Across the nation in high-school sports (February) AlabamaHoover High’s Tyler Osborn (140) closed his high school career by winning his fifth Class 6A state title. He could be the fifth Alabama wrestler to win five state crowns over a five-year period. Junior twins Chase and Kyle Cuthbertson of Scottsboro High, NHSCA National High School Sophomores Wrestling Championships champions last year, are now four-time state champions after pinning their way to titles at 152 and 160, respectively, leading Scottsboro to the Class 5A title. With older brother Michael having won five state titles from 2001-05, the Cuthbertsons could become the first American high school family with three five-time state champions. AlaskaHollan Gravley (135) won his fourth state title, pinning his way to the Outstanding Wrestler award with four falls in a total of seven minutes, 37 seconds, to lead surprising Palmer Colony High to the Class 4A state title, 229.5-170 over Eagle River Chugiak High. Sophomore Kyle Wilson (112) also won for Colony. Wasilla High’s Alan Bartelli (119) and Anchorage A.J. Dimond High’s Zack Shelley (152) won their third state titles. Junior Michaela Hutchison (112) of Soldotna Skyview High, who became the first girl to a win a boys state title a year ago, finished fourth. ArizonaPhoenix Washington High’s girls basketball team (31-2) repeated as Class 4A Division II champion, pulling away from Page High in the second half for a 60-37 victory in a matchup of the tournament’s top two seeds. With her team ahead by just two points at halftime, senior forward Brittanie Simmons (11 points) ignited a second-half surge with two baskets. Junior guard Olivia Major hit four three-pointers and led Washington with 19 points. Page (25-5), which led 15-12 after one quarter, had a hot hand in 6-foot-2 sophomore T.J. Manson, who had 16 first-half points. ArkansasCabot High (21-5) secured a berth in the Class 7A state girls basketball tournament with a 67-46 victory over Bryant High, the team Cabot coach Carla Crowder led to multiple state titles. With Jamie Sterrenberg, whose 17 points led the Lady Panthers, scoring the game’s first five points, Cabot surged to a 16-2 first-quarter lead. The Lady Panthers led 27-11 after one quarter and 41-19 at halftime. A 13-2 run extended Cabot’s lead to 54-23 late in the third quarter. Shelby Ashcraft added 10 points and Rachel Glover and Leah Watts had eight points each for Cabot. Chelsea Smith-Carmichael of San Diego Bishop’s School and Jake Fisher of San Diego Francis Parker School are the Winter 2007 recipients of the Spirit of Sport Award, presented by the California Interscholastic Federation. Smith-Carmichael, a four-year letterwinner in water polo and swimming, was a member of the USA National Girls Youth Water Polo Team that won the World Championships in 2006. The College Board presented her with the AP Scholar with Honor Award. Fisher captained his school’s soccer and tennis teams this year and was an All-San Diego Section selection in soccer. He is a National Merit semifinalist and a member of the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society. ColoradoSmall-school Class 2A had plenty of big action as Kevin LeValley (145) of Limon High became the state’s 15th four-time state champion and Eric Brunkhardt (152) of Merino High and Tucker Lane (285) of Nucla High won his third crown in dominating fashion. Lane pinned his way to a state title for the second time in his career – he also did it as a freshman – and had 14 state tournament pins in his career. Junior Tyler Graff (130) of Loveland High won his third Class 5A title as Parker Ponderosa High won for the fourth consecutive year. Three-time state champion Sonny Yohn (189) led Alamosa High to a repeat Class 4A crown. ConnecticutWindsor High’s top-ranked girls basketball team (23-0) turned back upset-minded Enfield Enrico Fermi High 52-44 in the Central Connecticut Conference tournament final. A 7-0 run in 39 seconds helped the Warriors erase their final deficit with under four minutes remaining and they made 7 of 9 free throws in the final 52 seconds to seal the win. The victory was the 200th for coach Vincent Cianfarani, now in his 10th season. Senior center Ashley Williams scored 17 points and had 15 rebounds to lead Windsor, Cierra Baker