in the final two rounds of the Lepic Duals. Iowa City West erased an early 16-0 deficit, ending the meet with five straight wins in the lower weights for a 40-31 victory. Ridge Kiley’s major decision at 112 and a forfeit at 119 made it 25-24. Pins by Dylan Carew (125) and Derek St. John (135), sandwiched around Nate Moore’s 9-5 decision over three-time state champion Scott O’Donnell at 130, completed the comeback. Defending Class 5A state wrestling champion Wichita Bishop Carroll High overtook 6A titlist Goddard High in the finals of the Derby Invitational, winning 178-170. State champion John Keller jump-started Bishop Carroll at 103, winning the only head-to-head match between the two schools by pinning Logan Rotha. Twin brother Jordan Keller then added a 7-2 victory over state champion Nathan Furches of Derby at 112. Goddard got a title from sophomore Boaz Beard (160), but state champion Tyler Caldwell (125) was upset 8-3 by fellow sophomore Alex Bridgeford of Omaha (Neb.) Harry A. Burke High. KentuckyTop-ranked Georgetown Scott County High outscored Pineville Bell County High 51-25 in the first half and cruised to a 78-52 win in the Toyota Classic. The host Cardinals were led by Richie Phares, who scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds off the bench. Matt Walls and Cameron Hundley each added 13 points. Winchester Clark County High advanced to meet Scott County by beating Fort Mitchell Dixie Heights High 71-41 as Preston Knowles scored 24 points and added eight rebounds in just 19 minutes. Tristan Jones added 16 points and 12 rebounds in 17 minutes for Clark County. LouisianaBaton Rouge St. Joseph’s Academy broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of goals in the first overtime, and the Redstickers held on for a 3-1 upset win over Division 1, District 4 leader Dutchtown High. St. Joseph’s generated two corner kicks in the seventh minute of overtime, with Megan Autman scoring on the second. Two minutes later, the Redstickers put the game out of reach as Maggie Eggers converted another corner kick, all coming off the foot of Ashley Brunet. The win came two days after a 4-2 loss to Dutchtown, part of a run of six games in eight days due a to a series of weather-related postponements. MaineThe Bangor High and Mount Desert Island High swimming and diving teams split a dual meet, Bangor’s defending Class A state champion girls team winning 106-80 and the three-time defending Class B state champion Trojan boys scoring a 107-76 victory. Double winners Ian Carbone (200-meter individual medley, 100 breaststroke) and Justin Gilmartin (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) led nine individual event winners for MDI. Lily Herbold (200 and 500 freestyle) picked up two wins and swam on both of Bangor’s winning relay teams, with Grace Barnett (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) also earning a pair of wins. MarylandA pair of free throws by Lateef Williams with 32 seconds remaining lifted Annapolis High (12-3) past cross-town rival Annapolis Broadneck High 71-70. The victory ended a 15-game winning streak for Broadneck (15-1), the longest in school history. The victory was the 621st for Annapolis coach John Brady, tying late Cardinal Gibbons coach Ray Mullis for the most career victories by a Baltimore-area coach. Ironically, Brady missed the game due to the death of his mother. Williams and David Chapman each scored 20 points for Annapolis. Broadneck’s J.J. Hicks led all scorers with 28 points. After tying its previous two games, Boston Catholic Memorial High (9-0-2) got back on track, scoring three second-period goals for a 4-2 victory over Danvers St. John’s Preparatory School in Boston Catholic Conference play. The score was tied 1-1 after the first period, but Ryan Smith, who scored twice for the Knights, and Bryan Rosata scored in a second period that saw Catholic Memorial outshoot the Eagles (7-2-4) 21-6. Goaltender John Jay helped preserve the lead in the third period after St. John’s Colin Prior