Team Scoring & Award

All American Awards for Top 8

Craig Wesner Most Falls in the Least Amount of Time
Just one week before Craig Wesner was to leave for the 1995 Senior National Championships, the Omro (WI) High School wrestler competed in a fund-raising tournament. After a victory, he shook hands with his opponent, raised his arm in triumph, bent down to unstrap his ankle band and collapsed. The coroner would later say that the 18-year-old died immediately of a congenital heart defect – with no blame toward wrestling.

Jeff Reese Most Outstanding Wrestler
The National High School Championships’ Outstanding Wrestler Award is named the Jeff Reese Award in honor of the late wrestler who died at age 20 in 1997 following a workout at the University of Michigan, where he was a scholarship wrestler. A six-year varsity starter at Elmira Southside High School in New York, Jeff was a six-year varsity starter and a three-time state place winner, ascending to the 138-pound title as a senior. He would finish third in the 1995 NHSCA Championships.

Cherie Elvin Memorial Award
This award will be given to the wrestler who is the highest scorer from the state of Kansas. Cherie and her husband Chuck have lead Team Kansas for many years. Cherie lost her life in September 2011 during the tragic events at the Reno Air Show. Her support and effort for Kansas wrestling will not be forgotten.

Adam Frey Memorial Award
Given to a participant who overcame adversity in their life. Adam Frey was a wrestler at Blair Academy and Cornell University. Adam was the 2005 Senior National Champion. He lost his battle with cancer in December of 2009. He leaves behind a legacy in the Adam Frey Foundation, which he set up to give comfort to and provide enjoyment for those receiving treatment for cancer.

Tom Marquis Memorial Award
This award began in 2012 after the loss of a true American Hero, Thomas Joseph Marquis, US Navy SEAL. Tom attended many NHSCA events and was always a star. His personality could light up the room. He was a great friend and ally. He served our country for 25 years as a Navy SEAL on SEAL Team 5 based in Coronado, California. After retiring in 2006, Tom continued to work as a recruiter of the Navy SEALs. He was responsible for the development and oversight of a national recruitment system that increased the quality and quantity of the Navy SEAL candidates. He was truly a hero. This award is given to the Coach or Official that displays selflessness and as a mentor those both in and out of his program.

Jeff Blatnik Sportsmanship Award
The three-time All-American at Springfield College, who wrestled in high school at Niskayuna High School in New York, made the 1980 Olympic Team, but didn’t compete because of the United States boycott of the Games. The most amazing part of Blatnik’s Olympic Gold story is the fact that in 1982 he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma that resulted in his spleen and appendix being removed. During the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Blatnick and teammate Steve Fraser were the first American’s to ever win Gold Medals in Greco-Roman Olympic wrestling history. Blatnick carried the USA flag at the closing ceremonies of the 1984 Games. In 1999, Blatnick, was inducted as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The Jeff Blatnick award is presented to a wrestler that displays outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the mat.

**Awards will be given at the conclusion of the championship finals. You must be present on the awards stand at the finals in order to receive your award. Awards will NOT be shipped**

The highest place finisher from each state will score for their state.