had 14 points, six assists and five steals and Brittany Huggins scored 11 points. Leehna Ware scored 15 points and Nicole Delano and Megan St. Amand had 11 each for Fermi (19-4). DelawareCamden Wyoming Caesar Rodney High (17-1) won an unprecedented fifth consecutive Division 1 dual state title and sixth in seven years, 44-12 over Wilmington St. Mark’s High in the final. Caesar Rodney’s two-time Cadet National champion Alex Meade reversed two previous losses with a 7-3 victory over St. Mark’s Tommy Abbott in a match that took place at 152. Caesar Rodney got to the finals by beating New Castle William Penn High 41-24, while St. Mark’s and Georgetown Sussex Central High tied 32-32 in the other semifinal. St, Mark’s advanced by scoring first in eight of the 14 matches. Newark Hodgson Vo-Tech High won the Division 2 title, 35-27 over Bear Caravel Academy. FloridaIn addition to winning his fourth Class 2A state title, Sean Joyce (145) of Brandon High finished his career as the state’s all-time leading winner with a 260-9 record. Joyce, sophomore Eric Grajales (112) and senior Tom Timothy (160) all finished the season 48-0, Grajales and Timothy winning their second titles. Freshman Joe Cozart (125) also won as Brandon outscored Bradenton Manatee High 221.5-138.5 for the title. Jesse Robbins (171), one of three senior state champions, won his second state title and his first since his eighth-grade season as Oviedo High pulled away from Homestead South Dade High 165.5-115.5 in Class 3A. Brandon Hatchett (160) repeated as champion and Tyler Davis (145) also won for Oviedo. Powder Springs John McEachern High added the Class 5A individual title to the dual state crown it won in January, outscoring Marietta Walton High 210-190. Sophomore Brandon Westerman won his second 103-pound title for McEachern. Carrington Banks (152) of McDonough Union Grove High won his fourth state title, picking up three pins, a technical fall and a major decision. Kyle Baird (130) also won his fourth title to lead Jefferson High to its seventh consecutive Class A title, and Stockbridge High (Class 4A) also was a double champion. Dublin West Laurens High (3A) and LaFayette High (AA) also won. HawaiiKeone Reyes, voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, overcame foul trouble to score 21 points and Beau Albrechtson pulled down 16 rebounds as Kaimuki High (26-8) downed Honolulu Punahou High 61-53 to capture the Division 1 state championship, its first since 1993. Reyes and Albrechtson also combined to make 18 of 19 free throws. Daniel Colon added 11 points and five rebounds for Kaimuki. Seniors Miah Ostrowski and Spencer McLachlin each scored 14 points each for Punahou (24-5), and McLachlin added eight rebounds. Maimuki held Punahou to 36 per cent shooting and held a 40-22 rebounding edge. IdahoBoise Centennial High overcame an eight-point deficit entering the finals and won its first Class 5A state title since 1989, 226-214 over Idaho Falls High. Four of Centennial's five finalists came away with gold medals, including repeat titles by junior Avery Garner (135) and seniors Kirk Smith (171) and Marshal Pirtz (215), while all four of Idaho Falls’ finalists lost. Eagle High’s Jaron Hathaway (140) and Boise Borah High’s Scott Armstrong (145) also won for the second time. Shelley High (270 points) set an all-time scoring record in running away with the Class 3A title. Blackfoot High (4A) and Ashton North Fremont High (2A) were the other team champions. IllinoisAlbert White (152) of Chicago St. Rita High and Mike Benefiel (171) of Lombard Montini High led a star-studded Class AA field by winning their fourth state titles in drama-packed matches. White avenged a 1-0 loss to Lockport High junior Lucas Roth by scoring four takedowns in an 8-7 victory, while Benefiel had junior Jordan Blanton of Richmond-Burton High, a two-time state champion and 111-0 in his career before the match, on his back for the match’s first 90 seconds before settling for an 8-2 victory. Two of Class A’s senior stars, Clayton Rush (119) of Aledo High and John Odeen (145) of Coal City High, repeated in dominating fashion. IndianaIt truly was a World Series between the state’s top two 140-pound wrestlers, senior Eric McGill of Munster High and junior Brennan Cosgrove of Hobart High. Their