scored a power-play goal just 30 seconds into the stanza on a two-man advantage. MichiganUnion City High, ranked No. 6 in Class C, won the Bangor Volleyball Tournament with its second victory of the day over Hopkins High, 25-16, 25-17. Amanda Keeler was the defensive leader for Hopkins, coming up with 54 digs and adding 24 kills, four service aces and three blocks. Phoenix DeVos led Hopkins with 27 kills and 11 blocks and added 42 digs. Brandie Merren had 87 assists, 26 digs, 12 kills and nine aces, while Nicole Jackobs (36 digs, 14 kills and eight aces), Amanda Henry (nine kills and four blocks) and Nicole Webber (38 digs) also contributed. Hopkins is now 15-7-5 this season. MinnesotaMike Hurley challenged for a record and won two events to keep Fergus Falls High’s boys swimming team unbeaten, 105-76 over Rocori High. Hurley won the 500-meter freestyle in 5:00.43, just five seconds off the team and pool record, and also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.77. Joel Money also was a double winner, taking the 100 butterfly in 1:00.99 and the 200 individual medley in 2:15.64. Other event winners: Illya Schuelke (200 freestyle, 1:59.52); Luke Money (100 backstroke, 1:02.79) and Preston Anderson (50 freestyle, 24.34). The Otters also swept all four relays. MississippiRachel Givan celebrated Senior Night by scoring a pair of goals to lead four-time defending Class 4A girls soccer champion Ridgeland High (15-2-2) past unbeaten and defending Class 5A champion Tupelo High 4-2. Givan’s second goal of the game on a breakaway, her 36th of the season, helped Ridgeland take a 3-2 lead in the second half. Becca MacNeill and Melissa Myers scored the other two Ridgeland goals, while Jana Mason and Meghan Brown scored for Tupelo. Ridgeland's four goals were twice as many as Tupelo (18-0-2) had allowed in its first 20 games. MissouriPlaying with an injured pinkie finger on her shooting hand, Silex High junior Ashley Fleming scored a game-high 31 points, hitting a three-pointer with 18 seconds reamining to give her team the lead for good in a 50-48 victory over host Bowling Green High in the semifinals of the Bowling Green Tournament. Silex (10-6) built a 30-18 halftime lead, but Bowling Green rallied to take its fist lead of the game at 45-44 on Fancy Lindsay’s basket with 2:17 remaining. Post player Anne Marie Hartung scored 13 points to lead Bowling Green, which went just 4-of-16 from the free-throw line. MontanaHavre High won the Class A Duals at Belgrade High, 48-42 over Libby High as they recorded seven pins. In the Great Falls Duals, Kalispell Flathead High and Great Falls C.M. Russell High each went 3-0. Shawn Lau (98-105) and Brian Ham (125) went 3-0 as Flathead beat Billings West High 66-21, Billings Senior High 51-20 and Billings Skyview High 51-27. CMR beat Skyview 44-31, Senior 50-21 and West, 70-9. Worden Huntley Porject High edged Lemmon (S.D.) High 90-87 to win the Battle of the Borders Tournament at Baker as Nic Hinebauch (98), Seth Snyder (105) and Jordan Ewen (140) won titles. Senior forward Brian Roling’s 27-foot buzzer-beater at the end of the second overtime lifted visiting Omaha Millard North High (11-2) past Omaha Benson High 64-63 for its fifth consecutive win. Roling hit both his three-point attempts for North, which was just 6-of-28 from behind the arc, including a paltry 1-of-14 in the second and third periods. Derrik Spooner led Millard North with 19 points, with Matt Conahan adding 13 points and Collin Horton 10. Benson (9-5) got 19 points from Stevelle Burns, 17 from Tyrell Atkins and 11 from standout L.C. Doss, who sat out much of the game with foul trouble. NevadaFourth-ranked Las Vegas Shadow Ridge High's girls basketball team (12-8 overall) nearly lost a 10-point fourth-quarter lead, but hung on to beat No. 6 North Las Vegas Mojave High 54-53. With sisters Tierra and LeNette Battle each scoring 16 points, Shadow Ridge led 54-44 with five minutes remaining. But Mojave (14-8) rallied behind Chelsea Hopkins, who led all scorers with 23 