meeting in the state title match was their seventh of the season – and the sixth in a seven-week period. McGill’s 6-5 victory in the state final gave him the season series, 4-3. It was the second state title for McGill, who won last year at 125, and the second runnerup finish for Cosgrove. A pair of Mishawaka High wrestlers, sophomore Josh Harper (112) and senior Ian Hinton (189), also repeated as champions along with Cedar Lake Hanover Central High junior Andrew Howe (152), who won all four of his matches by technical fall. IowaIowa City West High used its four state champions – juniors Nate Moore (125) and Grant Gambrall (171), sophomore Derek St. John (135) and freshman Nick Moore (130) – to overcome a three-point deficit entering the finals and beat arch-rival Waverly-Shell Rock High 134-123 to win the Class 3A individual state title. Bettendorf High (111 points) made it a clean sweep for eastern Iowa. Jimmy Waters (189) of Council Bluffs Lewis Central High won his third title. Junior Andrew Long (112) of state champion Creston High and seniors Kyle Pedretti (125) of Monona High and T.J. Moen (145) of Saydel High won their second state titles in Class 2A. Goddard High sophomores Tyler Caldwell (125), Mitchell Means (140) and Boaz Beard (160) and junior Brandon Bonewell (152) won titles, but Manhattan High took the Class 6A title, 175-155.5 as freshman Jeff Vesta (103) and junior Steven Andrus (285) won titles. Overland Park St. Thomas Aquinas High recovered from a semifinals collapse to win Class 5A, 168-134 over Wichita Bishop Carroll High on the strength of four third-place finishes and four fifth-place finishes. Junior Romero Cotton (171) of Hutchinson High won his third 5A title. Beloit High and Smith Center High conspired to score a small-class upset, sharing the 3-2-1A title with 116.5 points over favored Norton High (115). KentuckyGeorgetown Scott County High (23-3), ranked No. 1 in the Louisville Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings, got 53 points from Rebecca Gray and defeated host Louisville Fern Creek High 108-102 in the highest-scoring game in girls' state high school basketball history. The 210 combined points smashed the previous record of 193 set in Russellville Logan County High's 107-86 win over Hopkinsville Christian County High on Feb. 8, 2001. Fern Creek (12-12) led 79-74 entering the fourth quarter, but Gray scored 25 points as the Lady Cardinals outscored Fern Creek 34-23 in the final period. Kayla Moses added 20 points for Scott County. Monique Reid scored 42 points and Sherrice Gaines added 35 for Fern Creek. LouisianaPonchatoula High’s girls basketball team has turned the Class 5A state tournament on its head, advancing to the state meet for the first time in 30 years with the first three post-season victories in school history. The Lady Green Wave (32-9) avenged two blowout losses by rallying from am 11-point second-period deficit to beat host Boutte Hahnville High 61-48 in the third round. After committing 12 first-half turnovers, Ponchatoula’s defense held Hahnville to just one field goal the first 14 minutes of the second half and leading scorer Lindsey Joubert scored on a pair of putbacks late in the third quarter to give the Lady Green Wave a 39-35 lead they never lost. MaineTied with Sanford High with a state-record eight consecutive titles, North Berwick Noble High was dethroned in its bid to win its ninth straight, 145.5-130.5 by Waterboro Massabesic High in the Class A state tournament. Each team had five finalists and three champions, but Massabesic held a 10-7 edge in placewinners. In Class C, Jeremiah Barkac (112) of Dexter High became the state’s seventh four-time champion and the second in his family – brother Chris won four crowns from 2002-05. He could be joined next year by juniors John Hussey (152) of Class A Eliot Marshwood High and Jerod Rideout (145) of Class C Dover-Foxcroft Foxcroft Academy, who won for the third time. MarylandLaKisha Walker’s steal and free throws with 7.9 seconds remaining in overtime gave top-ranked Baltimore St. Frances Academy (23-5) a 68-63 victory over Owings Mills McDonogh School and the Panthers' fifth straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship. Walker, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, scored a