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. With the score 54-52, Hopkins missed the second of two free throws with 36 seconds remaining and the Rattlers could get no closer. Jessica Scarpati added 13 points for Shadow Ridge. New HampshireAll-State player Brian Chergey scored 18 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as Bow High (5-5), the Class I state runnerup a year ago, nearly blew a 10-point fourth quarter lead before turning back Laconia High, 56-48 for its fourth victory in five games. D.J. Poitras added seven points, five rebounds and five blocks. Peter Dargy (15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists), Brady O’Neil (11 points) and Connor McGuire (10 points) helped Laconia (5-5) close within 50-48 with two minutes remaining before Bow closed it out. New JerseyA quad meet that featured three of the state’s top teams saw defending Group 3 dual champion South Plainfield High (12-4) beat six-time defending Group 2 dual champion Newton Kittatinny High 32-21 and host Manahawkin Southern High 33-27. Southern’s two middle-weight stars, Penn State recruit Frank Molinaro and Beast of the East champion Luke Lanno, went down a weight to 140 and 145, respectively. Molinaro’s pin and Lanno’s major decision helped Southern (9-2) to a 30-12 cushion before South Plainfield closed the meet with five straight wins, capped by Nicky Pauls’ pin at 125. New MexicoRio Rancho High’s wrestling and boys basketball teams are both ranked No. 1 in the state. The wrestlers took the prestigious Top of the Rockies Tournament at Lafayette (Colo.) Centaurus High, outscoring Parker (Colo.) Ponderosa High 179-168.5 as three-time state champions Matt Ortega (125) and Vicente Varela (135) won titles. Trailing by two at halftime, the roundballers (17-1) rallied past Albuquerque La Cueva High 68-53 as Marcus Williams, Noah Wolfe and Daniel Steffensen combined for 44 points. New YorkSpencerport High, ranked No. 5 prior to the tournament by the New York State Sports Writers Association, prevailed in New York’s premier team event, the Union-Endicott Duals at Endicott High. From the Rochester-area Section 5, Spencerport went 4-0 in the event, including a 25-22 victory over top-seeded Islip High in the semifinals. That followed victories of 43-21 over Sayville High and 33-29 over the state’s top Division 2 school, Waverly High. Spencerport sealed the deal by beating Fulton High 26-15 for the title. After winning the title in the NHSCA National High School Juniors Wrestling Championships last season, Cary High senior Joey Farnsworth has had a dominating season at 103. Through his first 39 matches this season, all wins, Farnsworth, third in the Class 4A state meet a year ago, had not given up a single point – not even an intentional escape. Among those on Farnsworth’s opponents log so far: the wrestlers ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in 4A, Michael Townsend of Boone Watauga High and Devin Solow of Chapel Hill High, and David Henninger of Havelock High, ranked No. 2 in 3A. North DakotaFour-time defending Class B wrestling champion Napoleon High repeated as Bismarck Rotary Tournament champion, 194.5-184 over Rapid City (S.D.) Stevens High. Napoleon placed eight in the top five, with four champions: Jordan Dewald (160), Shannon Fettig (171), Taylor Gruenfelder (189) and Kriss McCleary (215). Other North Dakota winners: Belcourt Turtle Mountain Community High’s Shane Scott (112), Wahpeton High’s Justin Solberg (119), Mandan High’s Tyler Steinwand (135), Dickinson High’s Luke Mellmer (145), Bismarck High’s Tyler Johnson (152) and Fargo South High’s Jake Bruns (285). OhioFor the 10th year in a row, Lakewood St. Edward High won the Division 1 State Dual Meet Wrestling Championships at Wadsworth High. But after years of state tournament disappointments, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller High may have proven a worthy challenger to the Eagles and the rest of the Division 1 field. After strong performances in the Walsh Jesuit