game-high 18 points, Tanika Jeffers had four treys and 16 points and Mi-Khida Hankins and and Kandice Green combined for 21 points and 20 rebounds. Brittany Mallory scored 16 points and Destiny Jacobs 14 for McDonogh (21-5), which led by eight points with less than six minutes remaining in regulation before St. Frances rallied. Senior Ryan Malo (189) of Danvers St. John's Preparatory School improved to 54-0 with 52 pins in winning the All-State Championship. He rolled up an 8-0 lead before pinning Lawrence Central Catholic High's Mike Leavitt in the second period of the final. The state’s top team, Division 1 power Lowell High, advanced four to the finals and got titles from Sean Boyle (112) and Phil Gauthier (171). Franklin High also picked up a pair of champions, Ryan Donovan (145) and Matt Sodebottom (285). Boyle shut out defending champion Jose Cabrera of Springfield Central High 7-0 and won the lower-weight Outstanding Wrestler award, while Vinnie Renaut (152) of Plymouth South High won the upper weight OW. MichiganTied at 34-34 entering the fourth quarter, host Goodrich High (14-3) blew away Oxford High with a 28-8 fourth-quarter blitz to register a 62-42 nonconference victory. The fourth-quarter run included five treys as Mike Boisture scored 16 points and Jeff Cramb and Mike Christiansen each added 10 points for Goodrich. Hot-and-cold Oxford (5-12) led 14-7 after the first quarter, but Goodrich put together an 18-5 second-quarter run and led by six at halftime. Sophomore Rick Brady scored 20 points in his varsity debut and Zach Tilley added 10 points for Oxford. MinnesotaDefending Class 2A state hockey champion St. Paul Cretin-Derham Hall School got a hat trick from senior forward Chad Samuelson and pounded St. Paul Johnson High 10-3 in the Section 2 semifinals. Johnson hung tough the first half of the game, but Samuelson’s third goal of the game in the second period triggered six unanswered goals to close the game. Chris Hickey assisted on two of Samuelson’s goals. Woodbury High also advanced to the finals, edging Oakdale Tartan High 4-3. After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, Woodbury outshot Tartan 16-3 in the second period and took command with two goals in each of the final two periods. MississippiColumbus New Hope High (31-5) nearly blew a 12-point lead in the final five minutes, but held on to beat two-time defending Class 4A state champion Jackson Lanier High 83-81 in the North Mississippi final. Lanier (34-3) hadn’t lost in three months as a 30-game winning streak ended. Junior 6-foot-9 forward Rashanti Harris scored 20 points to lead the Trojans, while Dale Hughes added 19 points, Ray Knight 18 and Brandon White 11. Both teams advanced to the state tournament and a potential state final rematch. Lanier senior guard R.L. Horton scored a game-high 34 points, but missed a potential tying 15-footer in the final seconds. Benjamin George added 16 points and Terry Church 11 for Lanier. MissouriAn underdog despite entering the Class 4 state tournament with three state crowns, Scott O’Donnell (130) of Kansas City Oak Park High avenged one of his four losses by beating fellow state champion Corey Carr of Kansas City Park Hill High 5-4. Another wrestler reversing a January loss was the nation’s top-ranked heavyweight, Dom Bradley of Blue Springs High. Bradley handed Oak Park’s Elijah Madison his first and only loss of the season, 5-3 in the semifinals en route to his second title. Oak Park pummeled O’Fallon Fort Zumwalt West High 238-147.5 for the team title. Wentzville Holt High (Class 3), Platte City Platte County High (Class 2) and Brookfield High (Class 1) also won. MontanaKalispell Flathead High repeated as Class AA team champion, setting several state records. Flathead’s 347.5 points broke their own record of 325, set in 2004, and the Braves also set new AA records by advancing nine to the finals – the previous record was eight, set by Billings Skyview in 2001 and 2002 and tied by Kalispell in 2004 – and 18 state placewinners, bettering by one the record of 17 they set last year. In Class A, Sidney High’s Jesse Obergfell (119) pinned his way to his fourth state title and state champion Havre High’s Ethan Hinebauch (189) and Matt Schnittgen both pinned their way to their third state titles. Glasgow High dethroned four-time defending champion Conrad High to win Class B-C. Crete High (23-0) returned to the Class B state girls basketball tournament for the fourth consecutive year, 44-32 over Lincoln Pius X High in the Class B-1 district final. Sophomore Marissa Kastanek shook off a 1-for-9 shooting start and score 20 points, eight coming in a 14-5 third-quarter run that helped Crete assume control, 28-21. Crete shot just 25 per cent the first half, but completely turned it around after intermission, shooting 67 per cent the final two quarters. Jordan Searcey, who led St. Pius X (12-7) with 14 points and four treys, one of those giving the Thunderbolts their final lead at 21-18 midway through the third quarter. NevadaLas Vegas Meadows School rolled to its fourth consecutive Class 2A boys basketball title, 83-50 over Panaca Lincoln County High. The Mustangs were 8-of-11 from three-point range in the first half, reserve Mike Wallace setting a 2A tournament record by going 6-for-6 from behind the arc. Jon Chino (24 points, 12 rebounds) led five scorers in double figures. Lincoln County held Meadows senior center Mychal Martinez scoreless the first half, but still trailed 38-20 thanks to the outside shooting. Martinez scored 14 second-half points, adding six rebounds, three blocks and four steals. Camden Goorjian and Brandon Baccus scored 10 points each for the Mustangs, the first team to win four straight in any class in 22 years. New HampshireFor the first time in more than a decade, Concord High beat two-time defending New England champion Plaistow Timberlane High, 28-22 in a match billed as the Granite State’s “Match of the Century.” Host Timberlane, which had a 69-match winning streak snapped, led until Concord sophomore Brandon Paige (119) scored a reversal with 25 seconds remaining for a 2-1 victory over state and New England champion Joey O’Connor, avenging two previous losses and tying the match at 13-13. Consecutive victories by Denzil Garvey (130), unbeaten three-time state champion Tyler Saltsman (135), Alex Buessing (140) and Derek Bisson (145) gave Concord a 28-16 lead with just one match remaining. New JerseyJackson Memorial High repeated as Group 4 dual champion, beating Manahawkin Southern Regional High for the third time this season, winning nine of the first 10 matches en route to a 38-22 victory in the group final. Swedesboro Kingsway High upset Oakhurst Ocean Township High 33-28 to win the Group 3 and South Plainfield High won its fifth Group 2 title in six years, 42-9 over Hackettstown High. Paulsboro High used its talented upper weights to race to a 37-0 lead after nine matches in a 40-15 over Kenilworth David Brearley High, its 25th consecutive Group 1 crown. Cherry Hill Camden Catholic High (A) and Rutherford St. Mary’s High (B) each won their fourth consecutive Parochial titles. New MexicoAlbuquerque Sandia High (23-2) avenged one of its two losses this season, beating Albuquerque La Cueva High 45-38 on Senior Night to move back into a tie for the District 2-5A lead. With senior forward Kendra Coveal out with a knee injury, the Matadors’ backcourt tandem, Simone Buckhanan and Jayne Kanyinda, stepped up to score 17 and 15 points, respectively, and they used their speed to establish the offensive tempo. Defensively, Sandia limited the Bears to just 12 first-half points in the first half and held La Cueva's top scorer, Brenna Freeze, without a field goal the first three quarters. New YorkJustin Wilkinson scored 28 points, 14 in each half, and teammate Keith Britt added 19 points and 10 rebounds as top-seeded Rensselaer High (16-5) whipped Hadley-Luzerne High 72-45 in a Section 2, Class C boys basketball quarterfinal game. The Rams played their fourth straight game without star center Kenny Plue, who has a stress fracture in his foot and is most likely out for the rest of the season, but took a 31-22 at halftime and widened it to 51-36 at the end of the third quarter. Hadley-Luzerne (10-12) got 17 points from Josh Ladd, 10 coming in the opening quarter, and Brendan Emery added 15 points. The
Durham Riverside boys basketball team made history, winning its first-ever
sectional title with a 56-46 victory over Apex Middle Creek High. Weslye
Saunders scored 17 points and added 15 rebounds to lead Riverside (26-4).