Ironman Invitational and The Clash National Duals, the Crusaders gave St. Edward a strong run in the finals, winning seven of the 14 bouts in a 39-27 loss. Germane Lindsey (140) and Frank Becker (285) were among Moeller’s winners. OklahomaA round of icy winter storms has wiped out many athletic events and given athletes at schools all over the state a bad case of cabin fever. The final two rounds of the Love’s Classic basketball tournament at Oklahoma City Bishop McGuinness High and the Putnam City Invitational at Oklahoma City Putnam City North High have been postponed twice. The Putnam City event will be delayed until February, with no date for the conclusion of the Love’s Classic yet set. The CD Warehouse Tournament at Bethel High, also set for February, has been postponed four times. OregonBryant Sentman led Cottage Grove High with 11 rebounds and Seth Hutchison sank four free throws in the final 15.4 seconds to keep the Lions (5-0) unbeaten in Sky-Em Conference play, 41-36 over Junction City High. Sentman also had six points and four blocks as Cottage Grove outrebounded Junction City 31-13, but Junction City (3-2) forced seven fourth-quarter turnovers, fueling a 6-0 run that cut Cottage Grove’s lead to 36-33 with 32 seconds remaining. Cottage Grove, despite committing 24 turnovers, got 11 points from Chris Robbins. Ryan Patterson led Junction with 12 points and Blair Wheadon added 10. PennsylvaniaTrailing by seven points entering the fourth quarter, visiting South Park High’s boys basketball team went 6-for-6 from three-point range in the final quarter to tie the game at 60-all, then stunned Washington Trinity High 71-65 in overtime, damaging the Hillers’ hopes to advance to the Section 4-AAA playoffs. Brandon Bradley, who had a game-high 35 points, scored 10 of South Park's 11 points in overtime and Corey Walker scored 12 points. Andrew Sweat scored 17 points, Sean McKnight had 15, Cody Endres 11 and E.J. Morasczyk 10 for Trinity. Rhode IslandComebacks were in order at Warwick Bishop Hendricken High and Tiverton High. Trailing by seven points with three minutes, Hendricken (10-0) closed the game with a 14-1 run and beat Esmond Smithfield High, 70-64 as David Rufful scored 41 points and Brendan Degnan added 12. Tiverton beat Pawtucket William E. Tolman High 81-73 after trailing by 13 points at halftime. Jim Miranda scored 26 of his game-high 36 points in the second half to lead the Tigers’ rally and teammate Nate Mello also got hot, scoring 16 of his 26 points after halftime. South CarolinaChris Miller was named the new head football coach at powerhouse Duncan James F. Byrnes High. Miller, who has served as the Rebels’ associate head coach and defensive coordinator the past three seasons, has head coaching experience, having served in that capacity for six years at Spartansburg Gettys D. Broome High in the 1990s. Miller succeeds Bobby Bentley, who accepted the head coaching position at Presbyterian College after coaching Byrnes for 12 seasons. Under Bentley, Byrnes won four Class 4A, Division 2 state championships, including three straight from 2003-05. South Dakota Visiting
Aberdeen Roncalli High (7-2) won for the sixth time in seven games,
using an 11-0 run in the third quarter to power a 68-61 victory at Mobridge
High. There were eight ties and seven lead changes in a back-and-forth
first half that saw Roncalli take a 33-31 halftime lead. Nick Ochsner,
the team’s leading scorer with 22 points, had four points and Justin
Kline (14 points) five as the Cavaliers scored the first 11 points of
the second half. Logan Albers (game-high 25 points) keyed an 8-2 run
as Mobridge (2-5) cut the lead to five after three quarters before Roncalli