He also held Middle Creek’s 6-foot-8 center, Marcus Kitts, to nine
points. A 13-0 run in the second and third quarters helped Riverside
take a 29-21 lead and command of the game. Phillip Williams had 14 points,
four rebounds, and three steals, Justin Burton added nine points and
three assists and Carlos Sanford scored eight points. Garrius Adams
led Middle Creek (22-8) with 17 points. Bismarck High (19-5) beat Fargo North High for the second consecutive year in the stat girls hockey tournament, 2-1 as Brittany Mayer scored the game-winning goal for the second straight time as well and senior goalie Julie York made 26 saves in her final high school game. Cassie Beckerleg scored a power-play goal on assists by Sue Obermiller and Jordan Brenneman to give Fargo North (18-5-1) a 1-0 lead late in the second period, but Lindsey Sauer set up Paige Hagness for a 1-1 tie just 12 seconds later. Mayer’s goal early in the third period clinched it for Bismarck, which outshot Fargo North 32-27. OhioSenior 145-pounder Dan Gonsor, up a weight at 152, scored a 7-4 victory in the meet’s final match as Lakewood St. Edward High overcame Blairstown (N.J.) Blair Academy 29-27, their first victory over the Bucs in seven years as the nation’s top two wrestling teams battled down to the wire. Sean Nemec (160), Brian Roddy (171) and Chris Honeycutt (189) all won with bonus points as St. Edward opened an early 22-4 lead before Blair responded with six victories in seven bouts to take its only lead at 27-26. Blair’s final victory came on two-time National Prep champion Eric Medina’s decision at 145, which allowed Gonsor to win the final match – and the meet. OklahomaTulsa Union High won its first Class 5A dual state title, beating defending champion Midwest City High 29-27 in the semifinals and prevailing over Ponca City High on criteria in the title match, holding an 8-6 edge in match victories after the two teams tied at 30-30. After seeing its 10-year title streak ended by Catoosa High last year, El Reno High returned to the summit with a 34-26 victory over Catoosa. With his team ahead by five points, state champion Chris Hacker, moved up a weight to 160, clinched the title by beating Spencer Hobbs 1-0. Perry High became the state’s only repeat champion, winning its fifth consecutive Class 2A title, and Cushing High prevailed in Class 3A. OregonHermiston High, which competed in the NHSCA Final Four this season, easily won the Class 5A state title, 215-156 over Prineville Crook County High as seniors Brent Parks (140) and Troy Kessell (189) won their second titles and sophomore Ben Jorgensen (103) also won. Tyler Phillips (130) of Turner Cascade High and Ryan Smith (160) of Crook County won their third titles. Redmond High senior Austin Enoch (140) won his third title in 6A, with Roseburg High taking the team title. Sweet Home High (Class 4A), Burns High (Class 3A) and Culver High (Class A-2A) also won team crowns. PennsylvaniaWith Tim Murphy (215) and Jim Mutch (285) scoring dramatic turnaround victories, Nazareth High (22-2) beat District 11 rival Easton High 40-21 in the Class 3A dual state final. It was the third match between the two teams in 10 days and the second won by the Blue Eagles. Bobby Ward avenged losses in the previous two duals with a 4-1 victory over fellow senior Juju Drummond at 130 as Nazareth, which lost eight of the 14 matches in a 29-26 loss to Easton in the district final the previous week, won nine times in the state final. Greenville H.A. Reynolds High repeated as Class AA champion with a 33-26 victory over Center Valley Northwestern Lehigh High. Rhode IslandCranston West High completed back-to-back double state wrestling championships, winning the individual state title by outscoring Warwick Bishop Hendricken High and East Providence High, 159-150-149. The Falcons and East Providence were tied with 145 points each, and Cranston West pulled away by going 3-for-3 in the finals. Shawn Giblin (125) won his second state title Alfred Raymond (152) and Nick Baccaire (215) also won. Justin Belanger (130) of Exeter/West Greenwich High won his third state title and Providence Mount Pleasant High’s Sean Soriano (145) scored one of the biggest upset by pinning North Kingstown High’s Ted Coppa, the Outstanding Wrestler in the state tournament a year ago. South CarolinaA.J. Green scored 33 points, 12 in a pivotal fourth-quarter surge, and added 17 rebounds to power Summerville High (23-5) to the Class AAAA Lower State championship, 71-63 over Hartsville High. Matt Galbreath’s three-pointer at the third-period buzzer gave Summerville a 48-47 lead it never lost. Green, a 6-foot-4 junior, is averaging nearly 28 points per game in the playoffs. Galbreath added 13 points for the Green Wave, who led 32-28 at halftime. Jared Marine led Hartsville (20-6) with 22 points, including 12 in the third quarter, and Andrew Varn added 13 points. Wermers also won at 145 as Parkston outscored Wagner High 132-123. Eighth-grader
Logan Storley (119) of Webster High won his second title, keeping alive
his chances to win six state crowns. Also winning for the second time:
Alcester-Hudson High’s Nathan Sigman (152) and Wagner’s Ryan Kocer
(171). Salem McCook Central High’s Seth McGregor completed a 47-0
season to win at 215. Tennessee Brentwood Academy’s boys and girls basketball teams swept the Division 2 Middle Region titles, both beating Nashville Ensworth School in the finals. The Lady Eagles (26-6) held off a late rally for their 14th consecutive victory, 43-42 as guard Tenisha Townsend scored 15 points, including three treys. Emily Perkins scored 15 points and Marie Carpenter had 13 for Ensworth (16-5). The boys game had no such drama as the four-time defending state champions rolled 88-59. Brandon Brown led the Eagles (23-3) with 21 points, with Brian Wright adding 16 points and John Garrett 14. Tavarres Jefferson scored 21 points for Ensworth (12-14), which made nine 3-pointers. TexasLatoya Piper scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Connally High past visiting San Antonio Brackenridge High 53-33 in a Class 4A girls area-round playoff game. The Cougars (32-3), ranked third in the Texas Girls Coaches Association's Class 4A poll, also got 10 points from Asia Kuykendall as they raced to a 13-2 first-quarter lead and were never threatened after that. Eight Cougars found their way onto the score sheet. Connally limited Brackenridge (26-9) to just two points in the third quarter, scoring 11 11 straight points to build a 48-21 lead after three periods. Jennifer Munoz led Brackenridge with 11 points. UtahShay Warren (125) became one of two four-time state champions in Class 5A, leading Ogden Weber High to a 241.5-150 romp past defending champion Bountfiul Viewmont High in the team race. Sean Porter (140) of Kaysville Davis High joined Warren as a four-time champion and junior Josh Chamberlain (135) of Springville High won his third Class 4A title. Sophomore Ethan Lofthouse (152) won his second state title and freshman brother Raider pinned his way to the 103-pound crown to lead defending champion Hyrum Mountain Crest High (239) past Brigham City Box Elder High (226.5) and Springville (211). VermontTop-seeded South Burlington Rice Memorial High’s girls basketball team (21-1) advanced to the Division 1 state semifinals with a 44-30 victory over St. Johnsbury Academy. After building a 23-18 halftime lead, Rice