pulled away again in the fourth quarter. Tennessee Shelbyville Central High’s girls basketball team, ranked No. 19 by USA Today, suffered its first District 8-3A loss, 54-50 to visiting Lawrenceburg Lawrence County High. There were seven lead changes and two ties in the final quarter as Lawrence County went 14-of-19 from the line to extend a one-point lead enterign the period. With Anisha Buchanan scoring a game-high 21 points, Shelbyville (20-3, 7-1) forced 17 Lawrence County turnovers, but was outrebounded 24-16 and shot only 1-of-12 from three-point range. Cori Jones (13 points), Angela Spann (12 points) and Andrea Bennett (11 points) led Lawrence County. TexasAmarillo Palo Duro High continued the most prolific boys basketball winning streak in Amarillo history, turning back Hereford High 91-70 for its 50th consecutive District 3-4A victory. The Dons (20-2, 4-0) used the press and defense to extend the five-year streak. Senior 6-foot-3 post player Justin Johnson led the way with 28 points, hitting three of his team’s eight three-pointers and scoring 10 consecutive second-quarter points that included a dunk after his own steal. All 50 wins in Palo Duro’s streak have been by double digits. Their last district loss was to Amarillo Canyon Randall High on Feb. 5, 2002. UtahErik Gallardo, a 5-foot-5 reserve guard, hit four treys and scored 18 points off the bench as Salt Lake City West High stunned Region 6-4A leader Salt Lake City Olympus High 54-50. The Blue Devils managed just two points in the third quarter, but Peoples Academy (2-13) never got closer than 11 points the second half. Pat Booth and Brad Couture each scored seven points for Williamstown. Brad Jones (eight points) and Tom Paine (seven points) led Peoples Academy. VirginiaTrailing by 16 points early in the fourth quarter, Suffolk Nansemond River High (14-1) went on a 22-4 run and rallied past No. 6 Suffolk Kings Fork High 70-65 in Southeastern District play. Andre Jones overcame a 4-of-12 shooting start to score 16 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter, adding nine rebounds and six blocks. Mark Brown added 18 points for Nansemond River, ranked third in the state. Jaquon Parker and Jamar Wertz each scored 22 points for Kings Fork (13-4), which missed 9 of 10 free throws down the stretch. WashingtonIsaac Romero (112) improved to 26-0 as Sunnyside High (5-3) beat Kennewick High 42-31. Romero’s 58-second pin gave Sunnyside a 9-0 lead after the second match of the night and gave Romero 139 team points this year, six shy of the team record of 145 set by Carlos Garcia in 1996. Brother Steven Romero (23-4) scored a 7-4 victory at 103 to open the meet. Ricardo Rivera (119), J.T. Gonzalez (24-3 at 125) and Tomas Pena (135) made it 27-3 before Kennewick scored three pins and a major decision to rally within 27-25. Andrew Swinehart (171) and Angelo Salazar (285) scored pins to wrap up the win. West VirginiaWinfield High (10-4), ranked No. 8 in Class AA, sank 16-of-19 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter as five different players to hold off Class 3A rival Hurricane High (3-12), 76-67. Overall, Winfield hit 23 of 29 free throws, shot 50 percent from the field and hit 7 of 13 three-pointers. Caleb Ashley finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds, Todd Hutchinson added 14 points, six boards and three assists and Sam Lemmerman had 16 points and eight assists. Totino Grace High 58-13 and Ellsworth High 47-12, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High came up with four signature wins, including senior state champion Josh Chappa’s 6-2 victory over the nation’s top-ranked 112-pounder, Tony Ramos, at 119, but still lost 26-22 to Carol Stream (Ill.) Glenbard North High in a battle of nationally-ranked teams. Also scoring key wins in the 7-7 match split: Carl DeLuca (103), 11-4 over Ironman placewinner Jamie Warczynski; Ben Best (140), a 7-5 winner over state qualifier Danny Monaco, and Justin Fuller (189), who outlasted Roy Feltson in sudden death. WyomingGillette Campbell County High (272.5) and Casper Natrona County High (174) finished 1-2 in the 16-team Chadron (Neb.) Tournament. Casper Kelly Walsh High (125.5) finished fifth and Cheyenne East High (115) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, and the four teams combined to claim 10 of the 14 champions.