quickly extended its lead to eight points early in the third quarter as Kelli Hier scored 11 of her 12 points in the second half. Stephanie Johnston scored six points for Rice, which beat the Hilltoppers (12-10) for the third time this season, and held St. Johnsbury star Carrie Bunnell (11 points) to four points. Rice’s Katie Dorey added 10 points Kate Desrochers led St. Johnsbury with 10 points and Emily Letourneau added eight. VirginiaReston South Lakes High’s 55-49 loss to Chantilly Westfield High in the opening round of Group 3A Northern Region play brought to an end the distinguished career of South Lakes coach Wendell Byrd. In 23 seasons on the South Lakes sideline, Byrd’s teams compiled a 441-153 record. Byrd recently won his 12th district title and the Seahawks also won six region titles and reached the state finals twice, finishing second in 1999 and 2003. An elementary school teacher for 31 years before retiring last summer, Byrd was the recipient of a Disney Teacher Award in 1990. WashingtonTournament MVP Roni Jo Mielke scored 22 points to lead four players in double figures, and added six steals as Sprague-Harrington High (25-4) won its first girls basketball state title with a 67-48 win over Sunnyside Christian in the Class 1B championship game. The Falcons forced 19 turnovers, pulling away in the third quarter. Maria Rustemeyer scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Falcons and Jamie Larmer and Jackie Lowman each scored 10 points. Brittany den Hoed led Sunnyside Christian with 13 points. Melanie Van Wingerden and Tori Van Wingerden, both voted to the All-Tournament Team, and Andrea Schutt each added 10 points. West VirginiaHuntington High teammates O.J. Mayo and Patrick Patterson have both been selected to compete in the McDonald’s All-American Boys Basketball Game on March 28 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky. Mayo and Patterson will play on the East squad and join 22 of the country’s other top high school seniors competing in the 30th annual game. They were the only high school teammates chosen for the prestigious squad. The 6-foot-5 Mayo, a Southern California recruit, leads West Virginia in scoring at 29.7 points per game, and his point total includes 54 slam-dunks. The 6-foot-8 Patterson averages 17.9 points, 12.4 rebounds and 4.2 blocked shots for the Highlanders (20-2) and leads the team with 78 dunks. WisconsinVisiting Waupaca High (16-4, 12-2) won the final boys basketball title in the Valley 8 Conference, beating Appleton Xavier High 51-46 in their regular-season finale. Waupaca, which won 10 of its final 11 games, won its first league title since 1999-2000, the inaugural year of the Valley 8 Conference. Next year six of the eight Valley 8 schools, including Waupaca and Xavier, will be absorbed into the new 10-team Eastern Valley Conference.Junior guard Cameron Nicewander led the Comets with 16 points, including four first-half three-pointers, and led a defense that allowed just 44 points per game in conference play. WyomingCody High’s boys basketball team finished the regular season with a 52-44 victory over Riverton High on Senior Night. The victory gave the Broncs the No. 3 seed in the Riverton Regional. Tournament in Riverton this weekend. Cody will play No. 6 Sheridan at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Cody rallied from a 15-2 first-period deficit, finally taking the lead late in the third quarter, a period in which they held Riverton scoreless. Matt Clark and Adam Waddell led Cody’s comeback, sharing scoring honors with 16 points each and Cody's final 11 points came from the free-throw line. T.J. Baldwin led Riverton with 13 points and Kasey Armajo added 10. |
